Barack’s Socialist Mop.  ...do they really want to use this metaphor? Have they no fear whatsoever that it could backfire on them? In order to have no such fear, of course, you have to buy in to the underlying worldview — that this entire mess really is the exclusive responsibility of those evil Rethuglikkkans who ran the country for the past eight years. You have to willfully deny the reality that the Congress was run by Democrats for the last two of those years.

The Florida solar panel plant cost $150 million to build.
Solar Power Plant
(AP)
A field of orange trees makes more sense.

The state of Florida is completing the final touches on a solar panel plant that cost $150 million to build and will only power 3,000 homes.
Barack Obama will visit this solar-paneled cash dump next week.
The AP reported:

The Desoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center will power a small fraction of Florida Power & Light’s 4-million plus customer base; nevertheless, at 25 megawatts, it will generate nearly twice as much energy as the second-largest photovoltaic facility in the U.S.

The White House said President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit the facility Tuesday, when it officially goes online and begins producing power for the electric grid…

…The Desoto facility and two other solar projects Florida Power & Light is spearheading will generate 110 megawatts of power, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by more than 3.5 million tons. Combined, that’s the equivalent of taking 25,000 cars off the road each year, according to figures cited by the company.

The investment isn’t cheap: The Desoto project cost $150 million to build and the power it supplies to some 3,000 homes and businesses will represent just a sliver of the 4 million-plus accounts served by the state’s largest electric utility.

But there are some economic benefits: It created 400 jobs for draftsmen, carpenters and others whose work dried up as the southwest Florida housing boom came to a closure and the recession set in. Once running, it will require few full-time employees.

The plant cost $150 million to build and will power 3,000 homes or businesses.
In other words it costs about $50,000 per household.
No wonder these government-funded projects can’t make it on their own.
Sounds like an investment only a democrat (and Lindsey Graham) would love.

The cost of a nuclar plant of the normal type is in the billions of dollars.

However, work is being done on “miniature” nuclear generators which only need about one acre of ground, last about 20 years (and can then be refueled or replaced easily and inexpensively) and only cost about $12-$15million each. They’re powerful enough to provide electricity for a few thousand homes and businesses; and come very close to the old promise of nuclear power being “too cheap to meter”.

Some of the plants are already in use in Japan and France (France gets about 65%-75% of its electricity from nuclear plants. They’re way ahead of us in that way.)

Of course, the little greenies will fight having anything like that in this country.

Two stories are unfolding out in the 23rd Congressional District of New York. In the foreground, we have the three-way contest between hapless Republican Dede Scozzafava, upstart Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, and some generic Democrat whose name no one can remember. This race is a microcosm of our strange politics, which have become like a speeding car with jammed door locks, cut brake lines, a dead steering wheel, and air vents that pump nitrous oxide. Everyone is dimly aware the country is heading for the edge of a cliff, but no one can muster the energy to search for alternatives.

Leave her alone!

I, for one, was glad to hear that the surgery to remove the skin cancer tumor from First Lady Laura Bush's right shin in early November was successful.

My relief seems not to have been shared by female members of the White House press corps, who tried to instigate a David Gregory-style swarm and imitate their male WH press corps counterparts' VP Cheney accidental shooting feeding frenzy. They are justifying their attacks on the grounds that somehow Mrs. Bush is obligated to become a public crusader for whatever ailments she suffers. Never mind that this is the same press corps that mocks the First Lady any time she expresses an opinion on health matters or any other policy matter.

You can watch the mob on the White House website, but reprinting the transcript really reveals how thoroughly pathetic and idiotic the self-parodying WH press corps has become.

From the transcript: But the women wolf pack was not done:The insanity is being stoked at the New York Times, which is suffering full-blown Laura Bush Derangement Syndrome, and in the hyperventilating British press. These people need serious help.

Gates of Vienna has a good article up:

I also found this link in the comments.

Sarah Palin Strikes Back. “With her decision to endorse Doug Hoffman, the conservative (not Republican) candidate, Sarah Palin sends the Republican Party a very clear message.”

Obama declares swine flu a national emergency.

But Mickey Kaus wonders if it’s all trumped-up. I think, though, that the reason they’re not bothering to distinguish between H1N1 and seasonal flu is that at the moment, there isn’t really any seasonal flu yet. If it’s flu, it’s swine flu.

UPDATE: Swine flu cases overestimated?

And more skepticism from Michael Fumento. Plus, several readers think this is a case of Rahm “never let a crisis go to waste” Emanuel at work — declare a health crisis and it makes national health care look somehow more urgent. But while I discount the “Swine Flu Vaccine Is Obama’s Katrina” talk, their handling so far isn’t something I’d put forward as an actual argument for more government involvement in health-care delivery.

More here, including the full text of Obama’s order.

Obama’s socialist SEIU pals lash out at the Chamber of Commerce–
In this video– Andy Stern tells SEIU socialists at a rally across from the Chamber of Commerce that the free enterprise group believes in:

“Old market-worshipping, privatizing, deregulating trickle down economy that took the greatest economy on the earth and sent it staggering forward… I say shame on them… We don’t approve and we have a friend in the White House who doesn’t improve as well.”

From a SEIU rally at the Chamber earlier this year:

Naked Emporer News, via FOX Nation
Andy Stern — SEIU President: “People at the Chamber of Commerce have ruined the country.”

Related… After the recent attacks by the Obama White House on the Chamber of Commerce, the organization that speaks out in support of American business, the president of the Chamber of Commerce stood by his defense of free enterprise today in The Wall Street Journal. It is a worthwhile read. The White House’s war on the Chamber has come just as the group is launching a new $100 million campaign promoting free enterprise. This, of course, threatens the plans of the Obama White House.

Classy as always…
Michigan’s Governor Jennifer Granholm is the latest democrat to mainstream obscenity. Granholm defended her tax increase proposals by smearing the conservative “teabaggers” who oppose her.
The Blog Prof reported this from Detroit News:

Granholm says Bishop and his Republican colleagues, who oppose any government revenue increase because they view it as a tax hike, are “bowing at the altar of the teabaggers.”

Michigan unemployment remains the highest in the country at 15.3 percent.

Crap & Tax abortion "compromise" sweetened with support for nukes

—Purple Avenger

Naturally, all the usual suspects on the Republican side (i.e. McPain, Lindsey "doormat" Graham, and the rest of the compromise cabal) are involved in this betrayal.

Its foolishness to be trading away good ideas for terrible ones. More fission nuclear reactors are a good medium term idea to bridge to the future. Continuing work to get self-sustaining fusion reactors, or Thorium reactor working is a sustainable long term endgame that solves virtually all the negative aspects of current uranium/plutonium cycle fission systems.

A sh#t sandwich, even with bacon, is still fundamentally a sh#t sandwich.

144 This is utter crap if Republican's think they'll get nuclear power out of this.  I'm sure they'll build the new reactors right after they get done building the fence on the border (that was promised too).

A TRIBUTE TO THE FOURNIERS

When Mark Fournier told us almost a decade ago that one day the government would try to shut down Free Dominion and stifle our voices, we thought he was a bit paranoid.

When Mark insisted on hosting Free Dominion on an American server we felt we should humour him.

The day has come - the day that Mark Fournier predicted seven years ago when he and Connie put Free Dominion on an American server to make life more difficult for the government agency he was sure would eventually move to shut down his conservative web site.

Around the turn of the century, and millennium, Mark Fournier from Edmonton, Alberta had a dream. He felt that there was insufficient political dialogue in Canada, and that the MSM stifled open discourse and criticism of our governments and their policies. Mark felt that in particular, conservative views and commentary lacked any real outlet.

