Did you know that any Free Republic topic can be a sidebar for you? Did you know you can remove any sidebar that you currently have? Did you know you can control how many posts show up in each sidebar, and what order the sidebars show up on your latest posts page?
I have compiled this thread to help make the task of managing your sidebars easier.
The following table shows all the Free Republic topics that are currently configured. For any of them, you can click to topic name to see what the actual topic is, in case the one-word name doesn't make that obvious. For each topic I have included a link that will either add the topic as a sidebar or remove it as a sidebar for your account.
Once you have the sidebars you want chosen, then you can set how many posts for each and what order the sidebars are displayed. The My Subscriptions link brings up a page where you can change these options. For any sidebar, the value you put in the MAX column is the maximum number of articles which will show up in the sidebar. The ORDER column is used to designate the order you want them to appear. The sidebar that has the lowest number will be displayed first-- so the easiest way to set this up is to just go and put a 1 in the ORDER field for the sidebar you want to go on top, then a 2 in the one you want second, and so on. If you give the same ORDER number for two or more sidebars, then whichever one has been most recently posted to will come first.
A little known about feature is the Review page, which can be quite handy after you have set up all your sidebars. Try it out after you have done all the rest.

Bookmarked.
I selected my sidebars back when we changed over to the new FR last year and could never figure how to modify them after that.
Thanks.

I, too, would love to make the bang list a sidebar.
To: Cinnamon Girl
I'd be glad to help by explaining it better, but to do so I would need to understand better what it is that you do not get?

lol
I am sure with a bigger monitor you can make your pages bigger so you can see more per page without scrolling.

Thanks.
Nice work!

I don't get how you make it work.

It is way past time for an official FR FAQ file to be developed and a link to it posted in the upper LH corner along with "Topics", "Search", etc.I would volunteer for that project.
Evening hours at least.

How you make what work?
When you load this page, over on the right hand side you should see some sidebars. Most people have Breaking News, FrontPage, Extended, Editorial, FR, and Announcements.
The table above shows all the different topics you could have as a sidebar. If you click the link in the first column, you get a page that shows you what is currently in that topic. If you click the link in the second column, it adds that topic as a sidebar for you. And if you click the third column, if you had it as a sidebar it removes it.
If there is anything that you don't understand, I will be glad to explain better, but you will have to tell me more about what is confusing you than just "I don't get it". Get what? Or more than "I don't get how to make it work." What work? What is it you are trying to do that you can't get to work? Thanks, AM

"Nice work. Bookmarked for my future use."Pardon my ignorance, but how does one bookmark a thread such as this? There used to be a "bookmark" in the options but I can't see one now. Many thanks in advance....

I see the others answered you. When I bookmark, I just do it in my own browser. I have a very large bookmark section for FR!

Yes, because that is the default number until you change it. See above for the link to "My Subscriptions", the link that you use to change these numbers.

I have suscribed to everything, but have no sidebars displayed at all. I want to have Breaking News displayed as a sidebar and don't know how to make that happen.
To: secretagent
Jim fixed your settings, it should work now. Your "Subscriptions Bar" option was turned off in your preferences.

You can access your settings by clicking on your name at the upper right hand corner.

Thanks! I feel dumb that I didn't see that before.
Works now - I have a sidebar!

Thanks to I Am Not A Mod for this great topic. This isn't GGG related per se, but will probably be of interest to anyone on FR. BTTT! Please FREEPMAIL me if you want on, off, or alter the "Gods, Graves, Glyphs" PING list --

Thanks for the ping. Interesting that the hysterical reporters from earlier in the week can't bother to appear today, isn't it?
I don't foresee them questioning Saddam Hussein with the same contempt they are using toward this Major.
