At the request of members, I am restarting those "Tales from the Dark UnderBelly Of the Beast"-- the stories and issues that the press and media either ignore, won't even talk about, or will mention once and forevermore claim "it's old news..."
Naturally, some will be stories which interest me, or things I think we all need to be aware of.
I am experimenting with a minor change in presentation- when I can, I will cut to
-GoogleNewsBeta--
with a keyword or two and see what kind of links to "mainstream" stories I can find in contrast to what we see here and on other sites.
May I remind you of a couple of points to bear in mind?
Each link usually has many other links within- follow them all to get "the rest of the story."
Don't forget the "open multiple browsers" trick with control-n -- this allows you to hold your place with one, and use the others to follow links, run searches, etc.
Rather than go back and rehash old links, I'll give you links to the original posts here:
-DUBOB 10- the *best of* the Dark Underbelly Series--
-DUBOB 9-- even *more* tales from the Dark Underbelly of the Beast..... --
DUBOB 8-- still *more* tales from the Underbelly***

Harper's "Katrina"? Or CBC's "Rathergate"?
Reader "TomR" writes in the comments about something I've also noticed - the similarity of tone in Canadian media coverage of the evacuation from Lebanon with the (now largely discredited) reporting from New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina;
Canada's media has seized on to Harper's "Katrina" and isn't going to let it go. No matter what is done for Canadians in Lebanon, it will not be enough. Just think back to Katrina last year and you hear the same things coming from the ingrates that the MSM finds: relief wasn't fast enough, why weren't they prepared for this, it's so disorganized, there's not enough food & water, it's too hot, they're treating us like animals, etc. No-one to be found that is grateful for being rescued and few questions about how thousands of people came to be in the predicament to begin with.
Except, I don't think it's working. And that's not a perception coming from callers to talk radio - read some of the responses at
Al-Jazeera North; (link fixed)
Who are these people? First, they complain that the government doesn't have a complete flotilla standing by on 24 hours notice to evacuate them from any place in the world. Then, when the flotilla does show up, they complain that it wasn`t first class. Someone ought to tell them to stop the whining and the CBC ought to stop giving credence to this nonsense.
I do believe that the pursuit of this particular agenda by a tone-deaf Liberal media is about to result in no small degree of blowback. And consider that these are the comments that were
allowed through the editorial filter of the CBC. I can't begin to imagine what was rejected.

'Terrorist cell' arrests in Italy
One would hope that discovering members of the Salafist Group for Call and Combat (GSPC), operating in multiple Italian cities (and who knows how many more?) would bolster the political will in Europe to deal with rampant illegal immigration from North Africa. But that remains unlikely as long as such activities are attributed to that ever-expanding Tiny Minority of Extremists.

They've called 5,000 reserves in Israel. Ground invasion likely (good). Meanwhile we are talking 12,000 katuyshas. 12,000, and the bloodthirsty international community rubs their hands in delight.
There is no way to destroy all the rockets through air strikes. Hizballah has twelve thousand katyushas; it has launched only a few hundred of those. These are rockets that can be stored in cars and launched anywhere, so the idea of a ground operation would be to suppress the rocket launching, not to destroy the rockets. In the end, the way to end the rocket barrages is to exact a price for the use of such weapons.

I am sick and tired of hearing about the poor Lebanese people. It's the Israelis under siege. The Jew hating press doesn't talk about that although FOX has been far more balanced than any other news outlet but if I hear them say Hezbollah "militant" one more time, I am going to cry.
And another thing, who gives a shit about what the evacuees think? Isn't it enough we are paying their way back to America -- WTF was that all about? I have to listen to their political opinions, too? What a joke, listening to some pisher fresh out of college talk about peace.
Good piece from O'Reilly. Finally, big voices are getting it.
From the "comments"--Deepdiver, that letter need to be pondered by everyone- let's see if I can hotlink it:
-letter from a Maltese woman--Benedict XVI
The Boss Is back in town;
In a brief exchange with reporters on July 18, as he returned to his vacation home in the Alpine village of Les Combes after a long afternoon hike, the Holy Father responded to a question about the Middle East by saying, "I fully agree with the G8 statement." At their meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, the G8 leaders had approved a statement calling for an immediate ceasefire. The G8 statement urged Israel to act with restraint, but suggested that the primary blame for the latest violence should fall upon Hezbollah terrorists.
"These extremist elements and those that support them cannot be allowed to plunge the Middle East into chaos and provoke a wider conflict," the G8 leaders agreed. "The extremists must immediately halt their attacks."
Pope Benedict said that in his view, the G8 statement "indicates the path" that should be taken toward peace in the Middle East. That statement had called for the safe return of Israeli soldiers who have been captured in Gaza and Lebanon; a halt to the rocket attacks and terror bombings on Israeli territory; the end of Israeli military operations in Lebanon; rapid withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza; and the release of Palestinian parliamentary leaders who have been arrested by Israeli forces.
"I have nothing to add," Pope Benedict said, "except the importance of prayer that God will help us."
This is in contrast to the earlier condemnation of Israelby "The Vatican" that was in fact, issued by one Cardinal Sodona - who has a reputation as "an extreme liberal who has spewing anti-American and anti-Israel statements for years."
Related - "The [US Congress], displaying a foreign affairs solidarity lacking on issues such as Iraq, voted overwhelmingly yesterday to support Israel in its confrontation with Hezbollah guerrillas."
The resolution, which was passed on a 410-8 vote, also condemns enemies of the Jewish state.