Mark spent two years posting at Free Republic, an American conservative political web site, and paid particular attention to how the website was run and why it was so successful. He felt that he could apply what he had learned by creating a Canadian version of Free Republic, and with some luck and effort, create a place for Canadian conservatives to gather to share views, debate issues, teach and learn from one another. The site might eventually become influential in political circles if he could attract enough people to participate in freewheeling political discussion.

While at Free Republic, Mark happened across Connie Wilkins, a lady who shared his political principles, and who had the computer and web site skills Mark lacked. They colluded to bring Free Dominion into being. When EdS came up with the name ‘Free Dominion’ Mark recognized it as a winner and he and Connie set about branding it as the place to go for principled conservatism.

From the outset, Mark understood that he was shaking up a cosy relationship between politicians and the mainstream media. He was also giving voice to a political group that had been effectively stifled for decades. He expected that eventually political strategists would move to stifle his web site and shut down unfettered political debate.

While Mark and Connie struggled to bring Free Dominion into existence, they kept their site on American servers in part to avoid loss of their dream if our government should move against them as they anticipated. From the outset, the freedom of expression and the need to bolster democracy with open dialogue and unfettered debate were driving forces behind the formation of Free Dominion.

For the same reason that they used American servers, Mark and Connie have refused to align themselves with any political party or movement. While it seems strange that a conservative web site would not endorse conservative political parties, there is more to conservatism than adopting a name. It was important that Free Dominion members be allowed to freely criticize their representatives. Free Dominion remains a conservative grass roots site today and it is the largest and most widely read political forum in Canada.

Political parties, including conservative parties claim to be grass-roots and to listen to their members, but the reality is that member voices are quickly lost in practice. Free Dominion gives principled conservatives a voice that is heard.

Free Dominion has remained a bastion of free speech for years, and it is with great reluctance that Mark and Connie have banished belligerents, trolls and those who refuse to adhere to site rules and objectives. Without the occasional purging of those intent on disruption, the forums would sink into oblivion.

Members who criticize Free Dominion, its web site, operations and format forget that for the initial few years Mark and Connie carried the entire cost of operating Free Dominion. They used up cash on hand, their savings, all of their credit and came close to personal bankruptcy without ever once complaining or letting anyone know how dire their situation was. They still contribute thousands of hours and every penny they can lay their hand on to fighting to keep their dream alive, to promote conservatism and to fight for our freedom of speech, unedited and uncensored by politically correct bureaucrats.

We have done fund raising for Free Dominion with limited success. We have managed to keep the servers running and improvements made to the site format. However, when our government came knocking costs soared as we had to undertake a legal defence and costs thereof. Mark and Connie chose to sell Free Dominion to a Panamanian organization to keep Free Dominion and our members safe from our government.

HRCs that target an Internet web site routinely demand access to all of the data on the web site servers. That data includes all of our sign up information and other relevant information that would allow an HRC to track individual posters. The Fourniers have carefully protected our identities for all of the time that Free Dominion has been in operation and continued protection of our members was the major factor in the decision to sell Free Dominion. The sale has protected our butts from potential HRC harassment.

When you see odd additions to the Free Dominion forums, it is because we are trying various schemes to add a revenue stream through advertising to offset some of the site operational costs. Constructive criticism is always welcome, but rude posts are just that – unjustified rudeness. Site features may come and go, but bear in mind the objective is to help pay the bills.

Mark and Connie have done their best to protect this site and most importantly to protect the anonymity of Free Dominion members – even those ungrateful users of the free speech they have fought so hard to protect.

When THE CHRC announced it was investigating a complaint against Free Dominion and Mark and Connie made it very clear the CHRC was in for a fight to the finish, Richard Warman was unable to entice the CHRC to attack Free Dominion again. Undaunted, Warman filed libel actions instead, trying to financially hurt the Fourniers and close down Free Dominion through economic pressure.

Mark and Connie have been able to protect the Free Dominion web site and protect Free Dominion member anonymity. They have not been able to protect themselves, however, and are defendants in at least two actions by self-proclaimed Nazi hunter and human rights activist Richard Warman. His is, in my opinion, an egotistical snot trying vainly to establish a reputation as a defender of political correctness and champion of offensive, thin-skinned snivellers who are themselves easily offended.

If we value our freedom of expression, if we believe that Mark and Connie should not be subjected to frivolous and vexatious legal actions for providing us with a venue in which to speak our minds, we have to get off our haunches and contribute to their defence fund. Until they can get Warman into court and expose his actions, all of us live with the threat of having the CHRC knock on our door, accusing us of hate speech and ready, willing and able to railroad us through a kangaroo court and destroy us financially without the benefit of due process or an opportunity to defend ourselves.

If you value your freedoms, join in this battle. Click on the donate button and send along whatever you can afford. We cannot watch Mark and Connie fight this travesty alone. Mark and Connie are true leaders with principles worthy of support. We cannot allow our freedoms to be taken from us without a fight.

Thank you.

ONSTAR IS WATCHING YOU: “On its way to doing the 1/4-mile in 11.07 seconds at 128 mph, a Hennessy-tuned 700-horsepower Cadillac CTS-V hit .99 longitudinal G as it left the start line. By the end of the run the phone inside the car was ringing, and it was your friendly neighborhood OnStar representative wondering ‘What the hell do you think you’re doing?’ Ok, not quite… but they did have some questions.” So is this comforting or disturbing?

NOT SEEING A STORY HERE: Various people are emailing me saying “Obama declared a national emergency over swine flu, but his own daughters aren’t being vaccinated!” But if you read the story, you get this:

The Centers for Disease Control recommend that children ages 6 months through 18 years of age receive a vaccination against the H1N1 flu virus. At this time only children with chronic medical conditions are receiving the vaccination because their immune system is not strong enough to fight off the strain.

So they’re not getting the vaccine because there’s a shortage, and they don’t fit the triage guidelines. Seems to me that’s just how it ought to be. It would be a bigger scandal if they’d been jumped ahead of the line.

UPDATE: On the other hand, this photo, from the huge shot-line in Milwaukee, is pretty funny. (Via Gateway Pundit). More on long lines here. And some related thoughts from Mark Tapscott. “President Obama’s late-night declaration of a nationwide public health emergency last night shouldn’t be allowed to obscure the most important lesson of the developing swine flu crisis – The same government that only weeks ago promised abundant supplies of swine flu vaccine by mid-October will be running your health care system under Obamacare.” But note the discussion here.

Democrats are quick to accuse the evil health insurance industry of massive profits. …But insurance companies ranked only 35th on the list of most profitable American industries in 2009.
In fact, the members of Congress enjoyed a better raise than the insurance companies this year.
pelosi raise
The AP reported, via Free Republic:

Quick quiz: What do these enterprises have in common? Farm and construction machinery, Tupperware, the railroads, Hershey sweets, Yum food brands and Yahoo? Answer: They’re all more profitable than the health insurance industry.

In the health care debate, Democrats and their allies have gone after insurance companies as rapacious profiteers making “immoral” and “obscene” returns while “the bodies pile up.”

Ledgers tell a different reality. Health insurance profit margins typically run about 6 percent, give or take a point or two. That’s anemic compared with other forms of insurance and a broad array of industries, even some beleaguered ones.

Profits barely exceeded 2 percent of revenues in the latest annual measure. This partly explains why the credit ratings of some of the largest insurers were downgraded to negative from stable heading into this year, as investors were warned of a stagnant if not shrinking market for private plans.

