At the request of members, I am restarting those "Tales from the Dark UnderBelly Of the Beast"-- the stories and issues that the press and media either ignore, won't even talk about, or will mention once and forevermore claim "it's old news..."

Naturally, some will be stories which interest me, or things I think we all need to be aware of.

I am experimenting with a minor change in presentation- when I can, I will cut to

-GoogleNewsBeta--

with a keyword or two and see what kind of links to "mainstream" stories I can find in contrast to what we see here and on other sites.

May I remind you of a couple of points to bear in mind?
Each link usually has many other links within- follow them all to get "the rest of the story."
Don't forget the "open multiple browsers" trick with control-n -- this allows you to hold your place with one, and use the others to follow links, run searches, etc.

Rather than go back and rehash old links, I'll give you links to the original posts here:

ok, one more pass and I'm putting this one to bed.

READ THIS, FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE

Look, there's a wide variety of people here with a lot of shared history and a wide variety of expertise and experience. Almost all of them adults. Many of us are prior service. Mostly conservative, mostly rational, mostly religious (of many varieties, we're a regular Church of the Holy Sepulchre, what with the way we regularly pummel each other).
Mostly Harmless (shh, be vewwy qwuiet, I'm hunting newbies).
Most of all we've got an extensive sense of humor and little patience for stupidity or lying frauds.
Most of us have blogged together for 5-6 years. There's a collective zeitgeist here that's kept us together through many things. Don't come in here and get in the middle of our knife fights, you'll be sorry.
Don't be an asshat. Especially a Liberal asshat.
Solicit a crime, you're on your own. Commit a crime, you're gone.
Blanket expressions of bigotry against any race, ethnicity, religion, you're gone.
Profanity? WTF? Seriously? Oh. Don't frighten the ladies, they might shoot you.
Pr0n? Broadcast TV standards. And I don't mean 'bored overnight tech accidentally switches cable feeds', either.
Known trolls, prior pugnacious prods, and Talking Points (sock-)Puppets will be Shot On Site [sic]. And then out of a cannon. Or maybe a catapult, we have a penchant for Monty Python here. We're whimsical. Capricious even.
There's no third chances here, and no didactic rules to play barracks-lawyer with. Piss more than a few of us off, you're gone.
And above all, we remain the people that fact-check your ass.

Beyond Here There Be Dragons

eta And Landmines. Almost forgot the Landmines.

I think the rough humor is essential as a filter and warning. But that could just be me. But I really would rather avoid an influx of humorless pedants, or the easily or falsely aggrieved.

Going to let this one rest a little bit again, then it goes up.

"Barack? We need to talk...."

In an article published last Saturday in the WSJ.com, Paul Starobin suggests that America, as a direct reaction to an ever-growing and more powerful central government, may edge towards being "an assembly of largely autonomous regional republics." Starobin sees the unmistakable growth of secessionist sentiment in Texas, Alaska and elsewhere, and notes:

... history seems to be driving one nail after another into the coffin of the big, which is why the Obama planners and their ilk, even if they now ride high, may be doomed to fail. No one anymore expects the best ideas to come from the biggest actors in the economy, so should anyone expect the best thinking to be done by the whales of the political world?

American Thinker's George Joyce, in a review of Starobin's piece, writes "A failed presidency for Barack Obama could turn into liberalism's worst nightmare. Barely six months into his term, the 44th president has succeeded in generating the most widespread and serious discussion of secession since the Civil War. Despite what Newsweek's Evan Thomas may claim, Obama is not the 'God' who will bring us together but the autocratic sponsor of an overbearing, oppressive leviathan from which a growing number of Americans are seeking refuge.

Wouldn't a new American devolution...be a liberal's worst nightmare? Beyond the psychosis most liberals would have to endure at the thought of losing any kind of control, the prospect of vibrant, happy, and successful conservative republics in places like Texas, South Carolina or Utah would be an inescapable spotlight forever exposing the failure of liberal ideology...

In light of America's consistent historic reaction to any attempt to impose control from a distance, some form of major push-back against Obama's preening emperor-act seems almost inevitable. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Both pieces are well worth reading.

The Obamacare horror story you won’t hear

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 19, 2009 01:04 AM

I blogged about Michelle Obama’s role in creating a patient-dumping scheme for the University of Chicago Medical Center back in March. With her husband and the Democrats unleashing health care horror story anecdotes to gin up public fear and build support for the beleaguered Obamacare plan, my syndicated column today revisits the kind of “reform” the Obamas and their Chicago cronies champion — and who benefits.

Here’s a challenge to the ABC News Obamacare infomercial producers. I dare you to ask President Obama this question: What have you done for Dontae Adams, lately?

The White House, Democrats, and MoveOn liberals are spreading health care sob stories to sell a government takeover. But there’s one health care policy nightmare you won’t hear the Obamas hyping. It’s a tale of poor, minority patient-dumping in Chicago — with First Lady Michelle Obama’s fingerprints all over it.

Both Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa and Democrat Rep. Bobby Rush of Chicago have raised red flags about the outsourcing program, run by the University of Chicago Medical Center. The hospital has non-profit status and receives lucrative tax breaks in exchange for providing charity care. Yet, it spent a measly $10 million on charity care for the poor in fiscal 2007 when Mrs. Obama was employed there—1.3 percent of its total hospital expenses, according to an analysis performed for The Washington Post by the non-partisan Center for Tax and Budget Accountability. The figure is below the 2.1 percent average for nonprofit hospitals in surrounding Cook County.

