Were the Vikings Smoking Pot While Exploring Newfoundland?
Live Science ^ | July 15, 2019 | Owen Jarus

Located in northern Newfoundland, the site of L'Anse aux Meadows was founded by Vikings around A.D. 1000. Until now, archaeologists believed that the site was occupied for only a brief period...

In August 2018, an archaeological team excavated a peat bog located nearly 100 feet (30 meters) east of the Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows. They found a layer of "ecofacts" -- environmental remains that may have been brought to the site by humans -- that were radiocarbon dated to the 12th or 13th century.

These ecofacts include remains of two beetles not native to Newfoundland -- Simplocaria metallica, from Greenland, and Acidota quadrata, from the Arctic. The layer also held pollen from Juglans (walnuts) and from Humulus (cannabis), two species that don't naturally grow at L'Anse aux Meadows; rather, the Vikings could have picked up all of these plant and animal species when they sailed south.

They also found the remains of dung from grazing caribou, as well as remains of wood and charcoal. The layer from the peat bog is similar to other "cultural layers from across the Norse North Atlantic," the archaeological team wrote in the journal article.

Additionally, the archaeologists performed Bayesian analysis -- a type of statistical analysis -- on radiocarbon dates from artifacts previously excavated at L'Anse aux Meadows. That analysis also suggested Viking occupation for up to 200 years.

[snip] Once upon a time, cannabis and humulus (hops) were the same plant. About 27 million years ago, cannabis and hops diverged from their common ancestor and evolved as separate botanical species. [/snip]

Sounds like they were makin’ beer. That’s a better fit, right there.

Marijane flowers would make one heck of a skunky brew.

Maybe they just weren't that motivated to leave until the chips ran out.

Thanks for the ping!

Cannabis was used medicinally in the old world & in America until the early 1900’s.

Shame there was ever a federal prohibition placed on it at all. What a waste.

Hemp was probably grown to make cordage and sails for their boats. Rowing is hard work and sailing by wind is fun. They may have smoked it as well but its primary purpose was utilitarian.

“Everyone in Middle Earth left The Shire alone just to get the leaf supplies. I’m tellin’ ya, something was going on with those furry-footed six-meal-a-day do-nothings.”

That made me laugh and choke on my second breakfast.

There was a beer down at the class VI that was so ridiculously cheap I had to buy it. It had a name something like “Sallienbruei” or something like that that came in bottles similar to Grolsch (I cant presently find anything similar in searches). When I opened the first one my whole room stunk like skunk. It tasted worse. I dumped it out and swore I would never open another.

Not sure what to do with it the case sat there for about 3 months and one day I was eating a sandwich and got hard up for something to drink so I opened another. That one tasted pretty bad but I managed to get it down.

A couple of weeks later something possessed me to open another and it was still incredibly skunky but this time it didn’t bother me so I drank the rest of the case.

It quickly became my favorite at least in part because others stopping by didn’t want anything to do with it and of course that’s all I had.

Your proposed brew might find a dedicated following of those with the acquired taste.