Insurers are an expedient target for leaders who want a government-run plan in the marketplace. Such a public option would force private insurers to trim profits and restrain premiums to compete, the argument goes. This would “keep insurance companies honest,” says President Barack Obama.

The debate is loaded with intimations that insurers are less than straight, when they are not flatly accused of malfeasance.

They may not have helped their case by commissioning a report that looked primarily at the elements of health care legislation that might drive consumer costs up while ignoring elements aimed at bringing costs down. Few in the debate seem interested in a true balance sheet…

Health insurers posted a 2.2 percent profit margin last year, placing them 35th on the Fortune 500 list of top industries. As is typical, other health sectors did much better – drugs and medical products and services were both in the top 10.

More… This year, during the worst recession since the Great Depression, the average member of Congress will realize a 2.8 percent raise.
That means their profit margin is larger than the insurance companies they are demonizing.

One Flu Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

“I’ll believe it’s a crisis when the people telling me it’s a crisis start acting like it’s a crisis.”–Glenn Reynolds

Fox News, Fair and Balanced:

President Obama signed a proclamation declaring the H1N1 influenza a national emergency, giving doctors and medical facilities greater leeway in responding to the flu pandemic.

“National Emergency”? Baloney. They sure don’t act like it.

“Socialized Medicine”? We’ve already got it with vaccines. And that’s why there’s a shortage.

Nurse Bloomberg:

Swine flu vaccine supplies in the U.S. are being hindered by production delays at two drugmakers, and GlaxoSmithKline Plc’s failure to gain regulatory approval for its product, a government official said. …

Besides Glaxo and AstraZeneca Plc, both based in London, Sanofi-Aventis SA of Paris, Novartis AG in Basel, Switzerland, and CSL Ltd. of Melbourne provide the bulk of the U.S. supply. …

Novartis Chief Executive Officer Daniel Vasella, in an interview on CNBC yesterday, said that most of his company’s vaccine may not reach the U.S. until the first quarter of 2010. The Swiss company is the largest supplier to the U.S. …

“The utility of the vaccine will be much less at that point,” said William Schaffner, chairman of the department of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. “The virus will have gotten to most places before the vaccine” based on how rapidly it is now spreading in most of the country. …

One “positive surprise” for public health officials was getting a larger than expected delivery of the nasal spray version of the vaccine, made by AstraZeneca’s MedImmune Inc. unit in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Lurie said.

Yes, there have been technical issues. But we’ve driven most of the American companies out of the vaccine business.

Hoover’s Dr. Henry I. Miller from 2005:

Why can’t a country that developed the atomic bomb (60 years ago) and the polio vaccine (50 years ago) and put a man on the moon (almost 40 years ago) now produce an appropriate vaccine?

The reason is that flawed public policy from the Congress and the government’s Executive Branch has ensured low return on investment and high exposure to legal liability for vaccines. The predictable result: U.S. vaccine R&D and production have been decimated.

What kinds of policies? The Vaccines for Children Program, for example, was a do-gooder innovation of the Clinton administration (Hillary’s toe in the water for national health care, apparently) that disrupted market forces and dealt a blow to vaccine producers. Established in 1994, it created a single-buyer system for children’s vaccines, making the government by far the largest purchaser of childhood vaccines — at a mandated discount of 50 percent. Try extorting that kind of discount from manufacturers of trucks for the U.S. Postal Service or of Meals-Ready-to-Eat (MREs) for the Department of Defense, and see how long the companies bid on government contracts.

Memo to Senator Clinton: It doesn’t take a village, just good old American ingenuity combined with the expectation of a decent return on investment.

Arbitrary and excessive regulation is another obstacle. The highly risk-averse FDA has been especially tough on vaccines. The agency has rejected evidence of safety and efficacy from European and Canadian vaccine approvals; prematurely withdrawn life-saving products from the market because of mere perceptions of risk; and set the bar for the testing of new vaccines almost impossibly high.

As a result of our disastrous public policy, innovation has suffered and vaccine producers have abandoned the field in droves, leaving only four major American manufacturers and a few dozen products. As of the last flu season, there were only two producers of injectable flu vaccine for the U.S. market, for example, both using antiquated technology.

And we wonder why there are shortages.

This is just a taste what’s in store if we let government take over all health care.

“Registered by the State, for the State and to the State, so that Democrat Rule shall not Perish from the Earth.”

INTERNATIONAL VOTE HARVESTERS

While ex-ACORN employee B. Hussein Obama is whining about stolen elections in Afghanistan as an excuse for his dithering, Democrats are planning to steal even more elections in America.

The plan is to slam a “universal voter registration” bill through Congress before the next election, warned John Fund on C-SPAN this weekend, and in his new book.

Universal registration would register people who don’t want to be registered so their votes could be harvested by Democrat political machines.

Every existing list of people would be registered. Rahm’s Census. Library cards. Tax rolls. Welfare rolls. Drivers licenses. Patients. Customers. Mailing lists. ACORN lists. Santa Claus’s list of naughty and nice kids. If you own property in more than one place, you’re registered in both. If you moved several times, you are registered at all your addresses. If you are a foreign national here legally or illegally, on any list, you’re registered. Same with felons. Are you a foreigner who illegally contributed to Obama’s campaign last year? On the list! Dead? How can you be dead…you’re on the list!

This would doubtless be accompanied by the abolition of ID requirements.

Even Jimmy Carter supports voter ID laws. Know why? His first election was stolen by Democrats!

Fund at Politico last year:

…ACORN had hired 59 inmates from a work-release program at a nearby prison and…some inmates who had been convicted of identity theft had been made supervisors. That led some local wags to joke that at least ACORN was hiring specialists to do their work.

ACORN’s second line of defense has been that fraudulent registrations can’t turn into fraudulent votes, as if the felony of polluting voter lists was somehow not all that serious. But that defense goes only a short distance. “How would you know if people using fake names had cast votes in states without strict ID laws?” says GOP Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita, who this year won a major Supreme Court case upholding his state’s photo identification law. “It’s almost impossible to detect and once the fraudulent voter leaves the precinct or casts an absentee ballot, that vote is thrown in with other secret ballots there’s no way to trace it.”

Anita MonCrief, an ACORN whistle-blower who worked for both it and its Project Vote registration affiliate from 2005 until early this year, agrees. “It’s ludicrous to say that fake registrations can’t become fraudulent votes,” she told me. “I assure you that if you can get them on the rolls you can get them to vote, especially using absentee ballots.” [...]

[T]here are two civil rights in play here. One is the right to cast a ballot without fear or intimidation or artificial barriers. We fought a great struggle in the 1960s to eliminate poll taxes, literacy tests and pass a Voting Rights Act to protect the right to vote.

But all Americans have another civil right — the right not to have their ballot canceled out by someone who shouldn’t be voting, is voting twice or may not even exist. You can be just as surely disenfranchised by someone canceling out your vote as if someone blocked your entry into a courthouse door where a polling place was located.

Via QandO:

One such group might have been the St. Tammany Parish Fire District No. 3, which applied for a $120,000 grant to purchase smoke alarms for low-income families after a January fire killed four children in a home that had no working detectors.

“We wanted to buy smoke detectors to spread to homes all over the community to prevent that from happening again,” Chief Charles Flynn said in an interview Tuesday.

“I have no problem with not getting a grant, I’ve lost grants before,” said Chief Flynn, one of the fire officials who complained to Mr. Vitter in a letter.

“My issue is ACORN in New Orleans. Their mission statement says nothing about fire safety or fire prevention. It bothered me that ACORN got $1 million and there are so many smaller and bigger departments that have a need for that money.”

