On February 11, 2004, Kevin Jennings, the president of GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, appeared on the Fox News program The OReilly Factor to discuss what he called GLSENs new marriage curriculum for schools. He claimed it was developed in response to recent events for schools to utilize in lessons exploring the issue of same sex marriage. When asked by Bill OReilly if it presented both sides of the issue, Jennings answered, Absolutely.
The reality is that Jennings is absolutely full of baloney.
Once more, Jennings and GLSEN are not being honest. The curriculum is not at all objective but radically biased toward a pro-homosexual viewpoint. It distorts the information it provides, withholds vital additional information, and slickly manipulates student sympathies. The curriculum is also not new. We first reviewed this curriculum in 2001. It has been updated but is largely the same material.
The limitations of the GLSEN curriculum are numerous, and this material is not at all appropriate to fashion into a teaching unit for students. Titled At Issue: Marriage, the curriculum is problematic for these reasons:...
6. The influence on youth of legalizing same sex marriage is minimized, and opposition depicted as needlessly fearful and backward.
Lesson 4 is called The Notion of Influence (emphasis in original). Students are presented the text of the childrens book Daddys Roommate along with news accounts of a pro-family groups attempts to remove it from a library. The news account is predictably slanted against the traditional view. Students also read a letter to a newspaper advice column in which a woman asks whether to allow her nine-year-old daughter to be the flower girl at her uncles same sex wedding. Among the questions for discussion, is the following loaded query:
Encourage students to think carefully about the consequences of sheltering children from different people and experiences. No matter what our moral stance is on any particular issue, we all have to cohabitate in a world with others who look, think and behave differently. Are we really doing young people a service when we shield them from this inevitable diversity?(Emphasis added)...
7. The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights is presented to students and falsely depicted as justifying same sex marriage because it calls for dignity, marriage and family rights and decries discrimination.
In a brazen twisting of the intent of this 1948 document, GLSEN again tries to construct a civil right for sodomy and same sex marriage when the document never intended for such interpretations. In fact, homosexual activists have tried (so far unsuccessfully) to amend the UN Declaration to re-cast the definition of key words to cover acceptance of homosexuality.
Students are told to evaluate the actions of the Vermont legislature in light of this document in an attempt to bring the U.S. to justice by international standards outside our country. Yet, as indicated above, this document has not been revised to support homosexual unions. Again, students are given a meaningless exercise based on false information and even asked to violate U.S. sovereignty, yet they are shielded from very important truth about how far anal sex is from dignity...
10. The curriculum resource list is dominated by homosexual activist group web sites and contains no sources which support traditional values.

Your Help is Needed on the Mission America STUDENT SURVEY
You may have heard statements like the following: " 92% of high school students say they have heard homophobic remarks on their campus in the past month." Such statements come out of student surveys conducted by GLSEN, PFLAG and others, and are picked up by reporters sympathetic to their cause. They are used to persuade school boards that programs must be adopted to stop "homophobia" (defined primarily as attitudes or speech unaccepting of homosexuality).
We need a survey that tells the truth! The climate in some schools actually prevents students and teachers from speaking out to warn others about the grave risks of homosexuality, and to provide the information that it can change.
Our goal is to have at least 1000 students in U.S. public middle and high schools take the survey above.To do this, we need your help.
Simply identify students you know who attend a public middle school or high school. They may be your children or grandchildren, nieces or nephews, neighbors, or kids from church. Make copies of the survey...as many as you need--and give them to these students. Ask them to return them to you by a certain day. If you feel it's appropriate, ask them to have one or two friends complete the survey as well. If you can, have them fill out the questionnaire while you are present or nearby.
They should give their own opinions when completing the survey, and not "consult" with others as a group activity. When you have all the surveys, simply fill out the bottom of at least one of the group of surveys with your name and address, paper clip them together and mail them back to us. Our address is at the end of the survey.

An excerpt from "The Gay Youth Suicide Myth"
"... The genesis of the homosexual teen suicide myth lies in a deeply flawed and pro-homosexual report by San Francisco homosexual activist Paul Gibson. The paper, "Gay Male and Lesbian Youth Suicide," was included, as a supporting document, in a 1989 report by a special federal task force on youth suicide reporting to Dr. Louis Sullivan, former Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). However, Secretary Sullivan repudiated and distanced his department from the Gibson paper:
...the views expressed in the paper entitled 'Gay Male and Lesbian Youth Suicide' do not in any way represent my personal beliefs or the policy of this Department.
Sullivan went on to say:
Indeed, I am strongly committed to advancing traditional family values. Federal policies must be crafted with great care so as to strengthen rather than undermine the institution of the family. In my opinion, the views expressed in the paper run contrary to that aim.
Dr. David Shaffer, one of the country's leading authorities on suicide among youth, notes that Gibson's paper "was never subjected to the rigorous peer review that is required for publication in a scientific journal and contained no new research findings."...
Although Gibson's report was denounced by Secretary Sullivan, homosexual activists have skillfully used it to claim that "government statistics" support their suicide assertions. Pro-gay articles routinely (and mistakenly) cite Gibson's unproven statistics as part of the HHS task force's official conclusions on youth suicide. Gibson himself has declined an interview with the author to discuss his controversial assertions....
The myth of a gay teen suicide epidemic is built upon a flimsy statistical foundation. Gibson, a homosexual social worker in San Francisco, uses statistics from mainly homosexual sources and then extrapolates them to the general youth population using the discredited Kinsey estimate of a 10 percent gay population.
A perusal of Gibson's report turns up numerous contradictions and statistical impossibilities. For example, he refers to one author who speculated in 1985 (in the gay newspaper, The Washington Blade) that as many as 3,000 gay youths kill themselves a year-a number that exceeds the total number of annual teen suicides by more than a thousand.
To reach his core conclusions on the high rate of homosexual suicides, Gibson points to assorted gay survey studies that claim homosexual youth are far more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to have considered or to have attempted suicide. These studies rely on surveys of troubled and often runaway youth. Generally, they have found a much higher rate (two to four times higher) of suicidal tendencies in their "gay" respondents compared with their "straight" respondents. Gibson then multiplies this higher rate by the disputed Kinsey figure of a 10 percent homosexual population to produce his figure that 30 percent of all youth suicides involve homosexual youth.
David Shaffer, a Columbia University psychiatrist and specialist on adolescent suicide, has said, "I struggled for a long time over [Gibson's] mathematics, but, in the end, it seemed more hocus-pocus than math." Nevertheless, Gibson's claims have been repeated over and over as homosexual activists have made them part of their lore..."

Last night, Saturday April 17, 2004, a fundraising dinner was held on my behalf at the Coast Plaza Hotel in Calgary, Alberta. This dinner was organized and hosted by the Concerned Christian Coalition. Author of the book, Christophia, Rev. Tristan Emmanuel and myself, were the guest speakers at this event.
When I arrived at the hotel, there were a few dozen protesters, picketing in front of the hotel brandishing signs and chanting their pro-homosexual mantras.
Half way through the event a dozen or more self-proclaiming "gay activists", calling themselves the "gay militia", stormed into our meeting room at the Coast Plaza Hotel and surrounded the podium in the middle of an amazing presentation by Rev. Tristan Emmanuel. Rev. Emmanuel's informative and passionate presentation just happened to be about "Christophobia" and the persecution of Christians in today's society.
While banging on the walls and pounding drumsticks together, these protestors cursed and yelled things like, "haters and gay power" etc etc. Many were even dressed in camouflaged military apparel with masks over their faces. On and on they went and marched around the room, swearing and yelling, making complete fools out of themselves. One of them approached a lady that attended our dinner and got right in her face. I stood there ready to defend my sister in Christ concerned that the protestor would become physically violent. Hotel management had to bring in additional staff and ask them to leave and when they would not, the police had to attend and remove them. From what I hear the hotel has pursued charges against this group. Praise God!!!
It was absolutely amazing to see our group pause and join hands in the midst of this criminal outburst and pray for those that were there persecuting us. Some of us would have loved to talk with these protestors but they were far too aggressive and immature to attempt such. Coincidentally, or most likely by divine providence, I happened to be sitting with a young man who I invited as my guest, who just happens to be a homosexual. He was shocked and angered by the actions of these people.
Please pray that our Lord would move the authorities to take legal action against this group as they would certainly do to us, if we acted out in such a manner and most importantly, pray that Canadian Christians would rise up against this threat.