Rep. Rush called for a House investigation last week in response to months of patient-dumping complaints, noting: “Congress has a duty to expend its power to mitigate and prevent this despicable practice from continuing in centers that receive federal funds.”

Don’t expect the president to support a probe. While a top executive at the hospital, Mrs. Obama helped engineer the plan to offload low-income patients with non-urgent health needs. Under the Orwellian banner of an “Urban Health Initiative,” Mrs. Obama sold the scheme to outsource low-income care to other facilities as a way to “dramatically improve health care for thousands of South Side residents.” The program guaranteed “free” shuttle rides to and from the outside clinics.

In truth, it was old-fashioned cost-cutting and favor-trading repackaged as minority aid. Clearing out the poor freed up room for insured (i.e., more lucrative) patients. If a Republican had proposed the very same program and recruited black civic leaders to front it, Michelle Obama and her grievance-mongering friends would be screaming “RAAAAAAAAACISM!” at the top of their lungs.

Joe Stephens of the Washington Post wrote: “To ensure community support, Michelle Obama and others in late 2006 recommended that the hospital hire the firm of David Axelrod, who a few months later became the chief strategist for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. Axelrod’s firm recommended an aggressive promotional effort modeled on a political campaign—appoint a campaign manager, conduct focus groups, target messages to specific constituencies, then recruit religious leaders and other third-party ‘validators.’ They, in turn, would write and submit opinion pieces to Chicago publications.”

Some health care experts saw through Mrs. Obama and her public relations man, David Axelrod—yes, the same David Axelrod who is now Mr. Obama’s senior adviser at the White House. The University of Chicago Medical Center hired Axelrod’s public relations firm, ASK Public Strategies, to promote Mrs. Obama’s Urban Health Initiative. Axelrod had the blessing of Chicago political guru Valerie Jarrett – now White House senior adviser.

Axelrod’s great contribution: Re-branding! His firm recommended re-naming the initiative after “[i]nternal and external respondents expressed the opinion that the word ‘urban’ is code for ‘black’ or ‘black and poor’….Based on the research, consideration should be given to re-branding the initiative.” Axelrod and the Obama campaign refused to disclose how much his firm received for its genius re-branding services.

In February 2009, outrage in the Obamas’ community exploded after a young boy covered by Medicaid was turned away from the University of Chicago Medical Center. Dontae Adams’ mother, Angela, had sought emergency treatment for him after a pit bull tore off his upper lip. Mrs. Obama’s hospital gave the boy a tetanus shot, antibiotics, and Tylenol and shoved him out the door. The mother and son took an hour-long bus ride to another hospital for surgery.

I’ll guarantee you this: You’ll never see the Adams family featured at an Obama policy summit or seated next to the First Lady at a joint session of Congress to illustrate the failures of the health care system.

Following the Adams incident, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) blasted Mrs. Obama and Mr. Axelrod’s grand plan. The group released a statement expressing “grave concerns that the University of Chicago’s policy toward emergency patients is dangerously close to ‘patient dumping,’ a practice made illegal by the Emergency Medical Labor and Treatment Act (EMTALA)” – signed by President Reagan, by the way – “and reflected an effort to ‘cherry pick’ wealthy patients over poor.”

Rewarding political cronies at the expense of the poor while posing as guardians of the downtrodden? Welcome to Obamacare.

Coldest Weather in 100 Years to Strike by 2012

Mark Steyn weighs in on Professor Martin's 'robust' performance with
Canada's Holy Inquisition
[See updates below]

Speaking to the House of Commons committee hearings on Canada's "human rights" commissions, Professor Martin of the University of Western Ontario gave a remarkable presentation on what he calls their "horrifying record". You can listen to the audio here - it's apparently too strong meat to let the citizenry see the video. You won't want to miss it.

Among its other notable features, it marks the latest stage in the denormalization of Richard Warman, former Canadian "Human Rights" Commission employee, victorious plaintiff on every Section 13 prosecution since 2002 and the country's most prominent Internet Nazi. Professor Martin calls him "the utterly odious Richard Warman" - and even brings up the Anne Cools post, as Senator Cools happens to be a friend of the professor.

Section 13, the CHRC and its Chief Commissar shame Canada, and they will not endure. In his previous incarnation as BBC late-night host twittering with leftie novelists into the small hours about freedom of expression, Michael Ignatieff would have been the first to say so. I'm confident his old pals Rushdie, Hitchens and Amis will eventually remind him of what he knows to be true.

[UPDATE: I like this line in response to a Liberal questioner: "Life in a democracy requires robust citizens." The Grit questions are as one might expect: tendentious, emotive, and boasting of their PC bona fides.]

[UPDATE 2: Gotta love this question from Mr Hiebert: "In the example of Senator Cools, I have to ask: Do you believe that she should have access to some form of legislation or prosecutorial avenue to prevent people like Mr Warman from making the comments that he did about her on the Internet?"

And there it is, folks: In Hansard, in the official Parliamentary record, for all eternity.

Professor Martin's response: "She does not want to soil herself by getting into a tussle with vermin like this [Mr Warman]." On the other hand, he is in favour of "a public hanging of Richard Warman".]

[UPDATE 3: The committee chairman: "I assume it's a reference to her race that begins with the letter 'n'." Mr Warman came this close to getting it read into the record.]