The Monroe Fire Department was the only squad in Louisiana to receive a grant and will be awarded $192,000. The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office will receive $62,000.

ACORN received $997,402, slightly less than the maximum allowable grant of $1 million.

Inquiries about the Constitutionality of Mandated Purchase of Heath Insurance were dismissed as “not serious”. But Congressmen were quick to call cutting off funds to ACORN “unconstitutional”. “Once your on the tit, you’re on it forever!”–James Madison

And have you noticed how every Obama Payoff Bill comes in at two dollars and 83 cents less than a billion or a trillion?

That “ban” on ACORN funding? It expires in a week.

Obama and Clinton cede to UN small arms treaty

THOUSANDS TURN OUT for Tea Party rally in San Diego.
To those in the media or on the political Left who keep insisting the tea party movement is dead, or its astroturf, etc... well the people of San Diego have turned out and spoken a message loud and clear: WE WANT OUR COUNTRY BACK!

IRATE AND INDEPENDENT: “A poll of opinion polls shows Americans’ attitudes are changing rapidly.”

Americans are simply fed up:

• A CNN poll last week suggests most no longer agree with Obama "on the issues that matter most to them."

• A Rasmussen poll shows 31 percent "think Congress has a poor understanding of the health care proposal," down four points from August (not a high point for Congress, if you recall town hall meetings). Worse, only 18 percent "think the (health care) plan will be a bipartisan effort."

• Another Rasmussen poll shows only 49 percent "think that the economy will be stronger in five years than it is today." • A new Gallup poll shows most are "very concerned" about the economy and 60 percent "think the economic conditions are getting worse."

Adding to these fears is Iran, which "9 in 10 Americans" think is developing nuclear arms, according to CNN.

And few seem to understand the president's unwillingness to make a decision about Afghanistan. It is as if they ask: "Does he ever actually sit at the Oval Office desk to work -- like the rest of us?"

The substance of that message is that they have a magic money tree to go to so do not worry.

A body language expert would have a field day with this Obamabot.

What is most disturbing, is just 25 seconds in, she says, "....all deposits are safe...." as she is shaking her head, side to side, universally meaning NO. Maybe it's just habit, but, anything she says beyond that is just the TOTUS with a female face...

Foul Beasts, Enemies Of The People's Republic, BEWARE

Ah, by the time the US Chamber of Commerce is on your enemies list, you need to back away from the Koolaid. Some Democrats have felt driven to take a stand:
“It’s a mistake,” said Rep. Jason Altmire, a moderate Democrat from western Pennsylvania. “I think it’s beneath the White House to get into a tit for tat with news organizations.”

Altmire was talking about the Obama administration’s efforts to undercut Fox News. But he said his remarks applied just the same to White House efforts to marginalize the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a powerful business lobby targeted for its opposition to climate change legislation.
Hey, who hired the Episcopalian unification strategist for White House communications? Is anybody really thinking up there? At a time when Americans want jobs, and then some more jobs, and then maybe some better-paid jobs, wouldn't it be wise not to be throwing political garlic at the US Chamber of Commerce?

Is this Chavez-like? When do the grocery stores get confiscated?

The Shrink seems a bit concerned:
On the other hand, if their behavior reflects the character of the President and those around him (and the evidence unfortunately points in that direction at the moment) here is considerable cause for worry. In such a case, Obama's poorly contained anger can lead him to make errors of judgement which are consequential. Further, those who cannot tolerate criticism cannot learn from their mistakes. They believe that all criticism is based on a personal repudiation and animus and as a result, never hear the content of the criticism. As a result those who criticize them become enemies who must be crushed in order to remove the stain on their escutcheon.
This is just kid stuff, but it is worrisome. IMO, this is related to the ridiculous claims of racism that were earlier leveled at critics. It's a sign of weakness and childishness, but at least almost all of that was coming from outside the White House.

And to think I worried about Hillary Clinton's Nixonian characteristics. If there are any adults in the White House, they need to throw the Che-T-Shirt crowd out and get some people with maturity in. Quickly.

But maybe this is a case of Obama not wanting to hear the "no" word. I laughed at Paglia for her mental dissonance in condemning the President's advisors while professing unmitigated support of the President, so I don't feel justified in just attributing this nonsense to the advisors. He chose them. He can dismiss them, if he doesn't agree with them. He probably does.

The real problem is that nobody is happy at the prospect of a health reform bill that doesn't really do anything to help for four years but does raise costs, and probably will make things even worse after four years. The more clued-in Dems are very worried about this proposal and about costs involved in cap and trade. For good reason. When push comes to shove, the White House won't be able to declare the Dems Public Enemy Number One, so they need to stop this ASAP and sit down and talk with those with whom they disagree.

Oh, and I think this policy comes from the very highest levels of this administration, because Obama seems to be pushing it:
Speaking privately at the White House on Monday with a group of mostly liberal columnists and commentators, including Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann of MSNBC and Maureen Dowd, Frank Rich and Bob Herbert of The New York Times, Mr. Obama himself gave vent to sentiments about the network, according to people briefed on the conversation.

Then, in an interview with NBC News on Wednesday, the president went public. “What our advisers have simply said is that we are going to take media as it comes,” he said. “And if media is operating, basically, as a talk radio format, then that’s one thing. And if it’s operating as a news outlet, then that’s another.”
Quite naturally, other news organizations are becoming concerned. None of them probably believe they can get through the next three years without publishing something critical of this administration's policies, and no individual reporter wants to have his or her beat threatened for writing what the White House considers unfair criticism.

Krauthammer. Politico.

And the ironical aspects are stunning; this is a president bound and determined to talk to dictators around the world, but bent on not talking to critics?

Folks, we’re addressing this as if it were just Newt’s position. The truth is, this is the position of the Republican leaders both national and at the state level.

We now know why the Republican party did nothing when it was the majority party in Congress. It believed in most of the stuff the Democrats wanted to push.

By the time we were well entrenched in the Bush administration, even Great Society level programs were just the ticket.

If Newt and the party actually believe what Newt espoused here, why even go to the effort of having a Republican party? Just dissolve the party and all of you install the U.S.S.R. here and be done with it.

What a disgusting position we live in today. Nobody in D.C. is representing us. They’ve all bought off on the political tenets that cost nearly 100 million people their lives in the 20th Century.

One actually wonders who would be too far right for Newt to vote for. I’m thinking Michelle Bachmann (sp?) and Sarah Palin would scare him to death.

Reading of his statement makes me think he might vote for the ‘moderate’ Obama instead of these ‘radicals’.

They’re Going to Ram It Through…
Dems are ready to nationalize the health care industry.
obamacare
(JSOnline)
Democrats are putting the final touches on their plan to takeover the nation’s health care industry.
The Wall Street Journal reported:

Top Senate Democrats are close to finalizing their health bill and could unveil a measure as soon as early this week that would include stiffer penalties on employers who fail to provide health coverage.

Senate leaders plan to submit the bill to the Congressional Budget Office for a cost estimate as soon as Monday, and make the legislation public as soon as Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

Details of the legislation could change, but its broad outlines are becoming clear. Employers with more than 50 workers wouldn’t be required to provide health insurance, but they would face fines of up to $750 per employee if even part of their work force received a government subsidy to buy health insurance, this person said. A bill passed by the Senate Finance Committee had a lower fine of up to $400 per employee.

The bill to be brought to the Senate floor would create a new public health-insurance plan, but would give states the choice of opting out of participating in it, a proposal that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada backed last week.