"From the school's standpoint, this has nothing to do with the sexual orientation of the group of people who will be there," Wolverton said. "It didn't make one bit of difference what the nature of the group was. We did not move this trip because of the fact that it's Gay Days 2002. We moved this trip because of the fact that there would be 100,000-plus adults partying down there in some of the same areas where we were going to have our kids."
Wolverton said he would have made the same decision had there been any other sort of large festival planned for that many adults..."

"The leading national organization working to end anti-gay discrimination and harassment in Americas schools today expressed concern over the decision of Creston High School officials in Creston, Iowa, to postpone a band trip to Orlando that was to coincide with the citys Gay Days festival. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, or GLSEN, said the decision and resulting controversy may further isolate lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students in local schools.
"This decision reinforces harmful stereotypes, and sends a devastating message to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and their supporters involved in the band program, school and community," stated GLSEN Executive Director Kevin Jennings. "Regardless of motive, the school has sent a message that may lead some to conclude that gay is bad - a message with dangerous and unacceptable consequences in school."...."
Regardless of motive?!. Stop and think about that. The homosexual community couldn't care less about your motives regarding the parenting of your children or their safety during school field trips. I think the principal made it clear that safety of the children was his motive for cancelling the trip.
( This was from GLSEN, the 5th largest "gay rights" (so they say) organization with 2,000 "gay-straight alliances" ( GSA's ) in public schools. This is same organization whose Day of Silence program is being held today in schools across the nation ).

Sullivan disagrees with my contention that gay marriage is not really a civil rights issue by referring to the famous Loving v Virginia miscegenation case in which Earl Warren says, "Marriage is one of the basic civil rights of man." Sullivan then adds an addendum of his own: "The right to marry whomever you wish is a fundamental civil right." This, of course, is simply not true and in no way reflects Warren's meaning. You may not marry your sister or your pet even if you wish to, and this bar to your wishes is not considered a denial of civil rights. Because marriage is defined as a heterosexual institution, its exclusion of gay unions doesn't really qualify as a denial of rights. Gays have the same right to marry as heterosexuals as long as they marry the opposite gender--as many do. If the gay marriage movement succeeds in expanding the definition of marriage to include gay unions, and if gays are then still prohibited from marrying, then we would have a clear civil rights issue. As things stand there really is no precedent or "jurisprudence" on the side of gay marriage, only on the right of all citizens to heterosexual marriage. The Loving case only made the point that interracial marriage is no bar to this right.
Sullivan then compares the old arguments against interracial marriage to my argument against gay marriage. And this points to an important theme of my argument: Racial difference is an innocuous human difference that in no way redefines the heterosexual nature of marriage or effects its procreative function. Interracial marriage has no effect on the institution of marriage. But when marriage is redefined to include homosexuality, it ends the heterosexual definition of marriage and moves marriage farther away from its grounding in procreation. It effectively makes marriage an institution more purely devoted to romantic love and adult fulfillment than to the heavier and more selfless responsibilities surrounding procreation. Of course, adult love and the responsibilities surrounding procreation are not mutually exclusive, but the gravity of marriage as an institution comes from its demand that love be negotiated through these larger responsibilities.
To be sure, there are childless heterosexual couples and homosexual couples with children. But to define an institution as important to society as marriage by exceptions to the norms of both sexual orientations--rather than by the norms themselves--makes little sense. It could be argued that marriage is quite literally an outgrowth of heterosexuality itself, an institution that follows from nature's requirement that men and women sexually merge to perpetuate the human species...
Marriage will always be heterosexual because it exists to manage the explosive natural force of male-female sex. It socializes that inherently creative force into that most fundamental of human institutions, the family. Heterosexuality is not imposed on marriage as an exclusionary ideology; it is the same thing as marriage. Homosexuality, on its own, would never generate all the complex social and cultural apparatus of family. It is impotent precisely where heterosexuality is potent; and marriage evolved out of a struggle with this potency. Without this potency, homosexuality is naturally skewed more toward adult love and fulfillment. There is nothing wrong with this. But marriage today is already declining from too much emphasis on love and too little on its role as a civilizing institution..."

Some statisticians, beginning with Kinsey, behavioral psychologists, and psychiatrists (in contrast to most psychoanalysts) supply incidence rates of certain phenomena as if behavior had no connection with motivation. On December 14, 1973 the Board of Trustees of the American Psychiatric Association, meeting in Washington, D.C., eliminated homosexuality from the official Diagnostic and Statistical Manual without presenting substantive evidence for such a drastic revision of basic concepts of healthy vs. unhealthy sexual development. It should be noted that the World Health Organization's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual has not as yet followed suit.
One of the two reasons for the removal was an official position paper (12) prepared by Dr. Robert Spitzer (Chairman, Nomenclature Task Force on Homosexuality, A.P.A.) for the Board prior to its decision. According to an article in Psychiatric News, "It was essentially upon the rationale of Dr. Spitzer's presentation that the Board made its decision."(13) This paper in essence repeated Kinsey's earlier assertion that homosexuality did not meet the requirements of a psychiatric disorder since it "does not either regularly cause subjective distress or [is] regularly associated with some generalized impairment in social effectiveness or functioning"...
The removal of homosexuality from the DSM II was all the more remarkable when one considers that it involved the out-of-hand and peremptory disregard and dismissal not only of hundreds of psychiatric and psychoanalytic research papers and reports, but also of a number of other serious studies by groups of psychologists, psychiatrists, and educators over the past seventy years (the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry Report, 1955; the New York Academy of Medicine Report, 1964; the Task Force Report of the New York County District Branch A.P.A. 1970-72). It was a disheartening attack upon psychiatric research and a blow to many homosexuals who looked to psychiatry for more help, not less...
Prior to 1973, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual had made valuable contributions our comprehension of the sexual deviations so that clinical research was beginning to fathom their ineluctable secrets. The "normalizing" of homosexuality and the consequent revision of the DSM reflecting this position cannot help but slow scientific progress, produce despair in those with a sexual deviation, and diminish efforts at prophylaxis based on sound principles of causation and treatment.