As Israel continues to pummel Hezbollah, the terrorists are demanding negotiations:
It'll be interesting to witness those sorts of negotiations, should they occur. I say that because Hezbollah is populated with the sort of people who can't imagine that they are wrong. There is no room for compromise. They can't even tolerate that other people don't believe in the things they do.
That attitude is displayed on the Hezbollah website. Consider Holocaust denial: Comments (7) :

"The US is the cradle of democracy, and Israel is the cradle of reality."
This is the word I've been looking for to describe what's going on all over the world.
sahwa
Muslims believe that the world is witnessing a significant phase of Islamic awakening (sahwa), after centuries of hibernation. Judging from what I hear and read, the vast majority of Muslims believe this wave of Islamic awakening is unstoppable and will continue to go from strength to strength until the word of Allah, that is, Islam is victorious with the complete annihilation of all other religions.
Got that? It's a sahwa. Now that we have an Arabic word for it the Left will have to be more creative to deny its existence. hattip:Beagle

MOGADISHU, Somalia - An Islamic militia leader whose forces control the capital called for a holy war Friday against Ethiopian troops protecting Somalias weak U.N.-backed government.
Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys, speaking on Radio Shabelle, said Ethiopias decision to send troops to protect the transitional government in Baidoa, 150 miles northwest of Mogadishu, must be met with war.

A Change Of Implant
I spent an hour this afternoon in the company of one of the most interesting men in American politics: Karl Rove. He came to Minnesota to attend fundraisers for Michele Bachmann and Mark Kennedy and to meet with state Republican Party leaders to consult on the ongoing efforts. The White House called earlier this week to arrange a meeting with bloggers, and several of us managed to squeeze this unique opportunity into our busy schedules: Michael from Minnesota Democrats Exposed, Gary from Residual Forces, and Andy from Kennedy vs The Machine.
Rove had just come from the Bachmann luncheon, where they raised $15,000 for her campaign. The Kennedy event comes later tonight. He mentioned how impressed he was with Michele and her family. She and her husband have managed professional careers and five children -- yet made time to provide a home for 23 foster children. He felt that both campaigns were doing well, and laughed when we brought up the Minnesota Poll regarding Kennedy's supposed 19-point deficit with Amy Klobuchar. No one at the party HQ took that seriously at all, and while Rove hasn't seen any polling, he knows that Kennedy can't be 19 points back in a state where all but one of the constitutional officers are Republican.
This was an interesting chat. We had met once before, on our trip to Washington DC almost exactly a year ago, and he still recalled our conversation. The conversation remained mostly fixed on elections and campaigning -- obviously his forté -- but he remembered teasing me about all of the blogging I had done on Canadian politics. Rove told me that he had the chance to spend some time with Stephen Harper and was pleasantly surprised about how geniune the Canadian PM was. He and I agreed that Harper's transparency played against him for too long; Liberals tried for years to make his openness into some sort of false front that masked a "hidden agenda". Canadians now have found out how wrong that assessment was.
Mostly, though, Rove talked about campaigns and the necessity of grassroots efforts in modern political campaigns. His experience in Texas showed him the critical nature of grassroots. In 1977 when he first arrived, Democrats controlled both houses of the legislature by wide margins and held every statewide office. Rove and the Republicans put good candidates together with a wide network of volunteers, phone banks, and measurable objectives -- and they transformed Texas in less than twenty years. Now the GOP holds all the statewide offices and both houses of the Legislature.
During the first Bush presidential campaign, they used the same model. He spoke about his experiences in West Virginia, where they had not seen any kind of grassroots campaign before. The last time the state had a national party HQ was in 1972, and the last presidential-ticket visit came in 1956, when Richard Nixon did a airport appearance. Rove helped the GOP open 28 offices throughout the state, and it resulted in a 22-point turnaround from 1996, when Bob Dole lost the state by 16 points to Bill Clinton. Bush took it by 6 over Al Gore.
Rove also talked about the "two great myths of American politics": single-issue voters and "the base", as defined by critics. Rove thinks that those who claim to be single-issue voters actually show much more nuance when the choices cease to be hypothetical. As far as "the base" goes, Rove laughed it off as a straw man for critics of the GOP. Of late, many pundits have claimed that Rove wants to win elections by pandering to a narrow political slice of the spectrum. He counters this by noting that Bush received many more votes in 2004 than he did in 2000, even by percentage. People win elections, Rove said, by broadening their appeal, not by narrowing it.
We did spend some time talking about this election cycle. He's optimistic about holding both chambers of Congress this year. The Senate is almost a foregone conclusion to remain in GOP control just because of the numbers involved. The Democrats have more at risk than the Republicans, and they would have to run the table to force a change. He's even pretty confident of being able to hold the House. Incumbents win almost all of the time, and when they don't it's usually because the party takes the votes for granted and fail to organize well.
He's also looked at the numbers for the really tough Congressional races this fall, identifying 18 at risk. Of those 18, Bush won in 16 of the districts by an average of 59-41, and in the other two, he lost by an average of 52-48. Unless something radically changes in the next 100 days, he sees the Republicans at least holding their own this November. Fundraising has gone very well. Republicans have raised over $208M. Four years ago, the GOP only had $198M by the end of July.
I asked Rove about election themes for the party; would the GOP focus on the war, on the economy, or on other issues like gay marriage? He seemed a bit dismissive of the idea of themes for midterm elections. The party might highlight their legislative agenda, and the war would certainly impact most races, but individual candidates would really make the decision on which themes work best for themselves. He did think that the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict would serve to remind people that we still are at war with terrorists. Hezbollah is the kind of terrorist organization that we want to eliminate, and their acquisition of longer range rockets and now missiles should remind voters that national security still remains a priority. However, Rove also felt that this particular conflict would not be anyone's campaign theme, but important background that voters would keep in mind themselves.
I also asked him whether he intended on staying in electoral politics after 2006. He gave me a wry grin and made a joke, but declined to answer the question. In my opinion, he loves political organization too much to give it up -- and that's good news for Republicans everywhere.
Note: I did get my brain implant upgraded to v2.0, in case you were wondering.