The bill is expected to expand health coverage to tens of millions of Americans by giving low- and middle-income Americans subsidies to offset the cost of insurance, and expanding the Medicaid federal-state insurance program to cover a broader swath of the poor. Most people would be required to buy insurance or pay a fine, though exceptions would be made for those deemed unable to afford it.

Also expected are new rules on insurers to prevent them from denying coverage to people with pre-existing health conditions and from dropping customers’ insurance once they become ill.

Would someone please explain how insurance companies can stay in business if they are forced to cover those high risk individuals?
How long before the close their doors?
And just think… You’ll be giving up your private plans and it will only cost a trillion dollars!
What a bargain.

They’ve been planning this for a long time.

The Club for Growth released its latest poll today that shows conservative Doug Hoffman has surged ahead of liberal democrat Bill Owens and liberal Republican Dede Scozzafava:

The poll of 300 likely voters, conducted October 24-25, 2009, shows Conservative Doug Hoffman at 31.3%, Democrat Bill Owens at 27.0%, Republican Dede Scozzafava at 19.7%, and 22% undecided. The poll’s margin of error is +/- 5.66%. No information was provided about any of the candidates prior to the ballot question.

This is the third poll done for the Club for Growth in the NY-23 special election, and Doug Hoffman is the only candidate to show an increase in his support levels in each successive poll. The momentum in the race is clearly with Hoffman.

You can donate to Doug’s campaign at his website here.

Meanwhile… Pro-Obama Stimulus Plan Dede Scozzafava campaigned with Pro-Obama Stimulus Senator Susan Collins this weekend.

A new poll released by Gallup found 40% of Americans consider themselves conservative.
Only 20% of Americans consider themselves far left liberals like Barack Obama.
gallup poll
Gallup reported:

Conservatives continue to outnumber moderates and liberals in the American populace in 2009, confirming a finding that Gallup first noted in June. Forty percent of Americans describe their political views as conservative, 36% as moderate, and 20% as liberal. This marks a shift from 2005 through 2008, when moderates were tied with conservatives as the most prevalent group.

For the record… This also shows how weak the Republican Party has become.
If there are twice as many conservatives as liberals in the country and the GOP holds minority status in the current government, there is something terribly wrong with the Republican Party leadership.

Hoffman takes the lead in NY-23

The Collapse of the British Liberal Order

Posted by Shannon Love on October 25th, 2009 (All posts by Shannon Love)

Via Instapundit comes a disturbing report that one-fifth of the British electorate would consider voting for the British Nationalist Party (BNP), which is considered by almost everyone left or right to be a genuine fascist party.

How did Britain come to this state?

Simple, the current liberal order has proven itself ineffective in addressing many of the major problems that Britain faces. As I wrote three years ago, liberal orders don’t slowly evolve into authoritarian ones. Instead, they become less and less effective until they suddenly collapse into an authoritarian order. People simply lose faith that the liberal order can function and they throw their support behind an authoritarian order just to survive.

The major problem in resisting authoritarian orders is the simple fact that they usually work quite well in the short term. In the 1920s, Mussolini was widely admired across the political spectrum for saving Italy from imploding after years of red socialist strikes and violence had all but shut down the country. Hitler pulled Germany out of the Great Depression spectacularly. The communists did manage to rapidly industrialize peasant economies (albeit at a staggering cost in lives). Less dramatically, authoritarian corporatist/state-capitalist regimes in South Korean, Taiwan and Singapore raised the population out of poverty and led to democracy in the former two.

The BNP could very well rise to power by quickly and easily fixing problems that many Britons see going unaddressed by the left.

Britain faces major problems with a permanent economic underclass, low economic mobility, illegal immigration and a large, vocal and often violent unassimilated Islamic subculture. The native working class in particular feels squeezed by economic competition from low-cost immigrants. More importantly, they have seen themselves relegated in social status to the bottom of the heap. Much as in America, where the once-venerated rural poor are now despised and ignored “rednecks,” lower-income white Britons now see themselves pushed aside and spit on in favor of the left fawning over illegal immigrants and Muslims.

The BNP could scoop up a lot of support if it could slow down illegal immigration. Doing so would give an immediate economic boost to Britain’s native low-skilled workers. Even easier, they could no doubt pick up a lot of support merely by treating low-income white Britons with respect and by putting them at the center of their policy recommendations.

By smearing as racist everyone concerned with illegal immigration and the overboard tolerance for radical Islam, the British left is desensitizing everyone to the legitimate charge when it is directed at the BNP. People think, “Well, I’m concerned about illegal immigration, Islamists, the white poor, etc., and I’m not a racist so maybe the BNP isn’t either.” The overuse of the left’s catch-all denunciation deprives it of meaning and force. People may simply stop listening to the left’s warnings because they’ve so many times labeled people with legitimate concerns as racist. By their own narcissism, self-righteousness and contempt, the left is actively driving people to fascist solutions just as their more radical ideological ancestors did back in the 1920s.

Worse, entire generations of Britons have been conditioned to believe that the state has a mo26ral obligation to care for them cradle-to-grave. It is a short step from there to the belief that the government has a moral obligation to care for native Britons first and foremost before all others. Such a longstanding belief in Germany certainly made National Socialism an easy sell to the German working class and poor.

If the mainstream parties cannot address the real concerns of many Britons, and if they cannot at least pretend to respect and value lower-income white Britons, then Britain may be only one ugly incident away from a political seismic shift. A major native Islamic terrorist attack or an immigrant riot might be all it takes to push Britain over the edge. Other European nations are at risk as well, for the same reasons.

Screaming accusations at absolutely everyone even mildly opposed to far-left ideas isn’t a substitute for effective policies that address the concerns of the people. If a liberal order cannot provide economic and physical security, a population conditioned to see state power as the solution to all problems can slide into authoritarianism almost overnight.

The Mother of Parliaments could give birth to something very dark indeed.

[Update (2009-10-26 7:38): I would also note that the current leftist's fad for derogating the history and traditions of Western nations has created a population that may see no value in the traditional concepts of limited government and rule of law. Also, the left pushes the idea that elitist decision making is superior to that of the people acting individually. This creates a built-in justification for authoritarian rule. As Hayek showed, Fascist and Communist regimes in 20s-40s exploited the ground work laid by democratic socialist. We could see the same thing in a modern form.]

BACK TO THE FUTURE: 1978 all over again? “Why did things go south for Carter so fast? Because America’s enemies had taken measure of the man during his first, change-filled year in office. They saw weaknesses they could exploit. In the second year, they made their move.” I’d say that at this point, a Carter-rerun is a best-case scenario.

Obama’s White House Boys’ Club: “Obama has played golf more times than George W. Bush did in his first 2 years. But there’s something even more interesting: Obama didn’t include any women in these golf rounds until last weekend, at which time he golfed with a woman once. . . . If there is any serious feminism left in this country — by which I mean the kind of feminism we had back before the Clinton presidency — it would ream a man who sought credit for inclusiveness toward women by referring to the fact that he had a wife and daughters in his household. . . . So maybe it’s a little like the post-racial America we were supposed to get — but didn’t get — after Obama was elected.

Newt for 2012? No, thanks.

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 26, 2009 09:47 AM

The most prominent GOP endorser of radical leftist NY-23 congressional candidate Dede Scozzafava is openly musing about running for president in 2012.

No, thanks:

Callista and I are going to think about this in February 2011. And we are going to reach out to all of our friends around the country. And we’ll decide, if there’s a requirement as citizens that we run, I suspect we probably will. And if there’s not a requirement, if other people have filled the vaccum, I suspect we won’t.