(SACRAMENTO) Today Assemblyman Dennis Mountjoy (R-Arcadia) presented a 9-word measure in the Assembly Education Committee which reads: The promotion of homosexuality in public education is prohibited.
Assemblyman Mountjoy testified, California reading scores for the 8th grade are 32nd out of 36 states nationally. Math scores are tied with Alabama for 35th out of 40 states. Science scores are abysmal. Public schools need to teach reading, writing, math, and science, not spend valuable time and resources promoting homosexuality.
School teachers, parents, and pro-family organizations testified in support of AB 1326.
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) approved materials for use in its diversity curriculum were discussed. The sexually explicit and inappropriate materials are being presented in elementary school through high school. "... Although the focus has changed somewhat. the object is still to normalize homosexuality in the schools, beginning in preschool and kindergarten.
According to one educator who has attended previous GLSEN Boston conferences, "In past years the emphasis was on children and sex. This year's conference appeared to be geared more toward teachers and a 'stealth' agenda that took the focus off sex in favor of more subtle methods, using 'gay allies' to continue the homosexual agenda in schools..."
Including "GLBT issues" in Kindergarten
Most of the workshops took place in nearby Olin Hall. Among them was: "Inclusion of GLBT Issues in the K-5 Classroom" presented by Newton 5th grade teacher Jan Shafer.
Shafer began her session by saying, "There are always going to be people - parents, administrators, students, colleagues, and maybe even your friends - who think that you shouldn't include GLBT issues in the classroom, that they don't belong in a younger grade classroom. But I think that they do, and I am assuming that you are here because you also think so." She then asked participants to write down reasons why they think GLBT issues should be shared in the K-5 classroom. Among those given:
To validate children's personal stories
To destroy "gender binary" (male-female) stereotypes
To help children learn to become comfortable in the classroom by seeing their families respected
To help kids who "ultimately will be gay when they're older" feel "validated and comfortable at a young age."
One teacher intern at the Devotion School in Brookline gave this rationale: "It's important to help children become agents of change."
Shafer recalled that several years ago, while she was still "in the closet," GLSEN executive director Kevin Jennings paid a visit to her school and: "It was at that point that I was able to begin coming out."
She expressed concern that teachers in the younger-grades in the Commonwealth are being pressured to abandon values-related and social skill-building activities in their classrooms in favor of academic activities, such as learning to write an expository essay. "That's the message I'm getting, and I think a lot of teachers are getting that, and that's kind of scary to me, and I don't think it's an easy time to be a progressive teacher in Massachusetts right now."
One method that Shafer uses to inculcate homosexual acceptance in her 5th grade classroom is by hanging a calendar that depicts gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered families. At the end of the year, she cuts the calendar up and intermixes the photos of the deviant couples with pictures of other people in a display titled "Share the World, Everyone Matters." Passing out an "Images Checklist for Anti-Bias Environments," Shafer also encouraged teachers to take stock of the images, books and pictures on their classroom walls to insure they reflect diversity.
Another method, Shafer said, is to "come out" through lessons by "sharing your life." For example, in teaching a writing lesson where students learn to organize their thoughts according to "Who, what, when, where, how and why" principles, Shafer uses an outline for a summer vacation story where the "Who" is "My partner, Lisa." In teaching grades 4th, 5th and 6th graders how to write a persuasive essay, topics such as "Our laws treat homosexuals unfairly" can be assigned.
Shafer displayed an example in math of a "distance calculation" word problem where "Sarita and her two moms" are walking to raise money for hunger relief, and "Sarita walked eight more miles than her mom Carla."
She advised prospective teachers to "come out" during job interviews by telling principals, "This is who I am, and I'm open about it, and I want to know if that's going to be a problem here, because it wouldn't really work for me to work here if that's going to be a problem."
Shafer displayed examples of white sheets she hangs in her faculty lounge that have questions at the top such as, "How can I behave so our school is safe and welcoming for gay and lesbian people?" and "What can I do if I hear homophobic language?" In the space below, colleagues can write in their own answers.
In answer to the question, "How can teachers include lesbian and gay issues in the classroom?" Shafer offered the following suggestions:
Look for the 'teachable moment.'
Use current events.
Change the sexual orientation of some of the characters in books or written assignments.
Among the handouts Shafer distributed to participants was a six-page list of "Books for Pre-K and Elementary Students" that recommended such titles for preschoolers as A Family Counting Book that "celebrates alternative families as it teaches kids to count from one to twenty," and One Dad Two Dads, Brown Dad Blue Dads by Alyson Publications. It is one of the leading producers of homosexual books, including Gay Sex: A Manual for Men Who Love Men that contains detailed instructions for homosexual men on how to avoid discovery and arrest when having sex with boys.
Other publishers on the list included Harcourt and Houghton Mifflin, as well as Tackling Gay Issues in Schools, a 230-page educators' resource binder published by GLSEN Connecticut and Planned Parenthood of Connecticut.
Shafer concluded her session by showing a 10-minute video, Both of My Moms' Names are Judy, which presents elementary school children talking about their families and their experiences with homophobia..."
"In 1973, the APA removed Homosexuality from its diagnostic category of mental illnesses. This action came not as a result of new research and findings, but was ultimately brought about by militant protest staged by activists at the APA annual convention. In other words, intimidation was a key motivation. In fact, only 16% of the entire APA membership actually voted in favor of the radical change."

