Pre-Columbian origins of Native American dog breeds, with only limited replacement by European dogs, confirmed by mtDNA analysis

Dogs were present in pre-Columbian America, presumably brought by early human migrants from Asia. Studies of free-ranging village/street dogs have indicated almost total replacement of these original dogs by European dogs, but the extent to which Arctic, North and South American breeds are descendants of the original population remains to be assessed.

Using a comprehensive phylogeographic analysis, we traced the origin of the mitochondrial DNA lineages for Inuit, Eskimo and Greenland dogs, Alaskan Malamute, Chihuahua, xoloitzcuintli and perro sín pelo del Peru, by comparing to extensive samples of East Asian (n = 984) and European dogs (n = 639), and previously published pre-Columbian sequences. Evidence for a pre-Columbian origin was found for all these breeds, except Alaskan Malamute for which results were ambigous.

No European influence was indicated for the Arctic breeds Inuit, Eskimo and Greenland dog, and North/South American breeds had at most 30% European female lineages, suggesting marginal replacement by European dogs. Genetic continuity through time was shown by the sharing of a unique haplotype between the Mexican breed Chihuahua and ancient Mexican samples.

We also analysed free-ranging dogs, confirming limited pre-Columbian ancestry overall, but also identifying pockets of remaining populations with high proportion of indigenous ancestry, and we provide the first DNA-based evidence that the Carolina dog, a free-ranging population in the USA, may have an ancient Asian origin.

This is how you tell a dog is a Native American dog:

1) How do you spot the difference between an a regular canine and a Rez dog?

Throw each one in the oven at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

The canine should come out tender and moist.

The Rez dog will come out with a towel wrapped around his waist saying,
“Damn that was a good sweat!”

AND.....

2) REZ DOGS
Between the reservation and the city, there is a road that marks the boundary lines. On one side of the road are the rez dogs, and they just kind of lie around staying cool. On the city side are the city dogs, and they always chase cars as they go down the road, barking, “Bow-wow, Bow-wow”.
One day the city dogs ask the rez dogs, “How come you never chase cars with us?”

The rez dogs respond, “What’s the point, it’s just a waste of time. The cars don’t do anything when you chase them.”

The city dogs tell the rez dogs that they think its just a lot of fun, so finally the rez dogs agree to try it just once. The next car comes down the road, and the dogs from both sides chase the car.

The city dogs bark, “Bow-wow, Bow-wow.”

And the rez dogs chase too, barking, “Bow-wow, Bow-wow, Bow-wow, Bow-wow ...........aaaaaaaaaaaaaye!”

My kids just got back from a mission trip on an Indian Reservation - will share this. They got a kick out of all the rez dogs running around.

The one leader found out the hard way to keep the windows rolled up. Opened the door one morning and two of them scared the heck out of her as they bailed out of her car!

My mom adopted a catahoula. He’s 4 now, and he’s a monster dog. I can definitely see how they’d be used in hunting. He’s all muscle, VERY fast if not a little gangly, and his head is enormous. I would not want to get bitten by him.

We don't go to Mexico anymore but we did for years. We always saw dogs we called Mexican Yellow Dogs wandering the streets. I always thought they were Carolina Dogs in origin. We have a Black Mouth Cur and I have often wondered if they came from the Carolina.