[IN SUMMARY: I yield to no one in my contempt for Richard Warman, and I'm all for getting his activities into Hansard, but I think the Professor's friendship with Senator Cools led him slightly off-track at times. It was a good presentation on overall philosophy and the law and in response to Liberal questions, but he got muddled up on some of the specifics of the HRC cases. Very good on the "odious" Taylor - the first Canadian to be imprisoned for his opinions since the 1930s.]

Thanks Barack... Record Unemployment in 12 States

Guess not.

12 states are now experiencing record unemployment numbers.

Note: the BLS started keeping state records in 1976, so obviously this doesn't include the Depression.

From the BLS: Regional and State Employment and Unemployment Summary

Michigan again reported the highest jobless rate, 14.1 percent in May. The states with the next highest rates were Oregon, 12.4 percent; Rhode Island and South Carolina, 12.1 percent each; California, 11.5 percent; Nevada, 11.3 percent; and North Carolina, 11.1 percent. Six additional states and the District of Columbia recorded unemployment rates of at least 10.0 percent. The California, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, and South Carolina rates were the highest on record for those states. Florida, at 10.2 percent, and Georgia, at 9.7 percent, also posted series highs. Nebraska and North Dakota registered the lowest unemployment rates, 4.4 percent each.
Barack Obama admitted this week that the US unemployment rate will reach 10% this year.

Somewhere I determined that those terms plus hard work were my ticket to the American dream. Along the way I realized that socialism/communism has never done much but impoverish all who were foolish enough to participate. Cynthia Cooper, Coleen Rowley and Sherron Watkins
"They took huge professional and personal risks to blow the whistle on what went wrong at WorldCom, Enron and the FBI—and in so doing helped remind us what American courage and American values are all about."
Uh-huh.

But, that was back during the Bush years, when the media thought whistleblowers were cool.

Last week, the Obama White House fired inspector general Gerald Walpin after he identified millions of dollars in AmeriCorps funds that were wasted or misspent. The man in charge of Americorps is a top Obama supporter and friend. Mayor Kevin Johnson used AmeriCorps grants to pay volunteers to engage in school-board political activities, run personal errands for Johnson and even wash his car.

This week the Obama White House smeared Walpin claiming he was "confused" at a meeting and therefore had to be fired. The White House has fired two inspector generals in the last two weeks.

But, don't expect TIME Magazine to recognize Walpin for taking "huge professional and personal risks to blow the whistle on what went wrong" at Americorps.

Things don't work that way in the Age of Obama.

Byron York writes at The Washington Examiner today on how the GOP can crack the Americorps scandal.

Radical Islam Reaches Bolivia-- Ahmadinejad Loincloths a Hit? (Updated)

Ahmadinejad supporters in Bolivia--

Iran Press News
UPDATE: Iran Press News was punked. The photo is from Picjoke

In 2007, Former Bolivian Congressman and Ambassador Jose' Brechner disclosed that radical Islamists from from Iran, Libya and other Middle Eastern nations had infiltrated Bolivia.
This week report by the Open Source Center (OSC) of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence says it's true.
FOX News reported:

A poor, agrarian, landlocked country in South America with a nearly 100 percent Christian population is hardly the place one would expect to become a hotbed of Islamic extremism in the Western Hemisphere.

But a recent report by the Open Source Center (OSC) of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence says it's so.

There are only 1,000 Muslims in Bolivia, a country of 9.7 million people, but the connection between some of the community’s religious leaders and Iran — as well as with fundamentalist factions in the Palestinian territories — has U.S. officials and terror experts keeping a watchful eye on them.

The report revealed a number of Muslim organizations in Bolivia whose leaders have publicly denounced U.S. foreign policy and have direct associations with extremists in the Middle East.

“There’s a theory that they may believe — Latin America, particularly with its Leftist leanings in recent years, may be more receptive to the anti-American-type rhetoric that we’ve been accustomed to hearing from Iran,” said a U.S. intelligence official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The Marxist Morales has been cozying up with the Iranians for years. Here he gets touchy-feely with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Global cooling

More and more, progressives who want American citizens to fork over their money in an effort to control the climate are trying to market the phrase "climate change" instead of "global warming," in an urgent about face they hope nobody will notice. That's because they're faced with an inconvenient truth: all the hystrionics about icebergs melting and drowning coastal cities in coming years may not be true. To continue the fear, and therefore generate support for spending billions to solve the crisis, fear-mongers need terminology that will work no matter what the climate does.

~ WATCHING IRAN: Teh Binks’ take? The canned pre-arranged election went tea-party on the mullahs. Even if that’s not the case, the plebs are getting uppity over there, and the bosses don’t like it.

Here in Canada, we have petty would-be tyrants bossing people around for their own good. In Iran, they’ve had 30 years of the fully-monty misery, and it looks like the regime is in trouble.

Dictatorships love faux-elections, with the inevitable 99.5% turnout, and all that. As far as I can tell, this was supposed to be yet another one in Czar Mullah-run style, but the kids are getting uppity (gee, sounds like 1979, except those kids are now the tyrant geezers in charge), can Twitter, e-mail, YouTube, and have sent a clear message to the elites and the world that Persian folks are tired of theocracy and canned elections, worried about nuclear war, and don’t particularly care for their rulers.