The assertion that homosexuals are a true minority group is false. Minority status has been determined by the U.S. Supreme Court Based on three criteria:
1. Economic Deprivation -- NO! Those engaged in the homosexual lifestyle are among the most advantaged people in the U.S. On average, they have a higher per capita income than heterosexuals, and higher household incomes.
(W.S. Journal, 2/10/89; N.Y. Times, 8/22/90).
2. Political Powerlessness -- NO! Homosexuals demonstrate great influential political power far beyond their actual numbers. The Human Rights Campaign Fund has annually donated millions of dollars to candidates, more than most other non-corporate PACs (The Economist, 4/24/93). Media news and entertainment coverage is overwhelmingly favorable. (Turn your TV on!)
3. Immutable Characteristics -- NO! Minority groups share unchangeable, benign, non-behavioral traits such as race, ethnicity, disability or national origin. Homosexuals are the only group to claim minority status based on behavior!
The 1998 Federal Budget includes $4.746 billion for AIDS funding. That is a $465 million increase over the 1997 Budget. That is more funding than all forms of cancer combined!
Federal Money (your money) Spent per Death: AIDS/HIV: $39,172 Diabetes: $5,449 Heart Disease: $1,056 Stroke: $765 (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 1996).
An excerpt from "You're Imposing Your Morality On Everyone Else"
"... Opponents of the "gay rights" agenda have every right, through our system of government, to "push back." And while gay activists accuse opponents of special gay advantage of "mixing questions of church and state," they themselves never hesitate to appeal, with the active assistance of "liberal" clergy, to falsely-construed notions of "biblical" compassion to support their cause. Kirk and Pill suggest in this regard:"... [publicizing] support for gays by more moderate churches, raising theological objections of our own about conservative interpretations of biblical teachings... Second, we can undermine the moral authority of homophobic churches by portraying them as antiquated backwaters, badly out of step with the times and with the latest findings of psychology. Against the mighty pull of institutional religion one must set the mightier draw of Science and Public Opinion... Such an unholy alliance has worked well against churches before, on such topics as divorce and abortion. With enough open talk about the prevalence and acceptance of homosexuality, that alliance can work again here." ("The Overhauling of Straight America," op. cit.)
In Judeo-Christian tradition, true compassion never condones wrongdoing -- especially persistently selfish behavior that harms others. Forgiveness is offered to wrongdoers -- on condition that they forsake behavior destructive to themselves and others. Judeo-Christian tradition says, "Go, and sin no more" not "Go and sin much more." Gay militant leaders themselves admit the moral deficiencies of gay life. Kirk and Madsen say: "In short, the gay lifestyle -- if such a chaos can, after all, legitimately be called a lifestyle -- just doesn't work: it doesn't serve the two functions for which all social frameworks evolve: to constrain people's natural impulses to behave badly and to meet their natural needs" (After the Ball, op. cit., pg. 363)..."
"The short answer to the question, "Is homosexuality a psychopathology?" is no, if a person were to mean that the answer can be found by a quick look through the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders; Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) of the American Psychiatric Association. Homosexuality is not listed as a formal mental disorder in the DSM-IV, and hence it is not a "mental illness." But, as we will see in this chapter, answering the question, "Is homosexuality a psychopathology?" is much more complicated than simply checking a manual...
A Review of the Scientific Literature
It is widely known that in 1974 the full membership of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) followed the 1973 recommendation of its board by voting to remove homosexuality as a pathological psychiatric condition as such (or "in itself") from the DSM, which is the official reference book for diagnosing mental disorders in America (and through much of the world).
The removal of homosexuality from the DSM was in response to a majority vote of the APA. The original APA vote was called at a time of significant social change and was taken with unconventional speed that circumvented normal channels for consideration of the issues because of explicit threats from gay rights groups to disrupt APA conventions and research.
However, it appears that in contrast to the results of the vote, the majority of the APA membership continued to view homosexuality as a pathology. A survey four years after the vote found that 69% of psychiatrists regarded homosexuality as a "pathological adaptation." A much more recent survey suggests that the majority of psychiatrists around the world continue to view same-sex behavior as signaling mental illness.
The removal of homosexuality from the DSM does not answer the thorny question of the morality of homosexual behavior, as we will discuss later. It also does not answer the question of whether or not homosexual orientation is "healthy." Removal of the diagnostic category from the DSM is not the same thing as an endorsement of homosexual orientation or lifestyle as healthy or wholesome, as the two surveys conducted since the APA vote would indicate. By analogy, a person can certainly be in a condition where he or she fails to manifest an identifiable physical disease, yet also fails to be an exemplar of health and fitness...
- Homosexuality is not formally recognized as a mental disorder in the DSM. However, some mental health professionals disagree: a few years following the removal of homosexuality from the DSM, the majority of psychiatrists in America viewed homosexuality as a pathology, and the majority of psychiatrists around the world continue to see same-sex attraction as signaling a mental illness.
- Research has shown that it is not the case that all homosexuals are inherently pathological. Sometimes these findings are misrepresented to suggest that homosexuals do not experience any greater distress than heterosexuals.
- Research supports a relationship between homosexuality and personal distress (e.g., rates of depression, substance abuse and suicidality), though not all homosexuals are distressed. Some view the distress as indicating something inherently wrong with homosexuality; others view homosexuals who are distressed as a reflection of societal prejudice.
- Research on maladaptiveness is inconclusive primarily because of the lack of agreement as to what constitutes maladaptiveness. The clear evidence of relational instability and promiscuity among male homosexuals must figure as problematic for Christians.
- Homosexuality violates societal norms; however, mental health organizations have taken the formal position that societal norms have to be changed toward accepting homosexuality as a normal sexual variant.
- Research on whether homosexuality is a pathological condition is not formally relevant to the moral debate in the church. Psychological abnormality and immorality are two different things, although sometimes they overlap."
The Day of Silence was first observed in 1996 and according to www.dayofsilence.org, the day is a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) in collaboration with the United States Student Association.
Its described as a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual) bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment in effect, the silencing experienced by LGBT students and their allies.
The claim that these events are "student-led" is a ruse. It starts with adult influence and direction:
"... Gay agitation began during the 1992-93 school year. A group of teachers, led by a dedicated gay and lesbian promoter, banded together to discuss a problem. The teachers were told that gay students were being discriminated against--harassed, beaten up, and called names within the confines of the school. Although these incidents, whether real or created, would normally be handled by the dean's office, it was resolved that because the target of these incidents was gay students, more intense efforts needed to be made...
Some teachers actively taught "tolerance" from the pulpit of the classroom, and began to incorporate gay and lesbian themes into their lessons...
- Once the gay and lesbian agenda establishes itself in a district, that agenda starts to expand. It is typically first introduced under the philosophy of "making schools safe."
- Gay and lesbian activists choose words and phrases which make their agenda sound innocuous. Teachers are taught to respect diversity, but this respect is used by the activists to further a larger agenda. Teachers who oppose the group are labeled intolerant and warned of the fear and bigotry they are spreading among their students.
- There is covert spreading of rainbow symbols throughout the school. The symbols are said to stand for the broader issue of respect for diversity.
- Information about the group is quietly passed to students; soon the whole school is aware that a "pro-gay" group exists among the teachers.
- Since the group is not recognized by the school, it is impossible for parents to influence it, or ask for its closure.
- Although not official, the group gains credibility through each successive mailing, meeting, and forum.
Soon, students confused about their sexual identity begin to come out publicly, becoming activists themselves. Gay pride symbols appear on the student TV station. One boy enters the school talent show dressed in drag as Madonna; two young boys, and two girls, make public the fact that they are going to the prom "as a foursome." The idea soon grows that it is "cool," "different," and "chic" to be gay. Because the students are perceived as the initiators of these actions, there is no administrative censure.
Activist teachers become more public in their attempts to pass on the tenets of gay activism. Students are by now required to read books that have explicit gay and lesbian stories, and they are humiliated in class if they express any reservations about homosexuality.
The administration, sensing that this has become an issue, now decides to include the gay group among the school's official organizations--listing it along with other support groups for issues of divorce, alcoholism and pregnancy. A gay-activist teacher is made the head, aided by a sympathetic social worker from Project 10. Parents are not contacted if their child enters the Project 10 group.
The group's social worker now states that he believes that sexual identity is not an issue that has anything to do with values.
At a meeting of a student's discussion club, the leader of the gay activist group makes several announcements:
- The rainbow signs that had appeared throughout the school were not just "respect diversity" signs; they were actually gay pride signs. (Every counselor, by that time, already had one in his office.)
- "Tolerance" was not the goal, after all, because "tolerance" implies that there is something wrong with being gay, and of course there is not.
- Gay rights are said to be in the same category as civil rights for ethnic minorities; therefore in the future, the school will offer gay-affirmative curricula.
- The name of the support group is now "Project 10," referring to the "fact" that 10% of the population is gay..."

"The principal at Huron High School questions whether or not two teachers who participated Wednesday in a Day of Silence to advocate for gay rights should be allowed to do it again next year.
However, district officials have no policy against political activism in the classroom.
Principal Arthur Williams said he plans to have a group discussion with teachers and administrators about expectations regarding teachers' political activism in the classroom.
"I think you can talk about the various sides of the issue without advocating for any," said Williams, who added he would not be in favor of teacher participation in a Day of Silence against racism, sexism or any other social or political cause.
English teachers and co-advisors of Huron's Gay Straight Alliance Sarah Andrew-Vaughan and Aimee Grant taught without speaking on Wednesday, handing out written instructions and communicating with students on note pads and chalkboards.
They shared with students a paragraph explaining the reason for their quiet: Protest of the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning people and their allies. Williams said he did not realize that teachers had participated in the day-long event until Thursday and he thought it was going to be a "moment" of silence for students, not a whole day of speechlessness.
Although Williams is concerned about teachers expressing political viewpoints in school, district spokeswoman Liz Margolis said Ann Arbor Public Schools has no policy regulating such activity.
"We are very supportive of the groups in the schools, the gay and lesbian and transgender alliances," Margolis said. "I think as long as there was not a disruption in class and class could continue on, it probably offered kids something ..."
Andrew-Vaughan said she doesn't know whether or not it would be appropriate for a teacher to participate in a Day of Silence to express an opinion on an issue such as abortion rights or gun control, but she had no qualms about supporting gay rights.
"I think that teachers should be allowed to take a stand on Ann Arbor's non-discrimination policy and that's what I did," Andrew-Vaughan said.
Andrew-Vaughan and Williams both said Friday that no parents had called to question the teachers' activism. She said she and Grant planned their lessons carefully, gave clear written instructions and answered all students' questions in writing.
"In fact, I think that we say more with silence sometimes than we do with many words," Andrew-Vaughan said..."