“They” shouldn’t bother.

The conservative base is wising up and pushing back. And constantly invoking Reagan isn’t going to erase the damage Gingrich has done to his brand over the years by wavering on core issues and teaming up with some of the Left’s biggest clowns.

Picture the cabinet:

Al Sharpton as education secretary.

Scozzafava as labor secretary.

Al Gore as global warming czar.

Noooooo, thanks.

And from Gallup:

Conservatives continue to outnumber moderates and liberals in the American populace in 2009, confirming a finding that Gallup first noted in June. Forty percent of Americans describe their political views as conservative, 36% as moderate, and 20% as liberal. This marks a shift from 2005 through 2008, when moderates were tied with conservatives as the most prevalent group.

The Chicago Sun-Times covered my speech in the Windy City to Republicans:

Conservative firebrand and columnist/blogger Michelle Malkin came to Chicago on Thursday night to slam President Obama in his hometown and to slap Republicans who work with Obama instead of fighting him.

“Many of you fight not just the culture of corruption among Democrats but the culture of corruption that has paralyzed and plagued much of the Republican Party nationally and locally,” Malkin told 250 members of the United Republican Fund of Illinois.

And Malkin made it clear to the crowd at the Hilton Chicago that she thinks Illinois and Chicago are “ground zero” for political corruption in America.

“You know the White House and its tax cheats, crooks and cronies better than anyone else in the country,” she said. “You tried to tell your friends around the country, and they wouldn’t listen, and now they’re having tremendous buyer’s remorse.”

Malkin did not name any Illinois Republican candidates she considered disloyal or corrupt, but she said, “One of the problems I see here is you have Republicans candidates accepting money and support from some organizations that funded Barack Obama.”

Malkin also took a shot at Education Secretary Arne Duncan: “There are some delusional mainstream conservatives who think Arne Duncan is a friend because he pays lip service to charter schools. Wake up and smell the radical socialism!”

Twelve Reasons For A Job Loss Recovery

Here are a few recent examples.

July 14: Bernanke Sees Chance of Jobless Recovery

Given that the Fed's first mission is to delay, confuse, hope, and otherwise attempt to buy time while engaging in wishful thinking along the way, that Bernanke is willing to admit this may be a jobless recovery is a sign that things will likely be at least that bad. In other words, prepare for a job loss recovery.

If the pattern holds, unemployment will rise until 2011 or beyond.

So while everyone is tooting horns and cheering the end of the end of the recession before it has even ended, those graphs and comments from Bernanke himself will put the pending job loss Recovery into better perspective.
What is bringing this idea to the forefront now is all the enthusiasm over what is destined to be the weakest recovery ever.

cap and trade
aip
Here is my latest column at American Issues Project:

Dem’s Cap and Trade Bill Is a 3.6 Trillion Dollar Gas Tax Too

Democrats know their cap and trade energy legislation will cripple the US economy. Barack Obama admitted this on the campaign trail in 2008 saying the program “would cause energy prices to skyrocket.” Obama also promised an audience of supporters that cap and trade would bankrupt the coal industry. White House Budget Director Peter Orszag told George Stephanopoulos in a March 2009 interview that Obama’s proposed cap and trade energy legislation would increase energy costs for everyone. Democratic Congressman John Dingell (D-MI) summed up cap and trade at a Congressional hearing on April 24th saying, “It’s a Great Big Tax.”

Cap and trade policies will likely cost Americans $700 to $1,400 dollars per family per year. The Department of Energy estimated GDP losses would be between $444 billion and $1.308 trillion over the 21-year period. Cap and trade also could cost the US 4 million jobs.

But that’s not all. Cap and trade would also mean a massive new national gas tax on American families and American business. Cap and trade legislation will drive up the prices of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. Higher fuel costs will feel like a new gas tax that will hit consumers at every income level, in every state, in every field of transportation and manufacturing.

Senators Kit Bond (R-MO) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) released a report this week on the massive new national gas tax on American families and businesses as a result of the Waxman-Markey cap and trade legislation…

You can read the rest on the democrat’s $3.6 trillion gas tax here. There is also a list of my recent columns on this page.

The US Senate starts deliberating on the democrat’s junk science tax today in committee.

UPDATE: Sarah Palin wrote about America’s energy future today and asked, “Petroleum is a major part of America’s energy picture. Shall we get it here or abroad?”

Obama --- Signing away sovereignty

The Spending Rolls On

“Public Option” by any other name….

What is it with Democrats always denying who they are and what they're peddling? Liberalism has a negative stigma attached to it in conservative America; so Democrats now prefer you call them "progressives". The word "socialist" is the new "N" word, but it describes President Obama's instinctual gravitations and political inclinations. Why deny it? Why hide from the description? Democrats who revel in communist/Marxist/socialist doctrine should come out of the closet and bask in the transparency of who they are. Be proud! Don't hide! Don't obfuscate.

FBI raid at meat processor believed tied to immigration irregularities [UPDATE:TERROR PLOT -ARRESTS]

Anxious Crowds Meet Ad Hoc Swine Flu Police

The top public health official in Los Angeles County stood at a swine flu vaccination site in Compton, Calif., on Tuesday and gently told elderly residents that they really ought to go home.

BARNEY FRANK TELLS THE TRUTH: “We Are Trying On Every Front To Increase The Role Of Government.” Just in case there was any doubt.

MORE ON THE BNP’S SUDDEN SURGE, at The Belmont Club.

Leaks which showed how Labour intentionally flooded Britain with immigrants in order to gain a permanent political majority and rub multiculturalism in the faces of poor whites have provoked a storm of outrage in the UK. It plays directly into the BNP narrative of invasion abetted by leftist treason. The Telegraph reported that “Labour threw open Britain’s borders to mass immigration to help socially engineer a ‘truly multicultural’ country, a former Government adviser has revealed.” But it was manner in which the plan was sugar-coated which rankled the most. It was, if the leaks are to be believed, an ideological conspiracy sold as a plan to bolster the economy. It’s almost as if the Left set out to paint itself in the very same colors the BNP wanted it to don. . . . What the Left and Fascism share is a belief in the transformative power of the state. Both regard government as the “high ground” of society and not, as some Americans still believe, simply a necessary evil.

Irresponsible and dishonest government abets evil. Plus, some further thoughts from Andrew Ian Dodge. “There is nothing wrong with disliking the BNP. They are neo-Nazis. The problem is that the political establishment is in a tizzy, and they have no idea how to deal with them. . . . The major parties are not addressing the subjects on which the BNP are gaining votes. Citizens are expressing concern about the present level of immigration, Muslim extremism, and lack of equal access to jobs, education, and social housing.

The Nature of the Tranzi Totalitarian Progressive Movement is anti-American to the core. Since the 60’s they have supported all of America’s enemies, whether it was their Communist ideological brothers or their new Islamic allies. Directors like Oliver Stone make movies praising our enemies like Hugo Chavez. Leftwing news outlets like GE owned MSNBC openly supports Al-Qaeda in Iraq (See Update)and the Iranian Regime. While our forces are in Afghanistan increasingly demoralized, the enemy has taken over here at home. Barack Hussein Obama and his Progressive minions seek to destroy America and remake it into a Totalitarian State.

Obama-Stalin2

Just one year ago, would you have believed that an unelected government official, not even a Cabinet member confirmed by the Senate but simply one of the many “czars” appointed by the President, could arbitrarily cut the pay of executives in private businesses by 50 percent or 90 percent?

Did you think that another “czar” would be talking about restricting talk radio? That there would be plans afloat to subsidize newspapers– that is, to create a situation where some newspapers’ survival would depend on the government liking what they publish?