The other guy in the election doesn’t matter, in one sense– freedom-loving university students, women’s rights activists and others have been disappearing or rotting in jail or turning up dead for years– even if we didn’t pay much attention to them. Shame on us.

An Ancient People

Why do I say ‘Persian’? Because before Islam steamrolled her ancient (and indeed, partly Christianized) culture, this is one of the old great nations of the ancient world, feared by all, then conquered by Alexander, then risen again under new kings. The mighty monuments of old Persia still stand– though the mullahs were mulling bulldozing the lot, since for Islam, anything ‘before’ is essentially ‘the time of evil’.

When I see skin-colour, I ask ‘Who are they– what do they think?’ and not ‘all Arabs/ Persians/ Muslims are retards. I remember a refugee of the ‘79 Revolution who came to university in Canada, and told us of what he was escaping– he spoke 4 or 5 languages, was funny, well-read, politically serious, and a good guy– and he taught me and my immature teen friends some naughty Iranian curses. Plus he loved D&D.

Sure the former Shah of Iran sucked in certain ways– like the Russian Tsar, or the French King: and the horrible slaughter and many-times worse revolutions that overthrew them were so very much worse. Revolutions eat their children, and then their grandchildren: the reform becomes the revolt becomes the new tyrants. The Tsar’s feeble internal security and a few hundred in detention becomes the KGB, and 25 millions in the Gulags.

Looking Elsewhere

Iraq sits next door, having a much freer system, and actual elections that mean something– the grass is greener over the fence.

Despite the usual patterns of politics and diplomacy, this is one of those quirky moments when a whole people are galvanized by an idea of freedom. And the Persian people will remember this time, whether better days come sooner or later for them: that American, Canada, and the world stood for them, and let their voices be heard, when their own masters would not listen, or only respond with violence and death.

Remembering

They will remember these days: that we watched, spoke out, stood with them– (don’t do that Iran internet-blocking thing: it mostly hurts the good guys)? This may be one of those moments that changes the life of a people and the world, without the big names and important occasions– and even aside from the bumbling utopian intentions of the Greatest POTUS Ever.

Militant head-cracking Shari’a Islamic Theocracy is not the best that the world has to offer. God loves his people, and would have them set free, to live to the full, and worship, and bring forward all the best of who they are and could and should be. ~

~ JUST GOTTA SAY IT– I Love the TV-show NCIS, just finished season 6, with a sweet cliffhanger. It is a profoundly conservative, politically incorrect show from that conservative and politically incorrect producer & screenwriter Donald P. Bellisario, mastermind of “Magnum, P.I., Airwolf, Quantum Leap, JAG, and NCIS. Less-known creations include Tales of the Gold Monkey, Tequila & Bonetti and First Monday. He was also writer/producer on Black Sheep Squadron and the original Battlestar Galactica“.

It’s all about the actors and the writing: almost never a false note, and the writing is crisp– almost sparse– and sparkles with intelligence, seriousness, and humour. It’s a very human show.

The show deals in good/ evil, topical issues, the life & death costs of the current Jihad, and so much more. Plus, we get to see the CIA, FBI, and Mossad in action, with more than a whiff of Tom Clancy. Bellisario is neither peacenik or warmonger– nor a antihero worshipper– but rather a teller of stories of our time. If you’ve not seen it, the DVD season are on Amazon, and re-runs through the Summer on North American TV.

NCIS– part of what makes the Binks who he is. Obey, enjoy. ~

Harry Abrams - Spying on Free Dominion since 2007
I was reading about the CHRC case against Arthur Topham and the Radical Press that was initiated by one Harry Abrams from the B'nai Brith. As part of the evidence submitted, Harry Abrams admitted to using a fake internet identity (SURPRISE!) named "Brian Esker" when he was corresponding with Arthur Topham and trying to build the case against him. Here is a link to those revelations: http://www.radicalpress.com/?p=786

Well, some time ago, I had a conversation with Harry Abrams on the Western Standard blog. I had never met Harry Abrams or had any contact with him, but it was obvious that he knew me.

Here is a link to that conversation, and here are a couple of his posts to me:

Quote:
From my chair it looks like Connie's misapprehensions and re-parroting of other peoples' misapprehensions/expressed distortions have already cost her plenty.

And I see no reason for that not to continue based upon her above posted remarks and the stuff she continues to allow/encourage to be posted on her own blog.

But Connie, you've heard this many times before. And disregarded it many times. That's why you're where you are.

If I was you, I would attempt to make amends with Mr. Warman. But I'm not. So this now has to play out, and the piper still must be paid at the end of the party.

Anyway, I commented before that I thought those posts sounded like they were written by some kind of evil James Bond villain, but I didn't think too much of it at the time, other than that it creeped me out.

But, after I read Arthur Topham's report, I decided to check the FD member list to see if there was any sign of Harry's alter-ego, Brian Esker.

Guess what???

Not only did the creepy little man sign up at Free Dominion here, but his sign-up date shows that he did so just THREE DAYS after the story of the Gentes CHRC complaint against Free Dominion was posted on this site.

Now, at that time, I had never even heard the names "Harry Abrams" or "Richard Warman", the CHRC complaint was not of an anti-Semitic nature, and Free Dominion was (as it is today) the most pro-Israel forum in Canadian cyberspace.

So, why would B'nai Brith agent, Harry Abrams/Brian Esker have been lurking around Free Dominion like a hideous vulture the moment the CHRC attacked us?