The 9th annual Day of Silence will be observed on April 21, 2004, and is expected to break last years record-setting participation of more than 200,000 students and teachers in nearly 2,000 K 12 schools from across the nation.
It is with great pride and excitement that GLSEN once again prepares to coordinate the Day of Silence, said GLSEN Executive Director Kevin Jennings. We here at GLSEN are incredibly inspired by the great number of students who will be silently, yet powerfully, standing up for themselves, their peers and the ideals of safety and respect for all.
For the third straight year GLSEN is leading the coordination of the Day of Silence, which was founded in 1996 by students at the University of Virginia, and by 2002 had become a landmark national event. During the Day, participating students, teachers and faculty, take a vow of silence to protest discrimination leveled at LGBT people in their schools..."

"Dr. Charles Socarides published an historical essay, "Sexual Politics And Scientific Logic: The Issue Of Homosexuality," in The Journal Of Psychohistory, Vol. 10, No. 3, Winter, 1992. It should be of interest to all students of our socio-cultural history.
... The doctor notes that the efforts to remove homosexuality as a disorder from the DSM was accomplished by pressure from psychiatrists within the APA as well as activist homosexual groups that began disrupting psychiatric meetings and publicly attacking any psychiatrists who dared consider homosexuality to be a deviant sexual behavior.
As outside homosexual pressure groups challenged psychiatrists with hate-filled letters and threatening phone calls, pro-homosexual psychiatrists within the APA were aggressively lobbying for the normalization of homosexuality.
Pro-homosexual psychiatrists successfully seized control of various committees within the APA and began issuing reports that recommended the removal of homosexuality from the DSM. Among these was Dr. Judd Marmor, who used the networking sources provided by SIECUS (Scientific Information and Education Council of the U.S.) to promote the normalization of homosexuality.
In 1973, Marmor and other psychiatrists met with members of the Gay Activist Alliance, the Mattachine Society, the Daughters of Bilitis, and the Nomenclature Committee of the American Psychiatric Association at Columbia University to discuss deletion of homosexuality from the DSM.
Eventually, the issue was put to a vote to APA members. Only 25% of those eligible to vote sent in their ballots out of 25,000 psychiatrists. However, the vote was in favor of removing homosexuality from the DSM.
As Dr. Socarides noted: "By declaring a condition a 'non-condition,' a group of practitioners had removed it from our list of serious psychosexual disorders. The action was all the more remarkable when one considers that it involved the out-of-hand and peremptory disregard and dismissal not only of hundreds of psychiatric and psychoanalytic research papers and reports, but also of a number of other serious studies by groups of psychiatrists, psychologists, and educators over the past seventy years..."
So then, of the 25% (6250) of the APA members who actually voted, 16% (4000) voted in favor of removing homosexuality from the DSM. Look at what 4000 activist psychiatrists within the APA, along with the threats from activist homosexual groups, have accomplished.
An excerpt from "American Psychology: The Political Science" by Ray W. Johnson, Ph.D.
Ray W. Johnson, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist and founding member of the University of North Texas Psychology Department, as well as Training Director of the school's APA-accredited Counseling Psychology program. He is the co-author of a book on individual assessment and has published papers on personality, marital and family issues. In 1991 he founded Psychologists for a Free A.P.A. for the purpose of ending A.P.A. advocacy on social-moral issues.
"It will be recognized immediately that this title is an exaggeration. There are large numbers of psychologists, uncontaminated by doctrinaire politics, who continue to search for the basic processes which constitute our psychological lives. They also seek to determine the most effective interventions to change the activity of those processes to better the lives of others.
The title refers to organized psychology: the American Psychological Association. APA, like many groups involved in human service delivery, has been seized by political activists who have little regard for science or the democratic process. Since the seventies, the American Psychological Association has lobbied the government, filed court briefs, and engaged in and promoted boycotts on behalf of a host of social-moral causes. These causes have included ERA, unrestricted abortion (including abortion for children without parental notification and consent), sex and racial-ethnic discrimination, and homosexual politics.
Recently, homosexual politics have taken the forefront. APA council voted to threaten with boycotts states whose citizens passed APA disapproved laws regarding homosexuality. It has supported efforts to introduce programs into the public schools to reduce prejudice aimed at so-called "gay, lesbian and bisexual youth" or "prehomosexual" children. APA has refused military advertising in the APA Monitor because of the military's position regarding gays in the military. It has entered court to support Political Science homosexual parenting. Most recently, NARTH tasted the censors boot when the APA Monitor refused to print a notice of its meetings. The reason? "NARTH"s position on homosexuality is in direct conflict with APA's position on the issue, and is also in conflict with current research findings on sexual orientation" (Farberman, 1995). In short, APA has employed coercion to enforce its politics and restricted the flow of information so necessary for science to function objectively. Sadly, APA does all this with no scientific basis for predicting the effect on society of adopting APA's approved programs. It was because APA engaged in these grossly unscientific and partisan activities that Psychologists for a Free APA was organized. Free APA takes no position on any social-moral-political issue. Its major purpose is to stop the American Psychological Association from taking advocacy positions on those issues.
It is hoped that all sides of these issues are represented in the organization. We support:
- The publication and dissemination of scientific research for the purpose of the advancement of science and the understanding of social-psychological processes. The most appropriate vehicles for the professional dissemination of scientific research are the scientific-professional journals of the social sciences.
- The right of psychologists as individuals and as groups of individuals to advocate and promote any social-moral-political issues in which they believe. Such individuals and Political Science groups, however, should not speak for The American Psychological Association.
The fundamental concern is that psychologists present themselves as professionals who are scientists or at least who base their practice on their science. Science is an enterprise which requires openness and questioning. When a scientific organization takes up politics and advocates for one side of a scientific issue, it declares the theoretical and scientific dialogue closed. It smothers science. It assumes that it not only knows what is, but also how things should be.
The reality is that APA doesn't have the answers. In science there is always another question. Advocacy politics, on the other hand, require an assumption that truth has been found and therefore, it is time to spread it through the law, public policy, intimidation and propaganda.
In order to maintain the pretense of science, the American Psychological Association presents the results of research projects which support its politics. However, the limitations of the research are not emphasized which results in (a) overgeneralizing of data; (b) ignoring or misrepresenting research results contrary to its politics; and (c) using poorly conceived research to support its positions. To courts, legislatures, lay people, and professionals unschooled in research, this looks like science. This "appearance of science" approach to advocacy is evidenced in all the major areas for which APA has taken an advocacy stance. It tends to turn meanings upside down. For example, the statement "There is no evidence that...no longer means that we don't know, it now means that we should move ahead with what we are promoting.
A paper recently published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology ( Haldeman, 1994) was entitled "The Practice and Ethics of Sexual Orientation Conversion Therapy." In the abstract, the author states, "The literature in psychotherapeutic and religious conversion therapies is reviewed, showing no evidence indicating that such treatments are effective in their intended purpose." He also called for research on the potential harmful effects of such treatments. Note the scientific attitude. He did not call for research to determine if there was a potentially harmful effect. Or if therapy for this purpose is more harmful than therapy for other purposes. Essentially, the article serves to discredit efforts of therapists to help unhappy homosexuals to change their sexual orientation.
Assuming that Haldeman represents the current thinking of APA and homosexual advocates, it can be shown by using quotations from the writings of advocates, that APA, in it's advocacy for homosexual causes, has no scientific basis for doing so and is operating in the dark. This opinion is based on the following interrelated notions (1) there is no generally accepted scientific definition of homosexuality; (2) APA's efforts to gain protected minority status for homosexuals are not based on any scientific evidence that homosexuality is of the same order as, for example, sex and race; (3) there is no solid body of research based homosexuals; (4) there is evidence that conversion therapy works for some people called homosexual; and (5) there is no convincing evidence that efforts to provide conversion therapy should be considered unethical. I will address each of these points. In the quotations which follow the emphases are mine...
... So, APA without a definition to guide its activity is blindly trying to impose its will on society by attacking citizens who oppose its view. There is no scientific procedure which would enable APA to predict the future for such a fluid condition in a changing context...
APA and Homosexuality as a Protected Minority
The above quotations point to the second reason APA advocacy is political. On what basis does APA seek to have what it calls homosexuals declared a protected minority? There is no satisfactory scientific definition for the construct. The condition is variable and subject to change through a number of influences. Has any other group been granted this status under the same conditions? These laws have been previously applied to conditions (e.g., sex or race) which were clearly outside the control of the persons involved and were not changeable. Our quotations indicate that these conditions do not apply to homosexuals. With no science, and questionable legal grounds, APA's advocacy for homosexuals to attain the status of a protected minority is merely twisted, political activity.
Lack of Research
The problem of definition points to the third reason APA advocacy is politically motivated. APA asserts that its advocacy is driven by research (Tomes, H.,1993). Haldeman (1994) claims that "It is, ..., well within psychology's purview to disseminate accurate information from our considerable database about homosexuality" (p. 226). However, since there has been no adequate delineation of the construct and since the condition is variable, how could APA develop such a pool of scientific research? According to Gonsiorek (1991) "Research on homosexuality has been characterized by poor and biased sampling procedures and vague, erroneous, or simplistic assumptions about the definition of homosexuality" (p. 123). Is there a considerable database? The answer is embedded in criticisms of conversion research.
APA is opposed to conversion therapy...
The Ethics of Conversion
... Much of the argument for the abandonment of conversion therapy is based on the 1973 decision to remove homosexuality from the DSM, thus, according to Haldeman's (1994) quote from APA (1975), "...removing the stigma of mental illness that has long been associated with homosexual orientations." The major ethical arguments are contained in the following...
... It is debatable whether the 1973 decision should be considered evidence that homosexuality is "not an illness" or that it is normal. In the absence of lesions, chemical influences, parasites, bacteria, viruses, unequivocal genetic or brain anomalies, the decision as to what constitutes an illness is subject to the interpretation of existing research and personal opinion i.e., a political decision. It is decided by vote. This is the case with homosexuality. Gonsiorek (1991) concludes that "...the issue of whether homosexuality per se is a sign of psychopathology, psychological maladjustment, or disturbance has been answered, and the answer is that it not" (p. 135). However, the work he cites to support this position simply shows that homosexuals do not exhibit symptoms associated with other socially defined pathological conditions. Whatever may be the facts with regard to whether homosexuality is intrinsically pathological, large numbers of American citizens believe it to be undesirable and believe that its normalization would have deleterious effects...
It is clear that both APA's have ignored the absence of research on the potential social impact of the normalization of homosexuality. The American Psychological Association, which claims to be a scientific organization, is especially guilty because it has approved launching attacks on states in which its homosexual agenda has been thwarted...
In conclusion, using the words of homosexual advocates, it has been shown that there is no sound scientific basis for APA adopting its advocacy stance for homosexual politics. Furthermore, it has been shown that there is no scientific justification for attacks on therapists who attempt to help unhappy homosexuals try to change their sexual orientation. Without science, APA advocacy simply represents another prejudice.
APA is a very large, rich organization. In collaboration with other groups seeking radical social change, APA wields its power to impose its prejudice upon American citizens. The history of such collaborations are ominous. Whether the zealots joined wear brown shirts, pink triangles, or raise the clenched fist of radical feminism, when professional and scientific organizations embrace their cause, the scientific enterprise dies and is replaced by propaganda and coercion."

