Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A second black pro-life leader has issued comments urging incoming president Barack Obama to reverse course on abortion and oppose instead of promoting it. Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is leading a group of African Americans with a pro-life message for Obama.
Her comments come on the heels of Day Gardner asking Obama to oppose abortion as president.
King and a group of community leaders are gathering in Atlanta today to discuss an agenda to be presented to Obama regarding his first 100 days in office.
They say they appreciate that Obama is the first black president to serve in the White House and say that is a milestone for America. However, they believe that achievement will be undone if Obama promotes abortion as he has said he would do.
"African Americans, like many Americans are pro-life," King told LifeNews.com in a Tuesday statement.
"As we see the dawn of a new year and a great milestone being passed, people across the country should let our new president know that we want babies in the womb protected," she added.
The group plans to release an official statement on Wednesday.
"The accomplishment of an African American holding the nation's highest office will be of little value if the black community continues to be destroyed by the horrible plagues of society such as: abortion's harmful effects on our women and children, teen pregnancy," King's group says.
"The genocide must end. We are one human race, and it's time to stand up for the truth. It's time to stand up for life, liberty, and family," it adds.
It continues, "We need to let Barack Obama know that our children's lives are more important than the money and political support of the abortion lobby, and that of all of the other special interests groups that destroy our quality of life. This nation was founded upon life, liberty, and justice for all."
The group will release their "open letter" to Obama, members of Congress, state legislators and other officials on Wednesday at the Georgia State Capitol.
