Critical Threats: Blank When None
Al Qaeda’s Yemen Connection, America and the Global Islamic Jihad

December 30, 2009 — The attempt to destroy Northwest Airlines flight 253 en route from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day underscores the growing ambition of al Qaeda's Yemen franchise, which has grown from a largely Yemeni agenda to become a player in the global Islamic jihad in the last year. Since merging with the al Qaeda franchise in Saudi Arabia last January and renaming itself Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), it has stepped up operations in Yemen itself, struck into Saudi Arabia, and now operates on the global stage. The weak Yemeni government of President Ali Abdallah Salih, which has never fully controlled the country and now faces a host of growing problems, will need significant American support to defeat AQAP.

Al Qaeda has long been active in Yemen, the original homeland of Osama bin Laden's family, and one of its first major terror attacks was conducted in Aden in 2000, when an al Qaeda cell nearly sank the USS Cole. A year ago, the al Qaeda franchises in Saudi Arabia and Yemen merged after the Saudi branch had been effectively repressed by the Saudi authorities under the leadership of Deputy Interior Minister Prince Muhammad bin Nayif. The new AQAP showed its claws last August, when it almost assassinated the prince with a suicide bomber who had passed through at least two airports on the way to his attempt on Nayif.

(snip)

The attack on the Amsterdam-Detroit flight also shows that al Qaeda remains obsessed with striking the American airline industry, a target it has gone after repeatedly since 1999. If AQAP has now been told by the al Qaeda core leadership to take on the job, we can probably assume that other al Qaeda franchises in North Africa, Iraq, Southeast Asia and elsewhere have also been pressed to attack.

A Northwest Airlines spokesman says a flight from Detroit to Orlando was briefly diverted to Tennessee after someone found a suspicious package that turned out to be a Christmas ornament. A spokesman for the airline said the flight was diverted out of “an abundance of caution.”

The anatomy of a suicide bomber

Snips: Though the posts under the screen name Farouk1986 have not been officially confirmed to be Abdulmutallab’s, security officials have said they are investigating them, and the events described by the poster closely follow the 23-year-old’s life.

Farouk1986 describes himself as Nigerian, at boarding school, and talks about his summer in Yemen in 2005. He introduces himself as Umar, but “you can call me Farouk”, the name by which Abdulmutallab’s friends and family also knew him.

Farouk1986 asks for a link to a “jihad forum” from a fellow Islamic Forum contributor calling himself Jihad4Ever, going on to say he hopes to meet the other posters in another forum where they can share “useful knowledge”.

“I imagine how the great jihad will take place, how the Muslims will win insha Allah and rule the whole world, and establish the greatest empire once again!!!” he wrote in February 2005.

The Myth of acting alone

Snips: Perhaps none of the generally-accepted conventional wisdom items on the recent jihadist attacks is as dangerous as the constantly-repeated refrain that the individuals "acted alone." While the acts may have been carried out by individuals, they are all part and parcel of the broader Islamist movement to recreate the caliphate as Allah's kingdom on earth. There are push and pull factors and actors that part of a coherent whole that work with these individuals to make their actions possible.

So, you have lonely, alienated and unhappy people, in effect being told that their alienation is a sign that they are close to Allah and on their way to salvation. What is required of them? To use whatever means available to attack the current system perpetrated by infidels, and bring about a new, Islamic world.

Don’t blame us for the undies bomber - blame the feds.

That was message the CEO of Delta Airlines delivered to his employees, saying the airline has complied with every government security rule since 9/11 to keep passengers safe.

“Having this occur again is disappointing to all of us,” Richard Anderson said in a recorded New Year’s Eve message. “You can be certain we will make our points very clearly in Washington.”

Also, the captain and crew of Northwest Airlines Flight 253, who safely landed the plane while a suspected Al Qaeda terrorist was being tackled, will get commendations next week “for their diligence and the work they did to make sure everybody got to Detroit safely,” said Anderson.

Delta owns Northwest, which had its Flight 253 targeted on Christmas Day by a Nigerian with a bomb stashed in his skivvies.

I apologize if this has been posted already - but it’s good and some may not have read this yet...’

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab: Was in Houston in ‘08 @ Extremist Muslim U

And now we find out some of the details. You can bet this outfit is extremist. Might even have helped him out and had some tight connections with his Qaeda buddies in Yemen.

I’ve checked out the school, the AlMaghrib Institute, and it’s clearly extremist–pure Sunni extremism and hate. For those unfamiliar with the niceties (or, more appropriately, the not-niceties) of Islam, Maghrib (also Magreb) is the sunset prayer in Islam, the fourth out of five prayers in the day for Muslims. The name is ripped off from Judaism’s evening prayer, said after nightfall, Ma’ariv.

It is tied to the Islamic Society of North America, the extremist organization that Bush administration members visited and spoke to (remember Karen Hughes?). In case you forgot, like CAIR, ISNA was also an unindicted co-conspirator in funding HAMAS terrorism, as noted in the Holy Land Foundation trial.

The AlMaghrib site notes that its students “sponsored 96 orphans” a/k/a the children of terrorists (”martyrs”). Or sometimes there aren’t even those, and it’s just a straight out front funding terrorism. In this case, you can bet on that, since they sponsored the “orphans” through Islamic Relief, a HAMAS/Al-Qaeda charity, which I’ve written about and the fundraisers for which I’ve infiltrated undercover.