Since the 1973 decision by the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, few psychiatric or psychological journals focus on exploring the etiology of homosexuality. Today the view that homosexuality is inborn and immutable appears to be a working assumption for many mental health professionals and for most journalists who report on gay issues. Gay rights advocate and author Eric Marcus compares homosexuality to being lefthanded.
California's Project 10 is a compelling example of the extent to which the view of homosexuality as innate and immutable has won acceptance. Project 10 provides a way for high school students who may have a homosexual orientation to be channeled toward special gay counselors who can help them to accept and adjust to their sexual orientation. Project 10 is viewed as especially crucial because of the high rate of suicide among gay teenagers (one-third of all youth suicides). In the view of gay activists and numerous psychologists, many of these suicides result from the lack of proper institutional support to assist adolescent gays in accepting their homosexuality. It should be pointed out, however, that there is not unanimity on this subject. Critics maintain that such an approach further confuses adolescents about sexual orientation rather than assisting them.
POLITICS, NOT SCIENCE
It should be pointed out, however, that the growing advocacy for gay rights does not result from conclusive scientific breakthroughs in understanding the origin and nature of homosexuality. In fact, the organizing efforts of the gay rights movement beginning in 1969 serve as the real motor behind society's changing view of homosexuality. Through PACs and political lobbying organizations such as the Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the Human Rights Campaign Fund, gays and lesbians have become a political force to be reckoned with in mainstream American politics. HOMOSEXUALITY AND OBJECTIVITY
... It is clear that since 1969 the gay community has adopted a proactive strategy to bring homosexuality into the American mainstream, beginning with language itself. They are no longer "homosexual"; they are "gay." And those who oppose them are "homophobes."
Gays have also managed to put a lid on much of the research into the causes of homosexuality by the pressure they brought to bear on the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Beginning in 1970, gay activists initiated a very militant campaign focusing on the APA's annual convention. Through demonstrations inside the convention, they succeeded in disrupting the APA's proceedings on homosexuality .They accused the APA of using the same tactics against them that had been used against blacks. Over a three-year period their efforts bore fruit: In 1973, after much pressure, the APA's board of directors decided to remove homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
Strong pressure was exerted on psychiatrists to hold a referendum on the issue, and this took place in 1974. Prior to the referendum, the Gay Task Force helped the APA directors to draft a letter recommending the removal of homosexuality from the Diagnostic. The APA made its mailing list available to the Gay Task Force and provided them with APA stationery. Funds were raised inside the gay community to pay for the mailing. Nowhere did the mailing mention that it had been paid for by the Gay Task Force.
By a 58 to 40 percent vote, it was decided via the referendum that homosexuality would no longer be considered a mental disorder. Since that time, fewer and fewer studies examining the causes of homosexuality have been published, according to the January 1992 issue of the Journal of Counseling Psychology. Kronemeyer and others believe that privately many psychiatrists continue to view homosexuality as a form of psychosis but are reserved in articulating this view publicly.
Ruth Barnhouse, psychology professor at Loyola College in Maryland, points out that "most of the psychiatrists involved in making the decision were not specialists in homosexuality." She also notes that, although a special task force of psychiatrists was formed to make recommendations, their conclusions (expressing strong reservations toward the new APA position) were "essentially disregarded."
Perhaps most critical of the highly political nature of the 1973 decision is Ronald Bayer's Homosexuality and American Psychiatry--The Politics of Diagnosis, in which he recounts the political role played by the gay community in reversing the APA's position. Interestingly, Bayer saw this decision as both political and vulnerable. With the advent of the Reagan presidency, Bayer warned that the APA position on homosexuality was highly susceptible to being reversed:The homosexual movement rode the crest of social protest in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Now like the broader movement of which it was part, it encounters deep resistance to change. The recent era of major reform has come to an end in the United States. Under these circumstances the APA's 1973 decision is bound to become increasingly vulnerable.
Bayer went on to warn:
In removing homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, the Psychiatric Association symbolically deprived American society of its most important justification for refusing to grant legitimation to homosexuality. As the need for such a justification resurfaces in the current period, pressure will mount in psychiatrists to reclassify homosexuality as a disorder. Lacking theoretical orientation with which to protect itself from such pressure, psychiatry may find it exceedingly difficult to resist those demands.
Bayer's observations clearly suggest the APA did not have a theoretical but rather a political motivation for rescinding its former position on homosexuality..."
"... What do we know about this disorder? Well first, it is a disorder, despite the denials of the American Psychiatric Association. Great political pressure was exerted on this professional organization by gays and lesbians (some of whom are psychiatrists) to declare homosexuality to be "normal." The debate went on for years. "Raymond Sampson, Ph.D., a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology, was recently the target of a complaint filed with the Minnesota Board of Psychology as the result of a letter-to-the editor Dr. Sampson wrote for a local newspaper.
The complaint against Sampson was filed in November 2002 and was just recently resolved.
Dr. Sampson's legal saga began when he read an article in the March 18, 2002 edition of the Duluth News Tribune. It was entitled Therapy For Gays Continues Despite Social Enlightenment.
Written by Duluth psychologist Lisa Capell, the article contained the signatures of psychologist Chris Henley and assistant professor of psychology Paula Pederson attached in support.
The article described conversion therapy for homosexuals as unethical, barbaric, and misguided, and concluded with the statement, This type of treatment is from the era of lobotomy and straitjackets. It should not be tolerated! The article implicated NARTH as involved in such treatments.
Upset by the mischaracterization, Dr. Sampson wrote a response. Published in the letters-to-the-editors column, it was entitled Principled Disapproval of Gays Is Not Intolerance. He pointed out that the columns writers said reorientation therapy (what they called Christian therapy) of homosexuality is unethical, but, Sampson argued, the compassionate, principled disapproval of the homosexual condition does not constitute unfair discrimination or intolerance.
Making clear the historical fact that no culture or time has ever considered homosexuality to be normal, Dr. Sampson also referred to a statement published in the journal Psychological Reports that hundreds of people had reported positive change in their sexual orientation away from homosexuality.
A complaint was then filed against Dr. Sampson with the Minnesota Board of Psychology, although it did not list the name(s) of the complainer(s). The complaint charged that Dr. Sampson exhibited a biased attitude and provided false and misleading information to the public by submitting the enclosed opinion to a public news forum.
The complaint listed several allegations against Dr. Sampsons misleading statements, including:
The fact that Dr. Sampson had inadvertently referred to the peer-reviewed journal Psychological Reports as an American Psychological Journal Association-published journal. (Although it is in fact an independent journal, other, official publications of the APA have, in fact, recently published papers that show favorable outcomes for reorientation therapy and support its ethicality.)
The Psychological Reports article was supposedly misinterpreted by Dr. Sampson, based upon numbers of respondents to the survey in question, actual percentages of respondents according to their sexual orientations, etc. The allegation states that Sampson overgeneralized and mischaracterized the content journal article. (The allegations ignored the fact that Dr. Sampson was writing a letter-to-the-editor, not a comprehensive, point-by-point article detailing a particular study.)
NARTH's Vice President, Dr. Dean Byrd, assisted Dr. Sampson in organizing a legal defense.
''I believe that the most egregious 'overgeneralizing and mischaracterizing' actually occurred,'' Dr. Byrd said, ''when the authors of the original article stated that reorientation therapy offered to clients who seek it is 'barbaric and misguided.'
The Board also alleges that Sampson, in his article and later follow-up letters requested by the Board to clarify his statements, referred to homosexuality as a perversion and a condition. The Board claimed that his statements were misleading, incomplete, and lacking in factual foundation, owing to the removal of homosexuality as a mental illness from the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).
The allegation also cites the American Psychological Associations 1997 resolution stating that the Association does not regard homosexuality as a mental disorder. (Yet that same resolution also states that psychologists should respect the rights of others to hold values that differ from their own and they should not engage in discrimination based on sexual orientation. -- our italics).
''Clearly,'' Dr. Byrd countered, ''that same respect for diversity that the APA calls for, must also extend to people whose values preclude their living a gay lifestyle.''
As to the specific issues involved in the complaint, the Board stated that the matters to be decided were
Whether Dr. Sampson violated a statute, rule, or order that the Board issued or is empowered to enforce,
Engaged in unprofessional conduct which has the potential for causing harm to the public,
Violated the rules of conduct/code of ethics adopted by the Board, and
Made public statements that contained false or misleading information.
On April 15, 2003, Dr. Sampsons attorneys, Mohrman and Kaardal, P.A., sent a comprehensive response to the Minnesota Board of Psychology. Those attorneys rebutted the allegations made against Sampson; addressed the possible violation of the Boards rules; and also how this Boards investigation and continual prosecution of this matter is a violation of Reverend Sampsons First Amendment right to freedom of speech and freedom of religion and Fourteenth Amendment right to equal protection and due process. (Dr. Sampson is also an ordained deacon in the Catholic Church).
Dr. Sampson and his counsel then met with the Board of Psychology on April 25.
Less than one week later, Dr. Sampson was contacted by letter by the Minnesota Board of Psychology. They informed him that they had completed their review of the complaint filed against him and he was exonerated.
Their letter states that, After a thorough review of the Psychology Practice Act and the information you presented at the conference on April 25, 2003, the [Complaint Resolution] Committee determined that there was insufficient basis for the Board to take any further action on this matter. Our file was, therefore, closed.
The letter assures Dr. Sampson that the complaint, designated classified while active, and now private since the matter is closed, will not become part of his public licensure file. The letter is signed by Patricia M. LaBrocca, Regulations Analyst.
Because they believe the complaint should never have been filed or considered, Dr. Sampson and his legal counsel are currently considering legal action against the Minnesota Board of Psychology.
"This case is a textbook example of the politics of intimidation--how judicial boards are being influenced by activism instead of science,'' said Dean Byrd. ''We need to put the review boards on notice that we will not tolerate such abuses of power. When obviously spurious charges are filed, review boards should aggressively pursue those who filed the charges and reprimand them for having done so.''