And, since he didn't post anything under that username, has he been using other usernames to post here since then? (Something like "Lil's Husband", maybe??)

So many questions, aren't there?

But, all of this points to something very organized and very sinister, and we WILL get to the bottom of it. I promise.

Michelle Obama Deep In The Americrooks Mess

Does anyone really believe Michelle Obama did not have a huge hand in the firing of Inspector General Walpin last week, especially seeing as how large a role she plays in the organizations involved? Michelle Malkin:

Guess where the First Lady will be on Monday?

Why, she’ll be delivering the keynote address at the 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service in San Francisco.

And who is co-sponsoring the conference?

Why, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS)!

Yes, that’s the same CNCS that is the parent organization of AmeriCorps.

It’s the same CNCS that last year suspended Sacramento mayor/Obama crony Kevin Johnson from receiving federal funds after then-inspector general Gerald Walpin blew the whistle on massive fraud and abuse of AmeriCorps dollars for personal and political gain.

It’s the same CNCS that then sat by and meekly watched Team Obama and the U.S. Attorney in Sacramento railroad Walpin after the November 2008 election for doing his damned job.

And now, there is no honest, independent watchdog to raise questions on behalf of taxpayers as the Obama political machine takes over the national service juggernaut. How…convenient.

And we're not only talking about a few speeches to the organizations, we're talking about the First Lady being waaaay to involved in them:

AmeriCrooks Watch: Meddling Michelle Obama to keynote volunteerism conference

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 20, 2009 10:47 AM

Well, well, well.

Michelle, Michelle, Michelle.

By the way: The First Lady’s former chief of staff, Jackie Norris, starts her new job as “senior adviser” (translation: Michelle O’s mole) at CNCS on Monday. And from the AmeriCorps press release published yesterday:

“The First Lady has made service and volunteering a life calling, and her leadership is helping to inspire a whole new generation of Americans who are making service a part of their daily lives,” said Nicola Goren, Acting CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “Her participation demonstrates the high priority the White House has placed on service as a way to help in our nation’s recovery.”

“First Lady Michelle Obama knows first-hand the power of service to transform lives and communities,” said Michelle Nunn, CEO of the Points of Light Institute and co-founder of HandsOn Network. “We are thrilled that she chose our national conference as the platform to launch United We Serve. She has made service a centerpiece of her agenda, and her appearance will add a burst of excitement and a new significance to this gathering of service leaders as well as our larger efforts to usher in a new era of service.”

I first raised questions about the First Lady’s meddling into the AmeriCrooks mess on June 12 after following up on little-noticed reports in the niche publication Youth Today detailing Mrs. Obama’s active role and interest in staffing the top management at CNCS. As I noted last week:

Mrs. Obama’s interest is more than passing. She ran the AmeriCorps-funded non-profit Public Allies in Chicago from 1993-1996 and served on its national board until 2001. Like so many of the AmeriCorps recipients investigated by the inspector general’s office over the years, Public Allies was found to have violated basic eligibility and compliance rules. A January 2007 audit reported that the group lacked internal controls verifying that recipients who received education grants and living allowances were legal citizens or permanent residents as required by law.

Michelle Obama’s installation as the face and voice of the government volunteerism boondoggle only deepens suspicions about the role she and her staff may have played in Walpin’s sacking. So does her past exploitation of the “community service” mantle to reward Chicago politicos (see “The Obama horror story you won’t hear”).

***

You know who else was supposed to speak at the CNCS conference next week?

The supposedly dazed and confused Gerald Walpin.

Via WashTimes (hat tip - Quin Hilyer):

On Tuesday June 9, just one day before the White House first asked him to step down, the agency asked him to make a speech on June 23 in San Francisco to a conference of some 2,000 staff members and grantees. The invitation, he said, was delivered by Gretchen Van De Veer, director of the Office of Leadership Development and Training at the Corporation for National and Community Service.

“They begged me to come,” he said. “Why would they do that if they thought I am incapacitated?”

Michelle? Anyone?

***

Will the liberal media lapdogs in San Francisco ask tough questions — or will they genuflect a la the Washington Post’s Robin Givan, who gushed last week that “so many eye her with awe and disbelief.”

Will anyone press the First Lady on the financial scandal — or will we get more drool-covered coverage of her bare arms?

Well, here’s the San Francisco Chronicle’s Carla Marinucci previewing the “frenzy” over Michelle Obama’s upcoming visit:

First Lady Michelle Obama is kicking off a White House push to underscore the importance of volunteerism in San Francisco on Monday — a move that will have political figures here elbowing each other to get in the frame with her.

But step aside, folks, it’s California First Lady Maria Shriver who snags that honor before all. Volunteerism has long been her leading issue, and she’s going to be alongside First Lady Michelle for the day in the starring role.

…”During this summer, the president is renewing his call to all Americans to identify needs in their communities, engage in meaningful service to create change — and stay engaged with these projects long after September,” says the Obama Administration press release, which urges Americans to hit the website of the Corporation for National and Community Service for ideas on where to volunteer.

But having Michelle Obama on board in San Francisco to make the case is a coup, bigtime, for Shriver and California; it not only ensures that armies of TV cameras will be focusing on state and local efforts, but brings out an adoring public — and that horde of local elected officials to lend support (and get in the picture).

Despite the MSM protectionism, this scandal is not going away.

