Chemical analyses of teeth from 41 human skeletons excavated on Easter Island revealed the inhabitants ate rats rather than seafood; Here, Moai statues at Ahu Tongariki on the south-eastern part of the island, where 26 of the skeletons were found.

The inhabitants of Easter Island consumed a diet that was lacking in seafood and was, literally, quite ratty.

The island, also called Rapa Nui, first settled around A.D. 1200, is famous for its more than 1,000 "walking" Moai statues, most of which originally faced inland. Located in the South Pacific, Rapa Nui is the most isolated inhabited landmass on Earth; the closest inhabitants are located on the Pitcairn Islands about 1,200 miles (1,900 kilometers) to the west.....

I doubt rats or any mammals are indigenous to the Island. They probably came with the original inhabitants, and killed off any large birds, leaving only the dang rats to eat.

“What’s for dinner tonight, mom?”
“Rat soup.”
“Aw, not again. What about tomorrow?”
“Rat on a stick.”

They forgot to bring cats when they settled on the island. Had they brought cats to eat the rats, they might have had a more varied and better diet because the rats wouldn’t have wiped out any other kind of animal on the island.

Let’s guess again....41 skeletons...found as a group...did they actually eat the rats or had rats become the occupiers of the dead....aka....a rat nest.

Yeah, with all those well-fed cats running wild, they could’ve invented Taco Bell! :-)

Thank you for http://news.softpedia.com/news/Easter-Island-s-First-Inhabitants-Chiefly-Ate-Rats-Investigations-Reveal-386494.shtml

That article said "By the looks of it, a handful of islanders nonetheless ate fish, and did so on a regular basis."

So, the "No Seafood" meme is bogus.

Coming soon to a state fair food vendor. Dipped in batter, and deep fried...yum yum.

I worked with a guy from Easter Island. Everyday at lunch he would open his lunchbox and say Dang it! Rat again. Finally someone asked him why he didn’t have his wife fix something else. My wife? he says. I make my own lunch.

Or again: They were a group of prisoners who had nothing else to eat.

These "scientists" have a remarkable lack of imagination.

So they built enormous statues with glowing white coral eyes looking out across the vast emptiness asking...

“Where are all the fish?”