The Great Blogosphere Brawl |
Wednesday, July 19, 2006
By Wendy McElroy
|
Weblogs or blogs reveal the emotions churning beneath the surface of hard news. For example, journalists may report which legislation passed the House by what margin, but bloggers will lay bare the ideological brawls that underlie the news item.
Over the last two weeks, the blogosphere has buzzed about a bare-knuckled incident that provides a glimpse at how relations between left and right have deteriorated in some circles.Right-wing blogger Jeff Goldstein maintains a well-respected site entitled Protein Wisdom. Left-wing Deborah Frisch maintains the south(west)paw blog. She prides herself on attacking 'right-wing nuts' -- or 'wingnuts' in blogspeak -- by posting insults on their websites. (Left-wingers are referred to as 'moonbats'.)
An exchange on Protein Wisdom between Goldstein and Frisch turned so nasty that it landed in the mainstream media. On July 12, Brit Hume of FOX News reported, "Deborah Frisch escalated a foreign policy argument with blogger Jeff Goldstein last week, writing that if 'someone shot you and your 'tyke' it wouldn't slow me down one iota.' She also wrote that she hopes 'no one Jon-Benets' the child -- a reference to the brutal murder of a young Colorado girl ten years ago -- and made disturbing sexual remarks about the boy."How did a blog exchange escalate into a mainstream news item?
Goldstein and Frisch had been exchanging barbs on his web site for some time, but by July 6, Goldstein had become alarmed by Frisch's continuing and bizarre comments about both his son and wife. At one point, Frisch commented, "I reiterate: If some nutcase kidnapped your child tomorrow and did to her what was done to
Jon-Benet Ramsey, I wouldn't give a damn."
Goldstein established a separate thread on his site in which he collected the comments made under the penname " southwestpaw"; he also revealed the author's real identity.
On July 8, the columnist Michelle Malkin reposted some of Frisch's comments on her own blog. Other conservative sites linked to Malkin and the matter snowballed.
Malkin also nominated Frisch as "Unhinged Academic of the Year." That's because Frisch is an adjunct professor of psychology at the University of Arizona. Or, rather, she was. In backlash against her gleeful and graphic speculation about sexual contact with a 2-year-old, emails poured into the University. On July 8, Frisch 'resigned' her $32,861-a-year part-time position.(Those amazed by a Professor of Psychologist behaving in such a manner might be interested in another item on Frisch's resume. A few years ago, she was also a director of a risk management program at the National Science Foundation and consulted with the FBI on the psychological underpinnings of criminal violence. See pg. 14).
At this point, Frisch could have publicly apologized, accepted her knocks and exited with some grace. Instead, she reacted in a manner that sad experience makes me view as typical of the far-left. (The behavior of right-wing zealots is no less destructive but different in style.)
First, there was the non-apologetic apology that amounted to a denial of wrongdoing. Frisch denied that her Jon Benet comments were threatening; they were merely a 'sick joke'. She also denied making a graphic sexual suggestion regarding the 2-year-old, claiming the post was changed and attributed to her.
Fortunately, Goldstein publicly documented the post as well as information identifying Frisch as its source: her IP address.
Then Frisch played the victim card. "Some blogs have posted comments that I perceive to be physically threatening. I have contacted the FBI
" Criticizing Frisch is a definite crowd-pleaser on conservative blogs where the practice is called 'shooting Frisch in a barrel'. But it is not credible to complain of being treated in the same manner you treat others.
Next, Frisch tried to elevate the incident into political significance, sending readers of her blog to a newspaper article in which her case was discussed as part of the larger issue of the public nature of private Internet activity. "For those interested in
the larger issues raised by the Goldstein incident (e.g., censorship, self-censorship, academic freedom, freedom of speech, blogging & professoring, etc.), here's a link to an article by Josh Brodesky in today's Arizona Daily Star." [punctuation corrected]
Finally, she converted the entire matter into a left-against-right struggle thus removing personal responsibility. "It is unbelievable that a comment saying I would not care if harm came to your child is such a crime to the rightwingnuts when they've been happy as clams to send American dupes to murder, maim, rape and torture
Iraqi children for four years."
To their credit, some left-wing bloggers have denounced Frisch's behavior as inexcusable. To their discredit, some have rallied around her. For example, a blogger at the influential Daily Kos site entitled his entry, "I will repudiate Deborah Frisch when anonymous conservative cowards stop harassing her."
Meanwhile, the drama plays out. Both the Goldstein and Frisch blogs seem to become inaccessible from one moment to the next. Goldstein's inaccessibility is no mystery. Since July 6, the blog has been repeatedly targeted by 'denial of service attacks' -- that is, an attack aimed at preventing access to a site by flooding it with requests. The blog has just moved to another server; presumably, it can block future attacks.
The failure of Frisch's blog was widely ascribed to similar malice until she explained "SWP is back up and running after a 36 hour erasure due to my using a fake phone number (555 1212) when I registered my domain name."
The sad episode has one happy consequence. It has enriched the English language with a new verb. To quote an innovative blogger, "to frisch" means to write "something on the internet so creepy and offensive that you are forced to quit your job before getting canned."
The blogger used it in a sentence: "Deb really frisched herself
"
So what, beyond bad jokes, can be gleaned from the Great Blogosphere Brawl?
I return to the opening sentence of this column, "[B]logs reveal the emotions churning beneath the surface of hard news." It is not possible to understand the headlines without appreciating what drives this issue into prominence and that attitude into disrepect. The motor is often a raw unrepentant rage that takes no ideological prisoners on either side of the left-right divide.
The rabid them-or-us attitude must not be allowed to guide mainstream advocacy. It should be exposed for what it is: ugly and destructive to everyone.

