U.S. News & World Report ^ | March 9, 2010 | Paul Bedard

Posted on Tuesday, March 09, 2010 11:20:05 PM by 2ndDivisionVet

President Obama isn't the only one stepping up efforts on the healthcare front. As the president passionately pushes for passage of his plan in campaign-style stops in Pennsylvania and Missouri, tea party protesters are planning to swamp Washington to block movement on what they consider a huge expansion of the federal bureaucracy.

Is Health Care a Right?

Most politicians, and probably most Americans, see health care as a right. Thus, whether a person has the means to pay for medical services or not, he is nonetheless entitled to them. Let's ask ourselves a few questions about this vision.

There seems to be growing optimism among some Republicans that if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi finagles the votes to pass Obamacare, the GOP triumphantly will sweep into power and immediately repeal it.

You can lead healthcare providers to reforms, but you can't make them think

Townhall ^ | March 9, 2010 | John David Powell

All of the politics, posturing, and punditry in Washington surrounding sweeping healthcare reform fail to consider one sad, yet important, fact: you can’t legislate common sense and customer service. Give away health care, hand out free prescription medication, provide total access to every living human being on the planet, and you’ll still have people and processes that fail to do the jobs for which they’re paid or for which they’re designed.

There’s no trendline in the AP’s story so let’s see if we can make our own. Two weeks ago, Gallup found a 39/52 split opposed to reconciliation; on the same day, Fox News found just 34 percent wanted Obama to pass the bill without GOP support versus 59 percent who thought he should start over if no compromise was possible. Since then, The One’s mumbled about the Olympic spirit, declared — for maybe the fifth time since last year — that the time for talk was over, and hit the road to demand an “up or down” vote on a bill that the public hates because he owes that to the public.

Obama promised $2,500 health care savings; CBO says plan is $2,300 price increase

From a fact sheet on Obama's campaign website (PDF link):

Obama’s plan will save a typical family up to $2,500 on premiums by bringing the health care system into the 21st century: cutting waste, improving technology, expanding coverage to all Americans, and paying for some high-cost cases.

The White House and Democratic leaders are considering wrapping a student loan reform bill into the reconciliation "fix it" bill the Senate plans to pass for health care reform. At least nine senators, however, now oppose the plan, complicating Democrats' plans to finish health care reform as quickly as possible.

In his recent “pep talks” about Obamacare, the President has frequently mentioned the Congressional Budget Office’s findings to support his arguments. As I have read those findings, as well as those of the Office of the Actuary for Medicare and Medicaid (OACT) I am perplexed by the President’s comments. We are told that Obamacare will reduce everyone’s premiums. Here is what the CBO actually said:

Can the States Nullify Health Care Reform?

Timothy S. Jost, J.D.

March 11, 2010

Whereas states generally adopt laws to achieve a legal effect, nullification laws are pure political theater. On its face, the Virginia bill exempts residents of the Commonwealth from having to comply with a law requiring the purchase of health insurance. Although the bill is phrased in the passive voice, its intent is clearly to block the implementation of a federal mandate requiring all individuals to carry health insurance. But achieving this aim is constitutionally impossible.

The National Republican Congressional Committee has published a target list on health care. In addition to continuing to contact the five Tennessee Democrat Congressmen, you can go http://www.votervoice.net/link/clickthrough/ext/94697.aspx to contact some of these targets. Nancy Pelosi does not have the 216 votes necessary to pass the Senate health care bill. She’s planning to go ahead without the votes of the Stupak 12. Today the Senate parliamentarian ruled the Senate bill must become law before “fixes” can be made via the parliamentary tactic known as reconciliation. The GOP Senate caucus will rigorously enforce the Byrd rule, limiting the reconciliation changes to budget matters and nothing more.
What’s going on? The final push for Obamacare is about to begin. It starts on Monday, when the House Budget Committee will insert reconciliation instructions into the November House health care bill. By late Monday / early Tuesday, Budget will pass this bill and send it to the House Rules Committee, where Pelosi will change the language so that it matches the Senate bill. This is the final compromise legislation that may come to a vote on the House floor within weeks. “They’re creating the shell,” says Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.