I have a terrific volunteerism project: Volunteer to do the job the obsequious professional journalists won’t do. There will be national service events involving Team Obama members on Monday all over the country. Volunteer to serve your country by showing up and asking why Dear Leader undermined the IG protection law he helped co-sponsor in cutting Walpin loose.

Here’s the list of scheduled events open to the press and public unless otherwise noted:

MICHELLE OBAMA ON "COURT ORDERED INACTIVE STATUS"

Obama Presidential Eligibility - An Introductory Primer

Obama To Iran: Hey Guys, Can't I Just Finish My Ice Cream?

—DrewM.

Being President is hard, but not so hard that you can't pop out with the kids for some ice cream! (scroll around)

Obama and the girls are back at the WH after their quick outing for frozen custard.

...The Obama outing last 54 minutes. The Secret Service used the SUV instead of the limo for the pres and daughters.

...You're gonna laff: Obama & the girls actually bought Frozen Puppy pops for Bo: flavors: pumpkin, peanut butter and yogurt…

Yeah, I'm LOLing my ass off.

Mark Knoller, the CBS reporter who broke this story is shocked people are expressing outrage over this.

As someone once said, words matter. Well so do images. The image of the President of the United State heading out for a fun afternoon with the kids while people are still dying in the streets and being rounded up the security services is simply too much.

I get Presidents have to have lives. I didn't expect Bush to maintain a 24/7 vigil in the White House for 7 years after 9/11 but I wouldn't have expected him to head out for a "Puppy Pops" while there was a major offensive under way either.

There's precious little Obama can do, I don't think it's too much ask he not do crap to make it look like he's even less interested than he already seems. Whether he knows it or not, the world isn't only watching Tehran.

I'm sure lefties will wine that I and others who are annoyed by this will tell me how mean I am for not letting Obama be a dad and how the girls shouldn't be punished for the job he took.

Here's the thing, I don't begrudge the kids a vacation and shopping spree in Paris or any of the other perquisites they get from being the President's daughters. At the same time they and Obama have to realize that sometimes that means they will miss out on stuff. If Obama didn't think he could balance the job and his role as a father, he needed to think about that 2 years ago.

And of course...imagine if Bush had done this.

Elsewhere in the world today

I think I saw 2 or 3 people lying on the ground in blood & IRG started to move them, probably hide them.

Close it up

Exposing Liberal Hypocrisy On The Iraq War: Yes You Can!

While the GOP and Bush did act incompetently in regards our border, as has Democrats for decades, to lay Obama solely at the feet of Bush and the GOP is not only inaccurate, but unfair.

The GOP’s largest mistake was joining with Democrats in demonizing Bush, who faced an unprecedented 8 years of attacks and undermining of his administration from the Democrats and their leftist cabal.

Obama was not a mistake brought about about 8 years of Bush, but by 14 years of planning, setting the stage and demonizing conservatism, ridiculing Republicans (many of who brought it on themselves) and by craftily protecting their own from exposure.

During this time, they stacked courts, schools, corporations and government as well as their support groups with plans of a complete takeover, while we sat back and cringed and refused to support Bush or his worthy causes (other than the War on Terror.)

We failed to protect good Representatives we had while Democrats attacked at every chance.

We failed to get behind Bush and watch his flanks, while demanding better performance from him in regards our borders.

We failed because we got complacent after 1994 and whenever a Republican was thought to be or accused of outside our own definition of a conservative, demanded their expulsion, while patting ourselves on the backs that we were “clean.”

Mark Foley was gay, but broke no laws. Tom DeLay was accused, but has not been tried. The list goes on and on, but the point is, these were our strong players on our behalf and we abandoned them for some Puritan ethic that allowed the Democrats to drive that wedge between the GOP.

At the same time, we replaced some with weaker Republicans, thinking they were “clean” when they were more left than some Democrats.

No, don't put it all off on Bush, accept your part as well.

Bogus Poll Alert-- NY Times Over Samples Dems to Find Support For Nationalized Health Care

Another day... Another biased state-run media poll...
The New York Times over sampled democrats to pretend that Americans want nationalized health care:

Americans overwhelmingly support substantial changes to the health care system and are strongly behind one of the most contentious proposals Congress is considering, a government-run insurance plan to compete with private insurers, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

The poll found that most Americans would be willing to pay higher taxes so everyone could have health insurance and that they said the government could do a better job of holding down health-care costs than the private sector.

Yet the survey also revealed considerable unease about the impact of heightened government involvement, on both the economy and the quality of the respondents’ own medical care. While 85 percent of respondents said the health care system needed to be fundamentally changed or completely rebuilt, 77 percent said they were very or somewhat satisfied with the quality of their own care.
But, Bruce Kesler discovered the Old Gray Lady spoke with two democrats for every one Republican polled:

According to the actual poll data, of the 73% of respondents who said they voted in 2008 only 34% voted for McCain and 66% for Obama. The actual vote was 48% McCain. So, 29% of McCain voters ignored by the poll must not be Americans, according to the NYTs methodology, and there are about as much an overpolling of Obama voters. NYT's Shady Lady polling.

If he does suspend elections or the Constitution, then he does so at his own peril. The US Military has sworn an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America...not a black, feurer-prinz wanna-be.

Dear Leader's Approval Index Goes Negative For First Time.. Down 32 Points Since January

Maybe it's his record unemployment rate?
Maybe it's his record deficit and irresponsible spending?
Maybe it's his silence on the Iranian crisis?