Winds of War: Bush Has Declared World War III Awhile Ago
From
The Gathering Storm
Last week there was much talk about the world entering World War III. It seems even good ol' Newt discovered this fact last week as he did his tour of the news shows. But Bush said we were in World War III a while ago.
US President George W. Bush, quoted in Agence France-Presse, has said the September 11 revolt of passengers against their hijackers on board Flight 93 had struck the first blow of "World War III". IDF Conquers Hizbullah Strongholds, Continues Onward--conquered Hizbullah strongholds, destroyed missiles batteries and located

A snippet?

Why we must monitor mosques
In "Mosque Matters: Maybe wed tackle the tough issues if we got that were at war," Michael Ledeen at National Review argues for what I have been arguing for for years: that we must monitor American mosques.Its interesting that British jihadis came to Queens to recruit Americans and no doubt some of them, fully trained in slaughter, have returned to these shores but the important thing is the mosque. Because theres always a mosque, as my Italian friend Magdi Allam has been repeating for several years. Not all mosques are jihadi, but all jihadis come from a mosque. Sleeper Hizbullah cells overseas have 'reawakened'

Aftermath of 1994 bombing in Buenos Aires.
=========================================
First of all, the number of deaths cited is consistent with statistics for police shootings, despite it's vagueness.
Causes of Law Enforcement Deaths (1996-2005)
This site shows 589 police fatal shootings during that time period, which is close to the 616 cited here for a time period of similar duration.
Now, here are FBI statistics from 1995 to 2004 on type of firearm used:
Enforcement Officers Feloniously Killed Type of Weapon, 1995-2004
Handgun: 396
Rifle: 114
Shotgun: 35
So in other words, if every cop killed by a handgun in the time period in question was killed by this model, it would still fall short of the actual count of cops killed by handguns. Or, more succintly, every cop killed by a handgun would have had to been killed by THIS handgun - and even then, that would not have been enough to meet this claim.
But most people won't take the 20 minutes or so it takes to debunk a lie like this.
--This is why I despise liberals. They have been reduced to making these kind of blatant lies to continue to promote their agenda.

I'm giving Diana West the last warning words tonight:
Osama Siblani, the publisher of Dearborn's Arab American News, considers members of Hezbollah -- along with Hamas and other jihadist groups -- freedom fighters. And, as Mr. Siblani tells it to the Detroit News, he's not alone: "If morally supporting Hizbollah or associating with [Hezbollah spiritual leader Muhammad Hussein] Fadlallah is a crime, 'there is not going to be enough buses to haul the people out and take them to jail.'" Mr. Siblani was speaking before the Israeli offensive began. But not before the 1983 Hezbollah bombings in Beirut, Lebanon, which killed 241 U.S. servicemen, 63 U.S. Embassy personnel and 58 French paratroopers. And not before the 1984 Hezbollah torture-murder of CIA station chief William Buckley in Lebanon. And not before the 1985 Hezbollah hijacking of TWA Flight 847 and the torture-murder of Navy diver Robert Stethem. And not before the 1988 Hezbollah torture-murder of Lt. Col. William Higgins. And not before the Hezbollah bombings of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires in 1992, killing 29; the Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires in 1994, killing 96; or the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia in 1996, killing 19 U.S. servicemen.
American sympathy for Hezbollah profanes the American dead. In our wide-open society, however, such allegiance isn't considered beyond the pale. But it should be. And it could be. I have long argued that the "war on terror" is an amorphous term -- sacrificing clarity for fuzzy political correctness. What if we, as a nation, belatedly declared war on specific jihadist groups -- al Qaeda and Hezbollah and other organizations dedicated to our destruction? This would have the tonic effect of clarifying not only our enemies' identity, but our own.
We can't fight if we don't know who we're fighting. We can't win if we don't know who we are.

A modest proposal
Our friend Brian Kennedy of the Claremont Institute laments the "modest" nature of our missile defense system. Unfortunately, the Clinton administration which by relying on diplomacy rather than action ensured that North Korea would succeed in going nuclear, also opposed the development of a missile defense system with which to cope with North Korean and other missiles. As Kennedy notes, "only after intense pressure in 1998 by congressional Republicans did Clinton begin the modest land-based system designed to deal with a handful of missiles launched at the U.S." President Bush is continuing that effort, but we should be doing more.

