Archbishop Chaput: ‘We Are Catholics Before We Are Americans’

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia urged the faithful to put their faith ahead of politics, according to an interview with Catholic News Service within two weeks of the presidential election.

The Catholic leader clarified the duty of Catholics as he discussed the politics of abortion. He emphasized a need to honor God above country, of “Catholic identity taking precedence over everything.”

“We’re Catholics before we’re Democrats. We’re Catholics before we’re Republicans. We’re even Catholics before we’re Americans because we know that God has a demand on us prior to any government demand on us,” he said in a new interview with the wire service. “And this has been the story of the martyrs through the centuries,” Chaput said.

“[Abortion] is a very serious issue that requires absolute adherence on the part of Catholics,” said the Philadelphia archbishop, “and if we don’t stand united on this issue we’re bound to failure—not only in the area of protecting unborn human life but in maintaining our religious freedom.”

I'm more of a Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I fully support the Constitution myself, so no contradiction there.

In any case, not something I believe in.

Augustine speaks of us having citizenship in two cites. The City of Man, which would loosley be the USA, and the City of God.

They both have some separate areas of concern. The Church doesn't have a lot to say on speed limits for example, but those who are of the City of God must realize we are just traveling here. This City is not our real home.

The danger is that most tend to drift more into the city of man. In other words, the reason why so many Catholics are devout Democrats is that their society or family group are culturally that way, and they value their standing in that group more than the standing in the Church.

Right ... and when the City of Man starts to step outside its bounds, and say things like "killing babies OK" ... then we have a problem, and we must choose which "City" has our first and highest loyalty.

They have chosen where to place their loyalty. They have chosen poorly, IMO. They have rendered unto Caesar what is God's.

Yes, I have! in fact, here is how “The Pledge” has “evolved” through time:
1892:
“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.”
1892 to 1923:
“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.”
1923 to 1954:
“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.”
1954 to Present:
“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.”

The reason it was changed in 1954, was in response to a little thing called Soviet Russia, and it’s little doctrine called Communism, otherwise, it would have remained unchanged, until this current President could get his fingers around it.

I was born before the last literary change, which I have no problem embracing.

I am swearing/pledging allegiance to the FLAG, that has flown over every military installation that I grew up on, and in my own time, served upon. It is the FLAG that drapes our fallen military members’ caskets, who have given their all in securing our Freedom. It is the FLAG that was once draped over the casket of a slain President in 1963, who was also a WW2 veteran. It is the FLAG that was draped over my best friend’s casket, when returned from Vietnam, in 1969.

That FLAG is the very symbol of Freedom, bought and paid for in the blood of our GI’s, throughout time.

Thanks for posting this. I have not read the rest of the Bishop’s remarks, but he could have gone on to point out the important steps between God and Country that are habitually omitted when this topic comes up in the USA. My loyalty should be, in decreasing order of priority and probably leaving out some intermediates, to God, my family, my neighbors, my town, my county (not country), my state, and only then and presuming no conflict with higher priorities, to the federal government. After all these, of course, might come NATO, the UN, etc. Unfortunately, with the deliberate Balkanisation of the USA along ethnic lines we may all soon have to wrestle with where to insert our tribes into this hierarchy of loyalty.

That’s not logically sound. How many athiests would side with their country if their country told them they had to worship God, go to Church, pay taxes to support the established faith, and not use birth control?

In the end, if that were the situation, an athiest must choose his conscience over his nation. If he doesn’t, he will hate himself, hate his nation, and be useless to society in any matter concerning truth.
