President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

I saw someone from Saint Bernard last night, pleading for help. How frustrating it is to know that essential personnel are tied up fighting thugs, instead of being more able to help the people in outlying areas.

WWL says people are dying in the parking lot outside the superdome, from heat and dehydration.

Some REMF is insisting that civilian drivers be replaced by military drivers with an escort. There will be a riot when they arrive.

Unless someone tells me differently, you will have to excuse me if I happen to believe what CHertoff said. It is ILLEGAL for the military to operate in a law enforcement function unless so mandated by the Governor.

And I've yet to hear she has mandated.

Don't forget to have a vehicle that is capable of bugging out - the advantage of some 4WD SUV and truck types.

Most SUVs are not offroad capable and therefore are not suitable. If you are single, consider a dual-purpose or offroad motorcycle.

The live shot of the Special Forces Sniper guy desperately running with his gear and rifle through the water on the tracks to try to save his brethren under fire is the most compelling sight I have ever seen - GODSPEED to this brother and success in his mission!!!

All government from NO have now moved to new headquarters in Baton Rouge.

Just great. No on-site leadership to direct the police, FD, etc. Though from what I'm seeing it may be just as well -- give orders to the NG to establish order.

True, but when the normally dry side of a levee is soaked, the integrity of the levee will be compromised. If the river levees are breached we would have an endless supply of water pouring into
New Orleans. Equilibrium would occur when the "bowl" is filled to river-level and starts running OUT...............

I would worry when they dewater the lake water, and the saturated conditions and increasing pressure from the river could cause a rupture of the river levees which are still intact, as far as we know."

Yup.

Ah...So it's the Congress fault...I knew it. Why have they waited so long to reconvene? Why haven't they toured NO?
*sarcasm so noted*

I pray the infants and young were heavily among those rescued.

I don't know the hierarchy of rescue, but the parents with infants and children had better have been given first priority on those buses.

"I suppose this kind of loss of law and order could happen anywhere. But I'm beginning to think that the south is really different from other parts of the country." I live at ground zero for Charley, Frances and Jeanne in central Florida. We are southern and we didn't have this kind of lawlessness or looting. Please refrain from stereotyping. Thanks

And I went thru Betsy and Camille without this BS.

I hope you're right.

But I have also read that the governor has NOT requested miltary help.
If this is true, she should be immediately removed from office for reasons of "incapacity".

This is sheer lunacy.

From what I've read, most of the Walmarts *did* evac their guns. They're getting most of the guns from other stores.