Shortly before 1 pm this afternoon, a visitor from Britain using a DSL account at UKOnline discovered Little Green Footballs by following a link from our RSS feed to this post, featuring photos of unabashed Hizballah supporters demonstrating in London: lgf: London Muslims: We Are All Hizballah.
What he saw moved our British visitor to find our contact form and send two messages, both with a Hotmail address thats probably phony.
The first, at 12:55 pm, had the subject line: protest.
get a life you racist scum, you evangelicist scum.
Short, sweet, and to the point. No idea what the point is, but you almost have to admire the heartfelt emotion. Almost.
Our British admirer spent the next three minutes bashing away at his keyboard (somehow, Im sure this ones male) and sent the following message (also with the subject line protest too angry to think of something new, I guess), at 12:58 pm, running the gamut of possible jihadi emotions in an absolutely brilliant stream of consciousness rant, concluding with the mandatory long string of exclamation points trailing off into ones as he prematurely lets go of the shift key:
just by reading some of the post on this blog, shows how arrogant, rasict and bloody pathetic some people are. These scum are thos that have never spoken to a muslim, never interacted with a muslim, yet they chat out of their backside. Just like this racist site which you call a news site. Then you wonder why people say this is not a war on terror but a war of beleifs. Go and wipe the backside of israel, because its this constant wiping trhe backside of israle which is going to be the root cause of all ahte towards the american nation. so go and read a decent newspaper and educate yourselves. go and speak to a muslim, or are you scared he may eat you. There are probably a couple of new rotating titles in there.

Finding Nuance
A status report on the Ongoing Journalistic Jihad Against Prime Minister Stephen Harper;
Actually, we pretty much collapsed like a house of cards. I am also unhappy to report that public reaction to our announced boycott of the Prime Minister's press conferences has not been exceedingly positive. Typical of the many emails our office has received was this one: "Who do you navel-gazing, pasty-faced twits think you are?" And that was from my wife.
Related:
Andrew Coyne.
Nuance was much on the minds of the travelling press accompanying Mr. Harper to the G8 summit in Russia, apparently in the belief that their own appalling mistreatment might be taken as a metaphor for his dealings with the whole world. Harper's seeming lack of nuance, empathy and people skills are making his week-long diplomatic foray
an excruciating exercise, Canadian Press reporter Bruce Cheadle filed from the summit. Throughout the trip, Harper has distanced himself from reporters. Since leaving Ottawa last Wednesday, he has spoken to media travelling with him only three times, including a brief encounter on the plane.
As these tantrums of narcissism continue among members of the Canadian press, I'm reminded of a scene in the animated movie
"Finding Nemo", (albeit with a slight modification in dialogue);
...me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me ...

Jeff Jacoby on the progressive blogospheres favorite dishonest slur: Are you a chicken hawk?
Chicken hawk isnt an argument. It is a slur a dishonest and incoherent slur. It is dishonest because those who invoke it dont really mean what they imply that only those with combat experience have the moral authority or the necessary understanding to advocate military force. After all, US foreign policy would be more hawkish, not less, if decisions about war and peace were left up to members of the armed forces. Soldiers tend to be politically conservative, hard-nosed about national security, and confident that American arms make the world safer and freer. On the question of Iraq stay-the-course or bring-the-troops-home? I would be willing to trust their judgment. Would Cindy Sheehan and Howard Dean?
The cry of chicken hawk is dishonest for another reason: It is never aimed at those who oppose military action. But there is no difference, in terms of the background and judgment required, between deciding to go to war and deciding not to. If only those who served in uniform during wartime have the moral standing and experience to back a war, then only they have the moral standing and experience to oppose a war. Those who mock the views of chicken hawks ought to be just as dismissive of chicken doves.
In any case, the whole premise of the chicken hawk attack that military experience is a prerequisite for making sound pronouncements on foreign policy is illogical and ahistorical. ...
You dont need medical training to express an opinion on healthcare. You dont have to be on the police force to comment on matters of law and order. You dont have to be a parent or a teacher or a graduate to be heard on the educational controversies of the day. You dont have to be a journalist to comment on this or any other column.
And whether you have fought for your country or never had that honor, you have every right to weigh in on questions of war and peace. Those who cackle Chicken hawk! are not making an argument. They are merely trying to stifle one, and deserve to be ignored.

Iran Caught Smuggling Radioactive Material
While Canadian media is busy with news created by polls created to create news;
According to Serguei Tstatchev, head of the Bulgarian Nuclear Control Agency, the truck rented by a British company and Turkish registration was on its way to Istanbul and then Tehran. It contained radioactive material including cesium and its radiocative rate was 200 times the normal rate. Some more info can be found here. While Iran is a little diverting attention with its proxy Hezbollah, it's still focused on implementing quickly its nuclear program. It is high time that the international community acted firmly on Iran because the problem is not going away anytime soon. Hezbollah is the living proof of this...
That and more at Counterterrorism.org.
And then, there's this;
"The bodies of Iranian Revolutionary Guard soldiers who were killed by the Israeli army in Lebanon have been transported to Syria and flown to Tehran, senior Lebanese political sources told WorldNetDaily. The information was confirmed by Israeli and Egyptian security officials. It follows scores of reports the past few days Iranian soldiers have been aiding Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon in their attacks against Israel, including help with the firing of rockets into Israeli population centers."

