Skeleton of young man killed by ancient tsunami found on Turkish coast

The remains of the young man were found at a dig site known as Çeşme-Bağlararası. It sits along a shoreline on Çeşme Bay in western Turkey. The dig site has been yielding Late Bronze Age artifacts for several years but it was only recently that the digging uncovered evidence of a tsunami—layers of ash and debris that were prevented from being washed back into the sea by a retaining wall. In addition to the remains of the young man, the researchers also found the remains of a dog. The evidence also showed that the area had been struck by several tsunamis related to the Thera eruption. Radiocarbon dating of materials surrounding the remains showed them to be from a time no earlier than 1612 BC. The researchers also found damaged walls, rubble, sediment and ash, all evidence of multiple tsunamis. They also found evidence of what they describe as misshapen pits—likely created by people looking for victims shortly after the tsunamis struck. The remains of the young man were found pushed up against a retaining wall, positioned in a way familiar to those who have worked on tsunami search efforts in modern times.

Headline is not plausible. Skeletons are already dead and can’t be killed.

Well, the skeleton was mindin’ itself all alone like on the beach while focusing on bleaching in the sun when this positively ancient tsunami shows up to mug ‘im like.
He resists and hey bwammo, he gets obliterated so badly even a we doggo skeleton gets elbow dropped.
Witnesses of course did nothing, they wandered off.
But there’s still an ancient tsunami out there mugging skeletons on beaches!

/ Kidding. Worse if you imagine the above in an Aussie accent.

In the Aegean Sea, off the coast of Turkey near Izmir.

Probably caught every tsunami ever thrust in the Mediterranean Sea.

He might have died in the tidal wave generated by the eruption of the Santorini super-volcano, which happened around 1620 BC.

What Really Happened in the Thera Super Eruption

Same story written slightly differently.

Among other things, it was unclear exactly when the volcano erupted. So far, experts have assumed the 16th or 17th century BC. Earlier studies focused primarily on deposits of pumice stone, ash and loose lava fragments, write the researchers from Turkey, Israel and Austria.

In contrast, they draw their conclusions mainly from the tsunami deposits in the city of Cesme-Baglararasi. The then regional center is located west of Izmir on a headland on the Turkish west coast about 230 kilometers from the volcano. In the deposits, the team found the first documented alleged victims of the flood disaster – two skeletons, of a young man and a dog.

After analyzing layers of the earth containing residues from marine life such as lagoon cockles (Cerastoderma glaucum) and limpets (patella), the team assumes that the site was hit by several tsunami waves at the time. The researchers also conclude from the one-sided alignment of the rubble that the destruction came from tsunamis and not from earthquakes.

For example, parts of the fortress wall and adjacent houses were washed inland. Isolated deep pits within the tsunami layers therefore testify that people were looking for survivors and dead in the rubble. “The human skeleton was about three feet below such a pit, suggesting that it was too deep to be found and was therefore (probably unknowingly) left behind.”

Lots of conjecture in the writing, but they tell a good story from the rubble left behind.

Modern special effects companies have gazillion terabyte computers that can do anything. But for me the high point of special effects bad assery is Ray Harryhausen’s skeleton warriors in Jason and the Argonauts.