Whatever the reason, Barack Obama has dropped 32 points in less than 200 days:

Rasmussen reported:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows that 32% of the nation's voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-four percent (34%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -2. That’s the President’s lowest rating to date and the first time the Presidential Approval Index has fallen below zero for Obama (see trends).

PS: if you're new to all this and don't understand why we're mad at the Canadian Human Rights Commissions, well, there's this...

This pretense, that the HRCs and HRTs are interested in equality, is put to the lie by the fact that no Muslim, no matter how radical, hateful or extreme his views, has ever been hauled in front of a HRT for voicing his religious views on homosexuality, women, or any other subject.

We're all familiar by now with the case of the Christian minister who was not only  ordered to publish an apology in a local newspaper for giving his expressed interpretation of the biblical view of homosexuality, but also ordered to refrain in perpetuity from ever restating such views again, even in private  emails. It's beyond dispute at this point that the CHRC proscribes certain political views in the interests of strengthening those they support.

And you can read all about it in my book The Tyranny of Nice.

Update on Recovery Act Lobbying Rules: New Limits on Special Interest Influence
White House Blog
FRIDAY, MAY 29TH, 2009 AT 5:35 PM

Posted by Jesse Lee. Another update from Norm Eisen, special counsel to the president for ethics and government reform, in the spirit of transparency as always:

I am writing with an update on the President’s March 20, 2009 Memorandum on Ensuring Responsible Spending of Recovery Act Funds. Section 3 of the Memorandum required all oral communications between federally registered lobbyists and government officials concerning Recovery Act policy to be disclosed on the Internet; barred registered lobbyists from having oral communications with government officials about specific Recovery Act projects or applications and instead required those communications to be in writing; and also required those written communications to be posted on the Internet.

That Memorandum instructed the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to review the initial 60 days of implementation of the stimulus lobbying restrictions, to evaluate the data, and to recommend modifications.

Following OMB’s review, the Administration has decided to make a number of changes to the rules that we think make them even tougher on special interests and more focused on merits-based decision making.

First, we will expand the restriction on oral communications to cover all persons, not just federally registered lobbyists. For the first time, we will reach contacts not only by registered lobbyists but also by unregistered ones, as well as anyone else exerting influence on the process. We concluded this was necessary under the unique circumstances of the stimulus program.

Second, we will focus the restriction on oral communications to target the scenario where concerns about merit-based decision-making are greatest –after competitive grant applications are submitted and before awards are made. Once such applications are on file, the competition should be strictly on the merits. To that end, comments (unless initiated by an agency official) must be in writing and will be posted on the Internet for every American to see.

Third, we will continue to require immediate internet disclosure of all other communications with registered lobbyists. If registered lobbyists have conversations or meetings before an application is filed, a form must be completed and posted to each agency’s website documenting the contact.

OMB will be consulting with agencies, outside experts and others about these principles and will publish detailed guidance, but we wanted to update interested parties on the outcome of the initial review. We consulted very broadly both within and outside of government (including as reflected in previous posts on the White House blog) and we are grateful to all those who participated in the process.

Extra money that I banked, and we used for special trips and other things we needed. My income is fixed ,but we get Cola’s. Last years COLA was .01 % , Yes. you read that right.
My cushion has become less and less as gas and food prices go up. I planned well and my house is paid for, but the County raised my property taxes by 7% last year.

Now Obama has printed a Trillion dollars out of thin air and I am looking at inflation to eat my savings. The Cap and trade will double my electric bill, The practice of not drilling for American oil will drive up my fuel oil heating costs, and Obama’s health care bill will drive my insurance out of business and leave me with rationed care.

I try to be optimistic, but every day the democrats who are running things are sending us farther into the hole.
I feel lucky, many seniors who have even less cushion than I are already out looking for jobs.

How’s that change doing for me.?"

SALENA ZITO: Walpin’s Firing Reflects Money’s Role in Politics.

In the political patronage system, if big-time donors think they are being harassed - which may simply mean they have run afoul of the law or of reporting requirements - they are too-often forgiven, depending on the seriousness of the offense and how likely it is to be publicly reported or prosecuted.

The press could help keep things honest, but we all know that the press is working with fewer resources and fewer readers - and Walpin’s firing is not a YouTube sort of story.

Well, that and they’re doing their best to protect Obama from any bad news.

Ruh-Roh! White House Says Obama Health Care Promises Should Not Be Taken Literally.

You peasants better get in line, and shaddup:

THE CAPRICIA MARSHALL TAX STORY makes TaxProf. Also Skippy, who observes: “Apparently this woman is clueless on the protocol we working slobs of the country have to adhere to. If one of us ‘non wealthy, non connected’ americans didn’t file tax returns for 2 years, we’d have the irs breathing down our neck threatening to take everything we have.”

Plus, from The Tax Lawyer: “I was going to add up how many Obama appointees/employees have tax problems when it dawned on me that I could save time by counting the ones who don’t.”