Islamic cleric sought to "kill 1000" to "please Allah"
Solomonia has MUST SEE video of Hezbollah supporters protesting at the "Defend Hizballah Rally" in Boston here.
This past Friday, the Muslim American Society held their "Justice for Palestine and Lebanon Protest" at Boston's City Hall Plaza referred to at the end of this post. at tip Dennis
The Washington Times has a telling piece about all of "those people clamoring by the thousands for international rescue";
Debbie Schussel has a killer piece on Hezbollah operating here in America here;
In May, I wrote--twice! (here and here)--about Hezbollah financier Talal Chahine and his contributions to Hezbollah front charity Al Mabarrat Association. I also wrote about its Dearborn, Michigan affiliate, Al Mabarat Charitable Organization. I had all the details and have reposted them below. (Yesterday, I went to an Al Mabarrat related event, yesterday, and will post about that, later.)
and make sure you read this;
UPDATE: There is more excellent intel at the Counter Terrorism blog;
Despite Al-Mabarrat-USAs direct link to a Fadlallah-controlled organization, to date, the U.S. branch continues to operate unfettered. In fact, the organization appears to have gained a level of credibility in the U.S. as the Detroit Free Press reported earlier this month that many Muslims in the region have donated to Al-Mabarrat.
Read it all.
There is an amusing kerfuffle on the political sidelines as John Skerry is clucking about Rush Limbaugh. John sKerry "thou protests too much." His fwench nose is out of joint because Rush, truthteller extraordinaire, pointed put the simple fact that the most frequent guest in the Clinton White House, besides Monica Lewinsky and the campaign donors in the Lincoln bedroom, was Yasser Arafat. Rush (and Elie Weisel) have called President Bush the best friend Israel ever had in the White House. D'oh.
I have gone farther, and called into question the ability of the Jews to survive because of their left leaning belief system. The left's latest in-your-face rebuke of the upcoming Bolton confirmation and calls for a ceasefire are a rebuke to Jews everywhere. This is an event horizon for leftwing Jews. I have frequently called Jews to task for tacit support of a party that no longer supports the Jewish state (or America) as Charles has so adroitly pointed out here at Little Green Footballs -- here, and here and here (there are 10 KOS Updates at LGF), yeah it's that bad on the left. So bad in fact, that the Jews on the left are blaming Karl Rove here. Yes I am serious.
sKerry on Rush and Israel
Arafat all but endorsed Kerry in the 2004 presidential election.
Arafat deputy and chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told WND in an exclusive interview that while "we do not involve ourselves in internal American politics," at the same time "our region has been sliding deeper and deeper into chaos because of certain policies over the past few years, and this needs to change." | Permalink | Comments (1)

