:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Critical Threats: Blank When None
Al Qaeda’s Yemen Connection, America and the Global Islamic Jihad

December 30, 2009 — The attempt to destroy Northwest Airlines flight 253 en route from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day underscores the growing ambition of al Qaeda's Yemen franchise, which has grown from a largely Yemeni agenda to become a player in the global Islamic jihad in the last year. Since merging with the al Qaeda franchise in Saudi Arabia last January and renaming itself Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), it has stepped up operations in Yemen itself, struck into Saudi Arabia, and now operates on the global stage. The weak Yemeni government of President Ali Abdallah Salih, which has never fully controlled the country and now faces a host of growing problems, will need significant American support to defeat AQAP.

Al Qaeda has long been active in Yemen, the original homeland of Osama bin Laden's family, and one of its first major terror attacks was conducted in Aden in 2000, when an al Qaeda cell nearly sank the USS Cole. A year ago, the al Qaeda franchises in Saudi Arabia and Yemen merged after the Saudi branch had been effectively repressed by the Saudi authorities under the leadership of Deputy Interior Minister Prince Muhammad bin Nayif. The new AQAP showed its claws last August, when it almost assassinated the prince with a suicide bomber who had passed through at least two airports on the way to his attempt on Nayif.

(snip)

The attack on the Amsterdam-Detroit flight also shows that al Qaeda remains obsessed with striking the American airline industry, a target it has gone after repeatedly since 1999. If AQAP has now been told by the al Qaeda core leadership to take on the job, we can probably assume that other al Qaeda franchises in North Africa, Iraq, Southeast Asia and elsewhere have also been pressed to attack.

Every time I think of the "green" agenda, I can't help but think of the slime behind it.

Should be your tagline

Seriously....is this part of the plan in Bo’s Adminisration?

Are those he appoints very much aware they are short term and that at any time they will have to go if the heat gets to hot. In other words nobody’s getting thrown under the bus..rather these Zars and his staff are very much expendable and know this coming in? .....With a line in waiting to take their places....

We’ve done that a couple of times for national travel. Worked fine. But, most of our travel is to South America, China and Eastern Europe (business trips)....usually on fairly short notice, with multiple destinations. Won’t work for that.

The older I get, the more I hate to travel. I’ve done way too much of it, the glamour is gone. And it’s getting worse all the time. I just want to hunker down in my house in the woods, keep the fireplace going, read and make soup.

For example, Islam persuaded brass to sack a Pentagon analyst, Stephen Coughlin, after he advised cutting off outreach to ISNA...!?!?!

Excellent post WCG, thank you. This is getting more than frustrating. PC is going to be the death of this great country.

I understand how the glamore can wear off. Friends who travel alot have said the same thing, though they travel mostly in the states.

I think all things we think are glamourous, for a time, can wear thin. I was in the fashion industry for several years and trust me it is not all those think it’s cracked up to be. Wears thin really fast. So I left it. But I did get to meet some interesting people along the way.

.. Later I found politics was much more exciting because you could make a difference...(or so I thought)..and did do just that on a local level more than national.
Had to learn quickly, even at that level, who the players were and who was who behind the scene. Once that’s learned you know who you’re up against and can make a difference.

Oh yeah, warm fire, good book and soup! Doesn’t get much better than that!

Politics is exciting, and one person can make a difference. I worked for Dick Cheney when we lived in Wyoming. I campaigned my hiney off for him.....and have never regretted it. He was awesome then and still is. Since we moved to So. Dakota, I’ve worked hard to dump Daschle (sucessfully) and am on Thune’s local team now. He is great and I really think he will go far. My money and time all go to local/state issues and candidates. Grassroot efforts trickle up.

Off topic, but in my HS days it was Adorn Hairspray. I was shocked when shopping last week to see that Aqua Net is still being sold. I use hair spray these days (besides the good stuff) to kill errant spiders.

“Politics is exciting, and one person can make a difference”....... “Grassroot efforts trickle up.”

This is true for the most part. But it does seem the higher one goes the more corrupt, perhaps they just hide it better.

I really enjoyed local politics, although where I am now I have no interest. Moved from Ohio to be closer to my family. Transfered with company and seemed like things just fell into place to make this change. So excited to be near family again but I failed to investigate the community here. It’s beyond awful!

All grants state and otherwise go to an elite community in the corner of the county here, which indirectly and directly benifits the city of Pittsburgh,( who is broke and under state control.) yet in an entirely different county. Talk about tricky politics!!! I am seeing even at a local level the big boys are laying claims.

I spoke to local political leaders about this but there was not one who cared one way or another....this community has no desire to improve the area and it shows. Let alone fight anything that would change it.

Good for you to make the differences where you’ve been and are! I envy you..for now tsk tsk. I cannot imagine working with Cheney! How exciting was that!!!!! and I got a kick out of watching Daschle get “dumped”..good going!

I still have the “Dump Daschle” sticker on my very large trash can. My garbage man loves it.

You could always move to western So. Dakota. ULTRA conservative country here.

Being with family is the best. Fortunately, most of mine is right here with us.

Yeah, Pittsburgh is so blue there aren’t any reds who will run against them! But of course that explains why they’re bankrupt! Sad!

Oh my family has lived all over. From Calif. to R.I. and Pa. to Florida. But I loved the community I was In Ohio best and miss it terribly. But it’s at least 5hr. drive to see family and that trip even got old. Western pa. is not a very good place for a conservative, though there are pockets I understand.

Have an acquaintance who moved to a ranch in Colorado and just loves it! Lots of acreage and great scenery. Dakotas get really cold don’t they?

Yes, it gets really cold here. We have several days a year below zero....but we also have several days a year over 100 degrees. I love the weather extremes and the definite change of seasons. Our weather is never boring.