The head of a national homosexual organization is vowing to politically "punish," "terrify" and "torture" activists who oppose his organization's agenda on "gay" rights which he says would give him "endless satisfaction."
Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force in Washington, D.C., made the comments in yesterday's edition of Between the Lines, a Detroit area homosexual newsmagazine, the American Family Association of Michigan points out.
In addition to declaring his desire for retribution against "local legislators and leaders" who oppose the homosexual agenda, Foreman expressed a goal beyond securing legal same-sex marriage, that is gaining other means besides marriage by which homosexuals could access public and private financial benefits.
Foreman told the interviewer of his plans to go after his opponents.
"I'm interested in going after, politically, local legislators and leaders that have launched these anti-gay initiatives," he explained. "'We beat you, now we're gonna go back and we're going to affirmatively punish you' people who launch this stuff, so that they understand not only that they're not going to win, but that there are consequences to it.
"We would set up a [political action committee] and go in and terrify them with a credible challenge. ... So we go in, for a modest investment of money and torture these people, which would give me endless satisfaction. And the word would go out very quickly, 'You know what, this really isn't worth it.'"
Foreman was asked: "Is getting the right to marriage for same-sex couples something the Task Force is interested in?"
He responded: "We want full equality under the law, which, right now, means the freedom to marry. But we're also hopeful that we create different ways in which people can form relationships and families that don't come with all the baggage and the downsides of marriage. One of the great things about where we're going is that we are creating new ways for people to relate, new ways for people to obtain rights and benefits."
According to Between the Lines, Foreman is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the annual Triangle Foundation Dinner on May 2 in Detroit.