We need a slogan: Political Correctness is mental AIDS. Wear an intellectual condom. Use the blogosphere.
Truthteller Fjordman writes an extraordinary piece in Brussels Journal. America this is our wake up call;
At the end of the Cold War, Francis Fukuyama pronounced that we had arrived at The End of History, and that capitalism and liberal democracy would now be the only global system left. But when I look at Europe today, I see democracies under threat because of an elaborate Eurabian bureaucracy and Islamic fanaticism. I see countries unwilling or unable to defend themselves against massive
Has democracy become too soft to function? Have we arrived at the End of Democracy rather than the End of History? What are the strengths and weaknesses of democracy? Are there other challenges to it in
the 21st century than there were in the 20th century, and if so, what are they? immigration/colonization.
What are the necessary conditions for a democratic society to work? These are massive questions. I cannot do more than scratch the surface of them here, but Id still like to make an attempt.
In the UK, before Labour came to power, the number of people leaving Britain roughly balanced the number arriving. Then Tony Blairs government embarked on immigration/colonization.
a policy that will totally change the nature of many of the communities in which we live without consulting any of us. [..]
Even in the USA, the most astonishing aspect of the immigration debate is that the élites think they can override the clear and huge resistance of the American people. As columnist Tony Blankley wrote, the Senate was prepared to legislate into the teeth of the will of the American public. Eight out of ten Americans wanted the borders closed to millions of illegal immigrants, yet
immigration/colonization.
nothing substantial has been done. There has to be a reason for this.
There is also in the USA a dangerous drive for granting full rights, even voting rights, to illegal immigrants. In the Nordic countries Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland and Denmark [and also in Belgium] foreign citizens, though not illegals, are allowed to vote in local elections. As Roger Scruton points out, Western civilization depends on an idea of citizenship that is not global at all, but rooted in territorial jurisdiction and national loyalty. A nation that refuses to differentiate between citizens and non-citizens cannot survive.
It is more than a little ironic that people calling for restrictions of immigration are denounced as anti-democratic forces when it is the other way around. The most fundamental democratic right of all must be to decide who should be allowed to move into your home. Freedom of speech and immigration control should not be outsourced to faceless bureaucrats in Brussels or the UN. The people should decide who should be allowed to settle in their country.
UN bureaucrats from Islamic countries are influencing how we should manage our immigration policies, even our freedom of speech. This comes on top of the maze of non-governmental organizations and self-appointed human rights groups at home and abroad, always interfering in anything we do to maintain our own borders. Put together, this means that Westerners are no longer allowed to decide who should settle in their countries.
Muslim immigrants want to first infiltrate established political parties, to ensure VIP treatment of Muslims and to keep the floodgates open to new Muslims arriving, and later to establish parties of their own. So far, this strategy has shown some success. They have also been rather successful at spreading terror in the West and instilling fear into the hearts of the enemies of Allah, just as the Koran commands. As Ibn Warraq, Ali Sina and other former Muslims have warned against, there is more evidence of an Islamization of democracy in the West than of any spread of democracy in the Islamic world.
I have warned against the development of a pragmatic alliance between Western Leftists and Muslims. Third World immigrants in general, and Muslims in particular, vote overwhelmingly for Leftist parties. This means that by simply opening the gates for massive immigration, Socialists can be certain of a net gain in future elections. This is a critical flaw in our societies, one that could destroy the entire democratic system unless fixed.
[...]
How could a few, selected people decide in back rooms to launch a huge project of the transformation of an entire continent, without being stopped or even have this Project acknowledged in public? Is democracy just a sham, an act where the general public is allowed to make minor decisions while powerful people move behind the scenes to make the most important decisions? Or is it the very set-up of such massive, transnational organizations such as the EU that moves power away from the people and into back rooms and the corridors of power? Is the creation of Eurabia an indication of democracys flaws, or an argument in favor of revitalizing it?
What happened to the ideal of investigative journalism, being of the side of the people and exposing abuse of power? There are people in the media who are criticizing the EU. Ironically, many of them are Socialists who think there is too much capitalism in the inner market. Leftists will, however, never criticize the worst aspects of it, the promotion of Multiculturalism, Muslim immigration and demonization of Israel and the United States, since these things fit their own, ideological agenda. European media are brimming with anti-Israeli and anti-American articles, yet hardly any of the mainstream journalists are writing about Eurabia or even mentioning the term. What happened to the free press? Was it merely an illusion, or did it get lost somewhere?
There is so much more. You must read it all.
We need a slogan: Political Correctness is mental AIDS. Wear an intellectual condom. Use the blogosphere.
You rarely (if ever) read about Islamic Iran's peculiar appetite for public hangings which I try to
chronicle from time to time here, here, here and here for example. Their record as the greatest violators of human rights (the beat China?), is hardly spoken of. When Iran installs the torturer and murderer of Canadian journalist Zahra Kazemi on the UN Human Rights council, little is made of it in the Jihad media. Nor do you hear the unimaginable acts of barbarity perpetrated on the Christians in Lebanon, painfully described here by Brigitte Gabriel. The Jihad media is the horrible accomplice is all this evil by their silence and their cover.
Woe to those that call evil good and good evil.
The BBC notoriously anti Jew, anti America - their news service becoming increasingly irrelevant. But not all of it. It seems if you want the the real news, you'll have to check the TV listings. Check this out from the BBC TV section (hat tip Pim's Ghost);
Execution of a Teenage Girl
27 Jul, 9:00 pm - 9:50 pm 50mins
On August 15th, 2004 a 16-year-old girl was hanged in a public square in Neka, Iran, a small industrial town by the Caspian Sea. Her death sentence was for crimes against chastity. Her name was Atefah Sahaaleh. The only evidence against Atefah was her own forced confession.
Atefah railed against her judge in court for its unfairness, but this was her undoing. Judge Haji Rezai, who was also the local mullah, prosecutor and head of the city administration, personally obtained permission from Iran's Supreme Court to execute her, and put the noose around her neck himself before she was hoisted on a crane jib arm to her death.
Using undercover footage, eyewitness accounts and drama recontruction, this film tells an unforgettable story of the life and tragic death of an ordinary teenage girl under Iran's mullahs. This programme contains some scenes which some viewers may find upsetting. [S]
Don't know Atefeh's story? Read Siamack Baniameri's account here. Pim's Ghost wrote me;
Hanged by an insane judge? Literally, as in he was the one who put the noose on her neck and gave the signal for the crane to hoist her up? Left her hanging for 45 minutes "as an example"? Man , if you haven't put anything up about her yet do it. She ripped off her headscarf in court (it was her "sharp tongue" and "acts inconsistent with chastity" that got her death sentence, many say it was her rebuff of the judge's advances on her that landed her in court) and gave a fiery speech about how it was the men who forced women into these positions that should be punished, not the women who have no choice. If ever a real FEMINIST HERO, she's the one, and at only 16. But you won't hear about her from the left of course. Her lover got 100 lashes, and according to some reports he was an army guy forced on her by her brothers. Her mother died when she was young, Dad was a drug addict.

Alt.Muslim "reviews" Islam: What the West Needs to Know
When I wrote my book Islam Unveiled in 2001, I hoped that thoughtful Muslims would address the points I raised in it, and that we could open up a dialogue that might be useful in illuminating what could be done about the elements of Islam that give rise to fanaticism and violence. In that I was naive. The response by critics to that book as well as to every other book that I have written has consisted only of vague assertions that I am ignorant of Islam, without ever providing a single substantive refutation of anything I wrote.
It's the same with this Alt.Muslim review of the documentary in which I appear, Islam: What The West Needs To Know. Reviewer Zahir Janmohamed seems to think that sneering is a good substitute for argumentation. He raises not a single substantive point to attempt to show that what the movie says is wrong. The African Connection:Rep. Jefferson and Joe Wilson--Joe Wilsons new incarnation as a wheeler-dealer in corruption-rife countries in Africa was a perfect fit for his role as impresario of the massive Clinton delegation to Africa, which brought together corruption-stained individuals on the lookout for future business opportunities.--"Many other figures, some of them quite prominent, are likely to turn up as players in the temporarily suspended probe. Independent citizen-investigators, posting at such websites as Just One Minute, Macsmind, and Free Republic, have been poring over publicly-available documents and reports, in search of clues as to the identities of those as yet unnamed in the Jefferson investigation." BOO FREAKIN HOO AWARD OF THE DAY
See if you can get through this Washington Post sob story about 100 illegal alien criminals being deported without getting your eyeballs stuck in your head from rolling them upwards repeatedly. Don't miss the multimedia slideshow full of poor, shackled deportees...with MS-13 gang tattoos!:

Hard for me to decide which takes the cake--the reporter's failure to corroborate the criminal deportees' anecdotes, the downplaying of the violent nature of the crimes committed by nearly half of those on the plane, the alarmism over mass deportations that will never happen under the Bush administration, or the foolish belief that the criminal deportees are on a journey of "no return."
Open-borders journalism at its worst. All that's missing is a hyperbolic slavery analogy.
Well, there's always a next time.

