Bishops tell Catholics to disobey 'unjust laws
St. Louis Today ^ | 13 Apr 2012 | David Gibson

Posted on 04/13/2012 12:08:15 AM PDT by Cronos

The nation's Roman Catholic bishops called Thursday for a national campaign in defense of religious liberty, and urged resistance to laws that church officials consider unjust.

...The statement by the bishops' Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty was released Wednesday, and its chief concern is President Barack Obama's proposal to provide contraception coverage to all employees with health insurance, including those who work for religious groups.

The statement includes an explicit threat of widespread civil disobedience by the nation's 67 million Catholics.

"If we face today the prospect of unjust laws, then Catholics in America, in solidarity with our fellow citizens, must have the courage not to obey them," the statement says. "No American desires this. No Catholic welcomes it. But if it should fall upon us, we must discharge it as a duty of citizenship and an obligation of faith."

..."What is at stake is whether America will continue to have a free, creative and robust civil society — or whether the state alone will determine who gets to contribute to the common good, and how they get to do it," the statement says. "This is not a Catholic issue. This is not a Jewish issue. This is not an Orthodox, Mormon or Muslim issue. It is an American issue."

...

Religious progressives and church-state watchdogs quickly pushed back.

The Rev. C. Welton Gaddy, head of the Interfaith Alliance, argued that while he agrees there are genuine threats to religious freedom, the bishops' fight against contraception coverage means that "the Catholic Church's definition of religious freedom is one that is only concerned with its own beliefs and practices and makes no room for those whose views differ." ..

** call to arms**
About time.

BTW, I see that C Welton Gaddy is a Baptist Preacher from Monroe, LA..What kind of Baptist supports abortions and hangs out with Vicky Gene Robinson? Is he a for real Baptist, or a member of some spin off Baptist organization?

Okay, I looked him up on the internet..
Northminster Church has always been most closely affiliated with the Alliance of Baptists (a movement of progressive Christians — individuals and congregations — seeking to respond to the continuing call of God in a rapidly changing world)

Good for them. I just hope they do it smart and educate their flocks about what makes certain laws unjust in the religious context. Our non-denominational pastor dis a bang-up job of explaining how we obey the governments that God has put over us, but how there are real exceptions and how conflicts with God’s Will and Jesus’s teachings are the basis for disobedience. He also made sure we knew that there are likely to be ramificatins if we decide to put our Faith an d love of Jesus first beocause those making/enforcing the laws do not have the same life value systems...

Religious progressives...

Matthew 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

IMO people may not have considered that an organization, or group, can come in the name of Christ, or 'preaching' Christ, just as easily as an individual.

Thanks for the post, Cronos.

Mr. David Gibson of StLToday (a/k/a) pravda) not only poses his 'story' as if Liberty were only religious - a fundamental category error in itself - but also as if he is oblivious to the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence.

The the imagery suggested by Benjamin Franklin for the Great Seal in August 1776:

"We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. . . whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive to these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

Cordially,

better late than never, yes. Lawmakers who support baby-murders must be excommunicated, full stop. Those who support contraception should be warned — excommunication is a strong punishment.

For a true Catholics it is a death sentence. Being denied the light of Christ for ever.
The scene in “Beckett” when he Excommunicated someone was chilling. When all the Priests tipped over their candles.WOW

I hate it when Socialists reframe an argument to create a fictional issue.

The issue is forcing Catholics to accept others practices in their OWN Catholic facilities and not Catholics imposing their beliefs OUTSIDE their OWN Catholic facilities.

That statement is just ignorant in so many ways.

No Catholic welcomes it. But if it should fall upon us, we must discharge it as a duty of citizenship and an obligation of faith.”

If it comes to this, and it very well might, what does that say about the lack of discipline from bishops? I mean, if the American Church refuses to comply, and the public Catholics who publicly supported the mandate are still free to publicly call themselves good Catholics without a dissenting word from bishops? What mesage does that send to ‘regular’ Catholics who are watching?

I mean if it comes to a general Catholic strike and discipline still isn’t tried as a teaching tool, just how big a deal do the bishops think it is? It’s like fighting a fire but not yelling “fire!” or calling the fire dept. It just gives the impression that it really isn’t too big a deal when you get right down to it, as far as I can tell anyhow.

Over 100 Bishops Have Spoken Out on Priority of Life Issues
Posted on October 28, 2008, 11:59 AM | Deal W. Hudson
The list of U. S. bishops who have spoken out on the priority of the life issues in this election is now over 100. The list now contains 70 individual bishops and three joint statements.
I would like to continue updating this list until the day of the election. I have tried to incorporate all the comments thus far. If I dd not get them all, I apologize. (For a few of the suggestions, I could not find a suitable link.)
Please continue using the comments section to let us know what bishop is not on this list who should be. This would include any bishop who has individually, or jointly, published a statement about this election pointing out the primacy of the life issues.
Thank you for your help.