Among its instructors is Suhaib Webb, an Oklahoma born White guy who converted to Islam, who studied in Egypt at Al-Azhar University a/k/a Kill the Jews and the Americans U. Webb is tight with Siraj Wahhaj, the unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 Al-Qaeda World Trade Center bombing, and has given Wahaj a testimonial for fundraising purposes.

Fanatics march in war heroes’ town (UK)

ISLAMIC extremists plan to cause outrage by marching through a town that has become a symbol of our lost war heroes.

Ranting Anjem Choudary said they will even carry COFFINS through Wootton Bassett.

The bodies of most of the British troops killed in Afghanistan have been driven through the town near Swindon, Wilts, in repatriation ceremonies after being flown home....

Sadly, I think we are going back to the Crusades somewhere around the 15th century religious wars.

Thank you for posting what are probably online forum comments made by the recent Panty Bomber.

I noticed elsewhere, in the title of an article I didn't have a chance to read that he was depeicted as both depresses & lonely, and that this has been poo poohed by many --- but aren't those characteristics which make one so 'ripe' for CULT INDOCTRINATION?

I don’t. Or at least if I understand what you mean. The crusades were a massive coordinated assalt, uhm..... I seriously doubt the West has the will & motivation required to launch anything whatsoever resembling the crusades. Perhaps I am being unduly pessimistic, perhaps I’m naive, but I see individuals, here & there, but not even nations, much less a combined effort of nations as the Western Civilization.

Brooklyn used to be known as “The City of Churches”.

They will have to rename it “City of Mosques”.

US plane bomber wanted to study sharia in Yemen

- A Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a U.S. airliner told his parents he wanted to study Islamic sharia law in Yemen shortly before cutting off contact with them, the Nigerian government said on Tuesday.

From goodness personified to deadly CIA attack suspect

Snips: Jalaluddin Haqqani, who visited the Reagan White House and was once described by Texas politician Charlie Wilson as "goodness personified", is believed by some US officials to have ordered the attack from his hideout in neighbouring Pakistan.

Mr Haqqani received thousands of dollars in financial support, arms shipments and provided the US with valuable intelligence. But after the Taliban seized power, he became more hostile to the West. After 9/11, Mr Haqqani, who had forged links with Osama bin Laden, was named number three on the hit-list of America's most wanted. Mr Wilson retained a fondness for him. Last year, he said: "I'd love to see him. I'd try to persuade him the Taliban was a force for destruction – which he definitely wasn't."

Terror handbook artist appeals for watchdog's aid

Snips: The government's anti-terror law watchdog has become involved in an artist's attempt to use jihadist handbooks and extremist tracts in his work.

Lord Carlile of Berriew has advised Xenofon Kavvadias after the Metropolitan police warned the Greek artist he could be arrested and prosecuted under the Terrorism Act if he mounts an exhibition featuring texts such as The Islamic Ruling on the Permissibility of Martyrdom Operations, a justification for suicide bombings used by Chechen extremists.

He now wants to install a bookshelf in an art gallery stocked with texts presented in court to secure terrorism convictions. They include Defence of Muslim Lands by Sheikh Abdullah Azzam, a jihadist who influenced Osama bin Laden, The Mujahideen Poisons Handbook, which details how to kill using homemade ricin and how to make poisons from tobacco and potatoes, and the Manual of Afghan Jihad (also known as the al-Qaida Manual), which explains how to plan, finance and execute terror attacks.

Hi there, DJtex....

How many different incidents are you aware of from your area? You mentioned something about it last night. I am curious if you have heard about this one which is posted on FR, and which I posted a link to, here on THE THREAT MATRIX about a security gate left unattended for at least 90 minutes on Dec.16 at DFW Airport.

Did you already know about this one, too?

Thanks.

Although the financial disaster got very publicized and very intense a couple months ago in Dubai, the BBC in UK has been reporting about their financial collapse starting waaaaay back last fall, a year before the default on loans.

I am positive that you have seen THAT specific skyscraper online somewhere before. That is just my OPINION, and it seems you get around online all over the place, so I believe that you've seen it before. So I think that the crumbling skyscraper in your nightmare is a SYMBOL.

Of what?

Of the pyramid on the dollar bill ------ it seems that daily there are numerous articles posted at FR about the COLLAPSE of the DOLLAR; this is my reaction to YOUR dream, but the dream was YOURS, and you will know in time what it meant.

Say... what did you eat before you retired last night??? LOL

We must not forget, of course, that he grew up as a muslim, and I've read quite a few opinion pieces that growing up islam can interfere with the ability to use reason, to think logically.

So although MANY people of his age group apparently go through depressions and periods of lonliness, NOT very many will be attracted to the extremist fringe violence of jihadi martyrdom.

I think that the mom & dad are going to tell us alot more about thier son, as I believe that warning signs started MANY years ago, ya know?

Does anybody here feel bad for the dad? Things I've read about him, not much of course, are so reminescent of things you read about the parents of young adult children who disappear into strange religious cults. So sad.