And since some readers questioned whether this story amounted to much, I emailed actual tax professor Paul Caron of TaxProf, and he responded:

I think it is important because (1) it fits the narrative of the Obama Administration’s ardor to raise taxes on everyone else when they themselves disdain their obligations, and only pay their taxes/file their returns when outed in the nomination process; (2) her job is protocol for goodness sense — one would think attention to detail is job requirement #1; (3) her explanation — blaming the rich cardiologist husband and the post office — is especially lame; (4) we’ll see if the tax refund storyline is really true — are they really that rich that they didn’t notice or care about the supposed $37k in tax refunds; (5) even if it is, the size of the fine for noncompliance does not excuse the failure to follow the law; if you’re stopped for DUI, it’s no defense to say that you didn’t kill anybody; and (6) the class distinction (as you note) is especially striking — for lower income folks, the “innocent spouse” defense is very hard to win, and often results in shackling the non-represented wife with the tax obligations of the crooked husband who has fled; here, the rich lady’s defense of blaming the rich husband is more acceptable in elite circles.

Point #4 reminds me of the great scene in Caddyshack with Chevy Chase:

Here’s an uncashed check for $10,000.

Keep it.

There’s a bunch of them! And a summons.

It’s yours.

Pretty pathetic, Ty.

Pathetic? Maybe for you, Lacey.

For me, there’s a subtle perfection in everything I do.

Well, I feel that way myself.

ED DRISCOLL: Let the man finish his ice cream!

Plus, tone deaf?

Why Human Rights Commissions have to go
KANGAROO COURT UPDATE: The Calgary Herald denounces Canada’s despotic “human rights” commissions. “In these despotic forums, the vehicle of choice for those who wish to silence those whose opinions they don’t like, what is conventionally called a human rights complaint is less accusation, than old-style Soviet denunciation. Not surprisingly, with no right to plead truth or fair comment, and with no obligation upon the prosecution to prove intent or follow rules of evidence–circumstantial evidence and hearsay is accepted in human-rights cases — defendants hardly ever emerge victorious from these proceedings.” Should these be established in the United States, it would be ground for revolution, or at least some “out of doors political activity” of the tar-and-feathers variety.

Meanwhile, while Iran burns, Obama goes out for ice cream....

Yep, just another in a series of

The Peasants Are Hungry? Uhhhhh, Let Them Eat Wagyu! moments...

You wanted "change," Ø-merica, you got it...

Ice Cream, while Iran Screams

From his own Democrat National Convention acceptance speech. You know, the one with the styrofoam columns from the back Hollywood Lot:

Those are his words.

Here are the deeds:

Hooray! State-Run Media Celebrates Dear Leader's Employment Opportunities

Things don't look good for Dear Leader.
Government reports have shown the economy has lost more than 1.6 million jobs since Congress approved the Stimulus bill in February. There is record unemployment in 12 states. The US unemployment rate rose from 7.6% to 9.4% under Obama... the highest rate in 25 years.

Thankfully Dear Leader can rely on the state-run media to run a fluff piece on his wonderdrous employment opportunities:

Yep. Thanks to Barack Obama!
Yahoo celebrates these taxpayer-funded jobs created from the record $787 billion Stimulus Bill.

President Barack Obama's plan to get the U.S. economy going has a strong focus on creating jobs. Two of the bills he's recently signed, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the Making Home Affordable program, provide funding that will create a wide variety of job opportunities with good salaries. Better yet, many of these jobs don't require a four-year degree, so job-seekers may be able to move into these careers pretty quickly.
Unreal. Could you even imagine a Republican getting this kind of press with an unemployment rate at 9.4%?
Never in a thousand years.

Shop Class as Soulcraft

For Father's Day, I am recommending Matthew Crawford's 2006 essay about work, of the above title, in The New Atlantis. One quote:

...the time is ripe for reconsideration of an ideal that has fallen out of favor: manual competence, and the stance it entails toward the built, material world. Neither as workers nor as consumers are we much called upon to exercise such competence, most of us anyway, and merely to recommend its cultivation is to risk the scorn of those who take themselves to be the most hard-headed: the hard-headed economist will point out the opportunity costs of making what can be bought, and the hard-headed educator will say that it is irresponsible to educate the young for the trades, which are somehow identified as the jobs of the past. But we might pause to consider just how hard-headed these presumptions are, and whether they don’t, on the contrary, issue from a peculiar sort of idealism, one that insistently steers young people toward the most ghostly kinds of work.

I see he has expanded his thoughts into a new book. An excerpt from the book appeared in The NYT Magazine last month: The Case for Working with your Hands. A quote from that:

High-school shop-class programs were widely dismantled in the 1990s as educators prepared students to become “knowledge workers.” The imperative of the last 20 years to round up every warm body and send it to college, then to the cubicle, was tied to a vision of the future in which we somehow take leave of material reality and glide about in a pure information economy. This has not come to pass. To begin with, such work often feels more enervating than gliding. More fundamentally, now as ever, somebody has to actually do things: fix our cars, unclog our toilets, build our houses.

When we praise people who do work that is straightforwardly useful, the praise often betrays an assumption that they had no other options. We idealize them as the salt of the earth and emphasize the sacrifice for others their work may entail. Such sacrifice does indeed occur — the hazards faced by a lineman restoring power during a storm come to mind. But what if such work answers as well to a basic human need of the one who does it? I take this to be the suggestion of Marge Piercy’s poem “To Be of Use,” which concludes with the lines “the pitcher longs for water to carry/and a person for work that is real.” Beneath our gratitude for the lineman may rest envy.

Some days, definitely. Other days, more abstract work is just fine. 50/50 might be ideal for me, but a work-out in a gym is no substitute for doing something physical and real. We men need to engage mind and muscle together to feel whole.

You can see it in any little boy, and it never goes away. Chain saws, brush wackers and tractors are my skill level.