Did you imagine that anyone would even be talking about having a panel of so-called “experts” deciding who could and could not get life-saving medical treatments?

This is not a coincidence. This is being done by design. Radical leftist, Barney Frank, even admitted their goal is government control over people’s lives. Even Pravda, which used to be the mouth piece of the Russian Progressives (Soviets), states America is moving towards a totalitarian system! The American Progressives are Neo-Feudalists who desire to control every aspect of our lives. This should be a warning sign to Americans. The Obama-Progressive Regime is evil and it must be defeated.

This is a war for the survival of America as we know it. Politics is war to the Progressives which is why the Conservative-Libertarian coalition must ignore the McCain-Bush wing of the GOP and fight all out. We must show them no mercy because our very future is at stake!

Update: When I stated GE supported AL-Qaeda in Iraq, what I was getting at is the fact that in 2005/2006 MSNC celebrated the Deaths of US soldiers. Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews where extatic whenever there would be deaths in Iraq. They even subliminally praised the Insurgents like AQI and the Mehdi Army. Also by dealing with Iran, they assisted in a back door way AQI and the Mehdi Army. This was not a coincidence. GE/MSNBC/NBC also attacked any idea of Striking Iran’s Nuke plants as well. This was done to help the Progressives achieve power in America. GE has the blood of Americans on their hands.

Ben Stein on Barack Obama : We've Figured Him Out

For the first time this year a majority of Americans now believe that the US is on the wrong track.
52% of Americans say the country is on the wrong track. Only 36% believe it is on the right track.
Politics Daily reported, via Free Republic:

While the stock market has picked up and the country appears to be pulling out of the recession, a majority of Americans – for the first time in the Obama presidency – says the U.S. is headed down the wrong track, according to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll conducted Oct. 22-25.

52 percent say the country is on the wrong track compared to 36 percent who say it is headed in the right direction with 9 percent saying conditions are mixed and 3 percent undecided. While there have been pluralities saying the U.S. is on the wrong track in four of the previous five WSJ/NBC polls during Obama’s presidency, this is the first time the number broke 50 percent. The one month where that was not true was April when 43 percent said things were on the right track and an equal number said they were going in the opposite direction.

POLITICO: Obama Already Defending His Legacy: “President Barack Obama has been in office just nine months and already he is defending his legacy, pushing back more aggressively against criticism of his record on health care, climate change, closing Guantanamo, reforming immigration laws and financial regulations and managing the war in Afghanistan.” This isn’t a good sign.

Plus this: “Democratic strategist Chris Lehane likened Obama’s recent speeches to testing out a new message with a ’series of rolling focus groups.’” Because that’s how you build a good legacy. With focus groups.

DEMOCRATS SENDING UP WARNING FLARES.

Not all Democrats have drunk the Obama Kool-Aid. Not all of them think Obama’s main worries are Fox and the Chamber of Commerce. Some, like William Galston, are trying to send up a warning flare:

It is hard to avoid the conclusion that unified Democratic government has sparked a conservative counter-mobilization. Because we cannot rerun history as a controlled experiment, we will never know whether this could have been avoided had the Obama administration and Congressional Democrats adopted a different strategy. In any case, it’s too late to reverse it.

Well, they could stop making it worse. They could dump a massive, unpopular bill (or, more correctly, many ideas for many kinds of bills) to take over the health-care system. They could stop massaging the cap-and-trade bill. And they might enact a series of pro-growth, pro-jobs measures meant to appeal to independent voters. Obama might also tell off his netroot base and declare he will do what is necessary to achieve victory (now there’s a word to add to his vocabulary!) in Afghanistan and prevent, if necessary by military means, a nuclear-armed Iran. In other words, he could behave like he sounded for much of the campaign.

All that might improve his party’s prospects. And it might actually improve the hiring situation. As this report explains, employers, especially small businesses, are paralyzed with fear:

Blogmocracy In Action

Guest Blogger: Ornery Elephant

As it says in this article at Family Security Matters, the “cat is out of the bag” and the news is disturbing at the very least. The word is out that the humongeous and hideous number of islamic immigrations into Great Britain over the past decade and a half was all planned by the government….it was executed on purpose IN ORDER TO MAKE BRITAIN MORE MULTICULTURAL! I kid you not.

Read this and if you are in Britain, weep. If you are in America, read this and get ready to fight this new plague upon our land.

The Uncovered Conspiracy to Transform Britain

So now the cat is well and truly out of the bag. For years, as the number of immigrants to Britain shot up apparently uncontrollably, the question was how exactly this had happened.

Was it through a fit of absent-mindedness or gross incompetence? Or was it not inadvertent at all, but deliberate?

The latter explanation seemed just too outrageous. After all, a deliberate policy of mass immigration would have amounted to nothing less than an attempt to change the very makeup of this country without telling the electorate.

There could not have been a more grave abuse of the entire democratic process. Now, however, we learn that this is exactly what did happen. The Labour government has been engaged upon a deliberate and secret policy of national cultural sabotage.

This astonishing revelation surfaced quite casually last weekend in a newspaper article by one Andrew Neather. He turns out to have been a speech writer for Tony Blair, Jack Straw and David Blunkett.

And it was he who wrote a landmark speech in September 2000 by the then immigration minister, Barbara Roche, that called for a loosening of immigration controls. But the true scope and purpose of this new policy was actively concealed.

In its 1997 election manifesto, Labour promised “firm control over immigration” and in 2005 it promised a “crackdown on abuse.” In 2001, its manifesto merely said that the immigration rules needed to reflect changes to the economy to meet skills shortages.

But all this concealed a monumental shift of policy. For Neather wrote that until “at least February last year,” when a new points-based system was introduced to limit foreign workers in response to increasing uproar, the purpose of the policy Roche ushered in was to open up the UK to mass immigration.

This has been achieved. Some 2.3million migrants have been added to the population since 2001. Since 1997, the number of work permits has quadrupled to 120,000 a year.

Unless policies change, over the next 25 years some seven million more will be added to Britain’s population, a rate of growth three times as fast as took place in the ‘80s.

Such an increase is simply unsustainable. Britain is already one of the most overcrowded countries in Europe. But now look at the real reason why this policy was introduced, and in secret. The Government’s “driving political purpose,” wrote Neather, was “to make the UK truly multicultural.”

It was therefore a politically motivated attempt by ministers to transform the fundamental makeup and identity of this country. It was done to destroy the right of the British people to live in a society defined by a common history, religion, law, language and traditions.

It was done to destroy for ever what it means to be culturally British and to put another “multicultural” identity in its place. And it was done without telling or asking the British people whether they wanted their country and their culture to be transformed in this way.

Spitefully, one motivation by Labour ministers was “to rub the Right’s nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date.”

Even Neather found that particular element of gratuitous Left-wing bullying to be “a manoeuvre too far.”

Yet apart from this, Neather sees nothing wrong in the policy he has described. Indeed, the reason for his astonishing candor is he thinks it’s something to boast about. Mass immigration, he wrote, had provided the “foreign nannies, cleaners and gardeners” without whom London could hardly function.

What elitist arrogance! As if most people employ nannies, cleaners and gardeners. And what ignorance. The argument that Britain is better off with this level of immigration has been conclusively shown to be economically illiterate.

[...]

But the most shattering revelation was that this policy of mass immigration was not introduced to produce nannies or cleaners for the likes of Neather. It was to destroy Britain’s identity and transform it into a multicultural society where British attributes would have no greater status than any other country’s.

