The near-complete skeleton of a 60,000 year-old adult male Neanderthal found in a cave in Israel contains a bone in the area of the throat whose shape and relation to other bones suggest it provided modern human's extinct relatives with the capability for complex speech. The Neanderthal's horseshoe-shaped hyoid bone has a similar appearance to that of modern humans. It is wider than in non-human primates, like chimpanzees, that cannot make human-like vocalizations. An international team of scientists created a computer model of the Neanderthal hyoid and showed that its positioning would have likely allowed the hominins to speak. Further, hyoid bones of the 500,000 year-old Homo heidelbergensis have also been found but not yet studied. If they turn out to have a similar configuration to the Neanderthal, then human-like speech may have begun as many as 400,000 years earlier than previously thought.

The Neandertal Enigma"Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

They probably sang, too.
They may well have been capable of speech (crows, African grey parrots, and Southern Grackles are all speech capable), but they were not related to us at all. Their DNA is halfway between ours and that of a chimpanzee and there is no reason to believe that any other hominid ever had DNA closer to ours than that.
Looks like an early example of the “Occupy” movement.
There’s a bunch of those guys outside my office building.
Is he white?

A Neanderthal walked into a Cro Magnon bar and asked “who wants to go clubbing with me?” ... and that’s when the trouble began.

Pure BS! Actual recreations have them looking like a mean looking version of us. Give him a haircut and a suit, and he’d take your job. Not only that, but it has already been shown that they interbred with us, leaving the vast majority of us with Neanderthal somewhere in our ancestry.
And for the record, individual Chimpanzees from different troops are far more different from EACH OTHER than we are from Neanderthals.
So says Danny Vendramini, a writer with whose credentials are hard for me to find after a a bit of searching. A bio pages says "Australian born, Danny Vendramini had successful careers as a theater and film director and scriptwriter before turning to evolutionary biology". Find me ANYBODY with serious background in the biological sciences who supports Vendramini's hypothesis, and maybe I'll pay attention.
Reconstructions by people with actual science backgrounds have Neanderthals looking not too different from us. Give one a shave, shower, and modern clothes and you would probably walk pass him on the street without thinking him that unusual.
What is it they say, you can lead a donkey to water.....
How Neanderthal Are You?
In the last few years, scientists have uncovered clues not just to what the lives of Neanderthals may have been like, but also clues that tell us more about what it means to be a modern human.
Most interesting of all is that, although Neanderthals disappeared long ago, their DNA lives on in all non-African people.
Most people have Neanderthal DNA, on average about 2.5 percent, but there are outliers, who have much more.

A neanderthal walked inot a Cro-magnon bar and was asked . What do want Mr. Kerry?
Bigfoot? :-)
I mentioned the discovery of the Hyoid Bone in Neanderthal Fossils in my Book on Vocal training.
The Book (Pop/Rock Broadway Vocal Technique) was copyrighted in 2000.
I am very surprised that the mainstream media is just getting around to reporting this.
Anyway, thanks for the article.
Zero, same as you and everybody else.
Keep saying it, MAYBE one day people will realize the truth.