Gays ultimately need to stop looking to government for unconditional love and approval of who we are. Andrew Sullivan, a political commentator and writer many of you know and respect, wrote a piece for Time magazine where he actually equated governmental recognition of gay marriage as a necessary element to all gay people feeling accepted and wanted. He claimed that anything other than marriage will build a wall between gay people and their own families.
While his story was personal and moving, the argument was, frankly, nonsense, and representative of the general mentality among the gay elite. It also gives the government and other peoples opinions far too much power over the quality of our lives and effectively eliminates our own responsibility for our happiness.
Part of the fight for gay marriage is based in Sullivans lamentthat it is only governmental recognition of who are that will make us whole. Lets get realthe only thing that will make gay people whole is personal acceptance of ourselves by ourselves. Instead, we are still looking to Mommy or Daddy, now in the form of Society, to tell us were okay to sanctify, if you will, our lives and relationships.
Society has been the benevolent parent for a very long time. And it has been amazing, and a testament to the American character, that despite being a people of faith who have legitimate concerns about the gay lifestyle, Americans have made this the best place on Earth for gays and lesbians, where we are free to live incomparably rich lives.
Now, when Americans have said through polls and voting, that they do not want to give up the meaning of marriage but support a comparable alternative, how do the gay elite respond? When you ask for one cultural thing to be left untouched, the Gay Elite become the Gay Gestapo.

Myth: Research shows that there is a "gay gene." Homosexuality is genetic.
Reality: Homosexuality is not a genetically encoded condition. Contrary to media hype, there is no conclusive or compelling empirical evidence showing any absolute biological, genetic, or hormonal causation for homosexuality. Homosexual activist and molecular biologist Dean Hamers study claiming the existence of a homosexual gene has been scientifically discredited. Studies that claim to prove homosexuality is genetic have been purposefully designed from a homosexual advocacy perspective and seek to convince society that homosexuality is innate, psychologically normal, and thus socially desirable.
There may be a possibility of the existence of a genetic predisposition toward homosexuality, which is far different from causation. But even this possibility is far from scientifically proven. Predisposition toward something does not mean that it is inevitable, or that such a predisposition cannot or should not be resisted and overcome. Some people may have a predisposition to alcoholism, yet we do not affirm their disposition, but rather treat their condition and help them change. Current evidence suggests that environmental, familial, and personal influences contribute significantly to the development of homosexual tendencies. Seventy years of therapeutic counseling and case studies show a remarkable consistency concerning the origins of the homosexual impulse as an uncompleted gender identity seeking after its own sex to replace what was not fully developed in childhood. Although individuals who experience homosexual attractions and thoughts may not have chosen these tendencies, they do have a choice as to whether or not they will act on the feelings. It is the acting on these feelings that constitutes homosexuality. Myth: The mental and emotional problems that homosexuals experience are due to the straight communitys persecution and intolerance of their lifestyle.
Reality: If this were true, then one would expect to find lower rates of suicide and mental illness among homosexuals in areas where homosexuality has been mainstreamed and widely accepted for decades (i.e., San Francisco, European countries, particularly the Netherlands). However, research shows that there is no reduction in the rates of suicide, mental illness, substance abuse, alcoholism, and homosexual domestic violence in areas where homosexuality is more widely accepted. High rates of emotional trauma in homosexuals are not induced by society but rather are the result of deviant behavior that assaults the emotional and physical health, of those who engage in homosexual sex. Myth: Schools are not a safe place for homosexual students. This problem should be specifically addressed in school curriculum, clubs, and safe-school policies and programs.
Reality: Public schools must be safe for every child, without differentiation. Most schools already have policies prohibiting harassment of every kind. Many children suffer from the same kind of harassment purportedly directed exclusively at homosexual students, including children who are overweight, undersized, timid, suffering from acne, or who belong to ethnic minorities. Anti-harassment policies should cover all students, in all circumstances, equally, and not provide special protection for specific groups.
Federal crime rate statistics (www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm) reported a total of 140 incidents of hate crimes based on sexual orientation within U.S. schools and colleges during the year 2000. The nation has roughly 55 million students. The incidence rate of 140 crimes based on sexual orientation relative to 55 million students is 0.00003 percent, or three in 100,000.
Pro-homosexual organizations such as Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN), and the National Education Association (NEA) see safe school policies as an opportunity to establish clubs and develop curriculum that will indoctrinate student populations toward pro-homosexual advocacy. These organizations use the "safe school" notion as a Trojan horse. Once sexual orientation is established as an issue of safety rather than of sexual behavior, activists demand the entire fabric of public instruction be modified to promote, validate, and even celebrate risky sexual practices and lifestyles that are unacceptable to the majority of students and their families. "Evelyn Hooker has been among the most influential figures in the highly successful movement to convince the American people that homosexuality is a "normal variant" of human sexual behavior. Her 1957 study, "The Adjustment of the Male Overt Homosexual" (Journal of Projective Techniques, 1957, 21, 18-31) is the most frequently cited scientific source for the argument that homosexuality is not a pathology, that homosexuals are as free from mental disorder as heterosexuals.
Such assertions have not only found their way into standard psychology textbooks but have also provided a scientific basis for decisions in major court cases involving the legality of state sodomy laws and prohibitions against homosexual employment in certain state and local agencies (e.g., schools, police departments). Indeed, when the American Psychiatric Association debated the issue of homosexuality in 1973, Evelyn Hooker's work was Exhibit A for those who wanted to remove homosexuality from the group's list of mental disorders.
For many commentators and activists, the Hooker study effectively ended the debate over whether or not homosexuals were in any way abnormal in their relationships with each other and with the community at large. Today many Americans have accepted the idea that homosexuality is "normal" and "healthy" without realizing that such an opinion is derived in large measure from a single study -- one conducted by a UCLA professor whose previous laboratory subjects had been rats...
This unquestioning acceptance of "authorities" on the basis of professional reputation or political correctness threatens the integrity of our legal system. Judges must take greater responsibility for assessing the soundness and accuracy of testimony by so-called experts; yet, paradoxically, such a task is manifestly beyond the competence of the court. This dilemma is the consequence of the politicizing of the scientific community over the past several decades, particularly in questions of sexuality. The recent exposure of Kinsey's errors indicates just how long researchers have been careless or deliberately misleading in approaching sexual questions. And the widespread acclamation of recent, flawed studies "proving" that homosexuality is inherited genetically is evidence that the problem has only worsened over the years."