A measure of immigration is indeed good for a country. But this policy was not to enhance British culture and society by broadening the mix. It was to destroy its defining character altogether.

It also conveniently guaranteed an increasingly Labour-voting electorate since, as a recent survey by the Electoral Commission has revealed, some 90 percent of black people and three-quarters of Asians vote Labour.

In Neather’s hermetically sealed bubble, the benefits of mass immigration were so overwhelming he couldn’t understand why ministers had been so nervous about it.

They were, he wrote, reluctant to discuss what increased immigration would mean, above all to Labour’s core white working class vote. So they deliberately kept it secret.

They knew that if they told the truth about what they were doing, voters would rise up in protest. So they kept it out of their election manifestos.

It was indeed a conspiracy to deceive the electorate into voting for them. And yet it is these very people who have the gall to puff themselves up in self-righteous astonishment at the rise of the BNP.

No wonder Jack Straw was so shifty on last week’s Question Time when he was asked whether it was the Government’s failure to halt immigration which lay behind increasing support for the BNP.

Now we know it was no such failure of policy. It was deliberate. For the government of which Straw is such a long- standing member had secretly plotted to flood the country with immigrants to change its very character and identity.

This more than any other reason is why Nick Griffin has gained so much support. According to a YouGov poll taken after Question Time, no fewer than 22 per cent of British voters would “seriously consider” voting for the BNP.

That nearly one quarter of British people might vote for a neo-Nazi party with views inimical to democracy, human rights and common decency is truly appalling.

The core reason is that for years they have watched as their country’s landscape has been transformed out of all recognition – and that politicians from all mainstream parties have told them first that it isn’t happening and second, that they are racist bigots to object even if it is.

Now the political picture has been transformed overnight by the unguarded candor of Andrew Neather’s eye-opening superciliousness. For now we know that Labour politicians actually caused this to happen – and did so out of total contempt for their own core voters.

[...]

Condemned out of its own mouth, it is New Labour that is responsible for the rise of the BNP — by an act of unalloyed treachery to the entire nation.

Lead Story

Obama’s FCC, liberal churches, and the “media justice” mob

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 28, 2009 04:59 AM

My syndicated column today (reprinted below) probes the FCC/left-wing church alliance to silence conservative critics of illegal immigration through “hate speech” regulation. Tip of the iceberg.

Jeffrey Lord at the American Spectator first broke the story of how United Church of Christ officials met with kindred spirit/FCC Commissioner Michael Copps earlier this month before launching a nationwide campaign to pressure the FCC to crack down on cable TV and talk radio figures.

The motto of the “So We Might See” anti-”hate speech” campaign is: “Without media justice, there will be no social justice!” The same Marx-loving “social justice” crowd is behind the “media justice” mob — including George Soros’s Open Society Institute, Media Democracy Fund, and Media Matters; the Ford Foundation; the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; etc., etc., etc. Their goal: government redistribution of media wealth. As “The Media Justice Fund” put it: The movement “is grounded in the belief that social and economic justice will not be realized without the equitable redistribution and control of media and communication technologies.” And there’s that phrase “transformative change” again:

* Media change of all kinds must expose and directly confront the mechanics of structural racism and systemic oppression.
* Leaders from historically marginalized communities must be developed as effective media activists and strategic movement communicators.
* Media policy advocacy and strategic communications are more effective when clearly relevant to the primary justice issues of the movement for racial justice, economic and gender equity, and youth rights.
* Compelling communications and media activism campaigns must be both rooted in critical issues and coordinated across issue, sector, and region for national impact.
* When justice sectors strengthen communications strategies, center the use of culture as a communications tool, employ winning frames and messages, and strengthen their influence over media rules and rights, the possibilities for transformative change skyrocket.

“Transformative change” = a media landscape purged of the Right’s most powerful voices.

The White House communications shop gives two thumbs up, no doubt.

How the FCC and liberal churches are scheming to shut you up

The war on conservative speech has moved from the White House to your neighborhood pews. Left-wing church leaders want the Federal Communications Commission to crack down on “hate speech” over cable TV and right-leaning talk radio airwaves. President Obama’s speech-stifling bureaucrats seem all too happy to oblige.

Over the past week, an outfit called “So We Might See” has conducted a nationwide fast to protest “media violence” – specifically, “anti-immigrant hate speech, which employs flawed arguments to appeal to fears rather than facts.” Their ire is currently aimed at Fox News and conservative talk show giants. But how long before they target ordinary citizens who call in to complain about the government’s systemic refusal to enforce federal sanctions on illegal alien employers or the bloody consequences of lax deportation policies?

The “interfaith coalition for media justice” is led by the United Church of Christ. Yes, that’s the same church of Obama’s race-baiting, Jew-bashing ex-pastor Jeremiah Wright. Other members include the Presbyterian News Service, the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the National Council of Churches. (The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has denied being a part of the campaign, despite being listed as a coalition member. So has the Methodist church.) These religious liberals have partnered with the National Hispanic Media Coalition, which filed a petition in January demanding that the FCC collect data, seek public comment, and “explore options” for combating “hate speech” from staunch critics of illegal immigration.

Open-borders groups have sought to marginalize, criminalize, and demonize those of us who have raised our voices for years about lax immigration enforcement — and to impose an Orwellian Fairness Doctrine-style policy on illegal alien amnesty opponents. During the presidential campaign, the National Council of La Raza launched a “We Can Stop the Hate” project to redefine tough policy criticism from the Right as “hate.” La Raza president Janet Murguia called for TV networks to keep immigration enforcement proponents off the airwaves and argued that hate speech should not be tolerated, “even if such censorship were a violation of First Amendment rights,” according to the NYTimes.

Now, the gag-wielders have a friend in the White House – and they won’t let him forget it. Their FCC petition calling for a crackdown on illegal immigration critics cites Obama’s own words in a fall 2008 speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Obama told his amnesty-supporting audience that he knew they were “counting on us to stop the hateful rhetoric filling the airwaves.”

Unsurprisingly, far Left billionaire George Soros’s money is backing the “So We Might See”/National Hispanic Media Coalition effort. And remember that the Soros-funded Center for American Progress has provided the Obama White House with its Fairness Doctrine-embracing “diversity czar,” Mark Lloyd.

Last week, United Church of Christ officials met privately with Obama FCC Commissioner Michael J. Copps in advance of the “So We Might See” campaign. Copps then delivered a lecture at the UCC’s Riverside Church in New York City, expressing solidarity with the liberal church leaders’ goals and egging the congregants to take action on “media reform: ”We are taking huge risks with our democracy. We need to change that and we need to do it now. We need to get a grip on what’s happening and we need to fix it.”

Jeffrey Lord, who happens to belong to the United Church of Christ, reported in the American Spectator that not long after that speech, the UCC sent out a mass e-mail to its millions of members urging them to join the nationwide fast and regulatory drive. The church-state alliance missive directed its followers: “As a participant, you will be asked to sign a petition to the Federal Communications Commission asking that it open a notice of inquiry into hate speech in the media.”

No word on when they’ll be launching an inquiry into the fear-based, fact-free “hate speech” from the mouth of Florida Democrat Rep. Alan Grayson, who accused Republicans of wanting sick patients to “die quickly,” likened health care problems to the “Holocaust,” and attacked an adviser to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke as a “K Street whore.”

Or when they’ll be going after MSNBC and Air America radio hate-mongers who have openly wished on their airwaves for the deaths of George W. Bush, Rush Limbaugh, and Glenn Beck.

But I digress. In the age of Obama, the targets of left-wing hate speech don’t have a prayer.