MINUTEMEN MONEY TROUBLES
Things don't look good down at the southern border where the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps has supposedly been using gobs of citizen donations to build a fence to keep out illegal aliens. The Washington Times, which has supported the project (as have I), editorializes today: Allegations of financial funny business first surfaced in an investigation by Phoenix TV station ABC 15. John Hawkins has a good backgrounder. The Texas Minutemen are not happy and break down the numbers.
It is hard enough for pro-enforcement folks to get a fair shake in the public arena. Simcox better follow the Times' friendly advice to get his house in order and to do it with maximum transparency. The open-borders lobby is gloating, no doubt. But that will be nothing compared to the wrath of civic-minded donors if they find out that Simcox has been ripping them off in the name of national security. TrackBack <3>

Biggest Pork Item In History?
Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA) got Congress to pass his amendment to the Deep Water Energy Resources Act that had nothing to do with deep water or energy resources. Instead, HR 3496 earmarked $1.5 billion for the Washington DC Metro system, which operates above water in all senses except financially. The Heritage Foundation's Ronald Utt describes the amendment as "the biggest pork earmark in history", and it's headed for the Senate.
I discuss this in my latest post at the Heritage Foundation. Most amazing, the earmark comes because the constituent cities and states involved have little interest in funding improvements to their own system -- so Davis decided to charge every man, woman, and child in America $5 to have someone else ride the bus or train in our nation's capital.
Why, exactly, is this a federal problem? Davis has an explanation that will make you roll your eyes, and the Washington Post editorial supporting it should make you laugh out loud. Be sure to read it, and perhaps point out the folly of this earmark to your Senators.

After my musings on the disturbing story about how a website critical of the performance of the Ontario Provincial Police during the land dispute in Caledonia was blocked, an even more disturbing comment was posted:
Steve
I am an OPP officer who regularily surfs your site (from home). I know for a fact that the OPP has blocked the Caledonia web site from being viewed from any computer on the Ontario Government network.
The original story alleged that the site was made inaccessible to police computers only. But this comment indicates that all provincial government computers are subject to the restriction.
I'm hoping for more confirmation from other people who work for the Ontario government, in particular those who do not work for the Ontario Provincial Police.
The comment says it clearly. No one who works for the Ontario government -- from the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Education to the Ontario Provincial Police -- can access Caledonia Wake Up Call.
Consider this carefully. A website keeps a careful record of the actions (or lack of action) of the OPP, and the OPP somehow removes the ability to access this site from all government employees. Just when did Premier Dalton McGuinty decide to hand the power to make decisions concerning the flow of information over to the OPP?
As far as I know, the Ministry of Health has not blocked access to the Freedom Party webpage that advocates private health insurance. Maybe it's just a matter of time.
Back to the OPP-related website though. Let's consider one very specific, immediate, and practical implication of this. Put aside the unsettling philosophical question of how a police force stung by criticism can dictate internet policy to the government as a whole. Recall that the questions being posed about the OPP are quite valid, and are the subject of court proceedings:
An Ontario judge is again demanding to know why his orders to police to end the aboriginal land dispute in Caledonia haven't been carried out.
Justice David Marshall today called into court representatives from provincial police, the Ministry of the Attorney General, and the aboriginal occupiers.
Marshall is hearing legal arguments about why the protesters remain at the housing development.
"This is a matter at the very heart of the administration of justice," Marshall said in court.
"If court orders can be disregarded the whole fabric of democracy falls to pieces."
Here's the practical question I want you to consider. Justice Marshall and his clerks will be considering the actions of the OPP (actions that have already deeply frustrated the court) and part of their research might include scouring the web for reports of the events in Caledonia, web surfing that will be done from Ontario government computers installed in these provincial court offices.
What if the court decides to follow a link to Caledonia Wake Up Call, then finds out the site can't be reached from the provincial government computer by order of the OPP?
I wonder how Justice Marshall will react.
I bet he won't be too happy. And maybe just a bit more worried about the fabric of democracy.
Update: Maybe it is just the OPP computers after all:
Hi Steve, I work for the Government of Ontario, in a Ministry head office. I'm not sure where "mapleleaf4ever" got his information from, but I can access the Caledonia Wake-Up Call website just fine. As a matter of fact, I'm looking at it right now from my work computer (latest updates are "Jul 24 - Internet Polls" and "Jul 25 - Four Males Arrested in Caledonia Disturbance"), which is directly hooked up to the government network, behind the Ministry's firewall and everything.
Interesting. So there is some confusion about just what is being blocked and where. I'd like to hear from more people about whether the site is indeed blocked, and whether the ability to reach the site has changed over the last few days.
